Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland's coast is a breakthrough for tidal energy

Submerged in about 40 meters (44 yards) of water off Scotland's coast, a turbine has been spinning for more than six years to harness the power of ocean tides for electricity — a durability mark that demonstrates the technology's commercial viability.
Keeping a large, or grid-scale, turbine in place in the harsh sea environment that long is a record that helps pave the way for bigger tidal energy farms and makes it far more appealing to investors, according to the trade association Ocean Energy Europe. Tidal energy projects would be prohibitively expensive if the turbines had to be taken out of the water for maintenance every couple of years.
Tidal energy technologies are still in the early days of their commercial development, but their potential for generating clean energy is big. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, marine energy, a term researchers use to refer to power generated from tides, currents, waves or temperature changes, is the world's largest untapped renewable energy resource.
The MeyGen tidal energy project off the coast of Scotland has four turbines producing 1.5 megawatts each, enough electricity collectively to power up to 7,000 homes annually. On Thursday, the Swedish company SKF announced that its bearings and seals on one of the turbines had passed the 6 1/2-year mark without needing unplanned or disruptive maintenance. It has been working closely with the industry for a decade on design and testing.
Achieving six years in the water with constant operations is a 'very significant milestone' that bodes well for the future of tidal energy, said Rémi Gruet, CEO of Ocean Energy Europe.
Scotland and the United Kingdom are global leaders in tidal energy. The MeyGen site, operated by SAE Renewables, has been sending electricity to the grid for about eight years.
There are very few tidal energy projects generating electricity continuously. Most have been tests and demonstrations, said Andrea Copping, an expert in marine renewable energy development. Copping said there are still large hurdles to overcome before tidal energy can be adopted more widely, such as dealing with regulatory issues, potential environmental effects and conflicts with other ocean users.
Still, the Scotland project seems to have addressed the question of whether the turbines can last in seawater, added Copping, a distinguished faculty fellow in the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at the University of Washington.
'I think they have checked the boxes,' she said. 'Because skeptics, and that includes investors of course and governments, said, 'How on Earth are you going to operate these things especially for any length of time in this very tough environment?' And that's what I think they proved.'
It's very hard to take what is essentially a wind turbine normally found on land and put it under water, said Fraser Johnson, operations and maintenance manager at MeyGen. The record-setting turbine should keep going for at least another year before it needs to come out of the water for maintenance, he added.
The four turbines are in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth, a narrow channel between the Scottish mainland and Stroma Island known for strong tidal currents. Tidal energy systems need strong currents to make electricity efficiently. MeyGen plans to add 20 turbines in 2030 to produce more electricity, after needed upgrades to the electricity grid are finished. The site could eventually hold as many as 130 turbines that are more powerful than those at the site today.
The MeyGen site is in the open water, while another type of tidal project involves creating a dam-like structure called a barrage across tidal waters. With four turbines, MeyGen is considered the largest tidal energy project of its kind worldwide, said Johnson.
'It's a title we wish we didn't have. We want more, we want others,' he said. 'Unfortunately others are having difficulty achieving what MeyGen has achieved. But working with SKF moving forward, we'll push the industry forward.'

Researchers make groundbreaking discovery with potential to change future of wind energy: 'Could play an invaluable role'

Engineers from the University of Glasgow have revealed a new design for bladeless wind turbines that has the potential to optimize efficiency. Published in the Renewable Energy journal, the study used advanced computer simulations to compare thousands of bladeless models to determine which design led to the best performance. Thanks to the computer analysis, the team of engineers was able to successfully understand how mast dimensions, power output, and structural safety in different wind speeds influence a turbine's power output. "Their key finding is that there is an optimal design for BWTs which creates a 'sweet spot' where power generation is maximized against structural strength," according to a summary posted on Tech Xplore. Based on the researchers' conclusions, the optimized design features an 80-centimeter mast, which has the ability to "safely deliver a maximum of 460 watts of power, the team found, significantly outpacing the best performance of even the best-performing real-world prototypes built to date, which have delivered a maximum of 100 watts," per the summary. As the name implies, bladeless wind turbines (BWTs) are made without blades, and therefore generate power differently than conventional wind turbines that use the blades to produce electricity. Instead, BWTs generate electricity through a process known as vortex-induced vibration. Since BWTs are in the shape of a thin cylinder, they sway in the wind, creating a motion that's then converted into electricity. Advancements in BWT design make transitioning toward clean energy solutions more accessible. The more companies that opt for wind energy, the more we can reduce the total amount of pollution in the atmosphere. "In the future, BWTs could play an invaluable role in generating wind power in urban environments, where conventional wind turbines are less useful," Dr. Wrik Mallik, one of the paper's corresponding authors, said in the summary. "BWTs are quieter than wind turbines, take up less space, pose less of a threat to wildlife, and have fewer moving parts, so they should require less regular maintenance." 10 Reasons to Buy and Hold This High-Yield Utility Stock Forever

NextEra Energy is a regulated utility. The company is also a clean energy giant. NextEra Energy's unique portfolio of businesses sets it up for strong long-term dividend growth. 10 stocks we like better than NextEra Energy › NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) hails from the utility sector, but it's anything but a boring dividend stock. And yet, if you like dividends, you'll likely find NextEra Energy an attractive investment. And if you like utilities, it can help supercharge what might otherwise be a relatively sleepy list of holdings. Here are 10 reasons you might want to buy and hold this unique utility stock forever. The core of NextEra Energy is its regulated utility operation. That is largely made up of Florida Power & Light, the largest utility in the Sunshine State. Florida has long benefited from in migration, which naturally tilts the foundation of NextEra Energy's business toward slow and steady growth. On top of the core utility operation, NextEra Energy has built one of the world's largest providers of solar and wind power. So this "boring" utility is positioned well to grow along with the world's increasing demand for cleaner power alternatives. One big benefit of mixing a strong and reliable core operation with a growth-oriented business has been dividend growth. Over the past decade, NextEra Energy increased its payouts at a rapid 10% pace, on an annualized basis. Half of that would be good for a utility. And 10% payout growth would be good for just about any company. This is a stock that dividend growth investors could easily fall in love with. But don't think that 10 years of dividend growth is all you get here. NextEra Energy's dividend-hiking streak goes back 31 years. In other words, this utility has been growing its dividend reliably for over three decades, which should make more conservative income investors pretty happy, too. The only problem an income investor might have is that NextEra Energy's yield isn't the highest in the utility sector. But at 3.2%, it is above the sector's 2.8% average. So while you can certainly find higher yields, you aren't getting shortchanged on yield if you buy NextEra Energy. Political winds shift over time, and right now, federal government support for clean energy investment is waning in the United States. But the transition from carbon fuels to renewable options like solar and wind is not a short-term trend. Notably, NextEra currently has a 28-gigawatt pipeline of projects to work on, as well as another 300 gigawatts of potential opportunities after those projects are done. Energy transitions take decades, and there is likely to be a material runway for growth ahead for NextEra Energy. That annualized dividend growth rate of 10% over the past decade is the past. What about the future? Management is forecasting 10% dividend growth in 2025 and 2026, backed by expected adjusted earnings growth of 6% to 8%. The earnings growth being projected, however, goes out to 2027. And both of those company projections are based on the strong growth being delivered in clean energy. In other words, it seems likely that NextEra Energy's dividend-hiking streak will continue for at least the next several years, if not longer. NextEra Energy's regulated utility operations provide a strong foundation for the business. But that's not the only way in which the company's foundation can be viewed. The entire business is backed by an investment-grade rated balance sheet. So this is a strong business that is also financially strong. In addition to having a rock-solid balance sheet, NextEra Energy also has a very reasonable dividend payout ratio of 66%. That may sound high to some investors. However, utilities tend to have higher payout ratios in general, and NextEra's ratio leaves it with plenty of room for adversity and for continued growth. A key factor to keep in mind is that its cash flows tend to be highly reliable, given that a significant portion of its business is effectively a monopoly in the regions where it operates. The final reason to appreciate this stock relates to the big-picture view of the world that NextEra Energy operates within. Between 2000 and 2020, U.S. power demand grew by a total of 9%. Between 2020 and 2040, demand is projected to increase by 55%. That step change in demand growth will support not just the company's clean energy ambitions but also its regulated operations. So NextEra Energy is a fast-growing business in a sector that appears to be headed for a sustained growth spurt. The political shift in Washington has investors worried about clean energy stocks. NextEra Energy's share price has been hit by that negativity, which has pushed its yield up to attractive levels. Historically, the stock has been afforded a premium valuation by investors, which has kept its yield below the industry average. So if you're thinking long term, now would be a good time to consider adding NextEra Energy to your dividend portfolio.
