NBA free agent Malik Beasley under investigation regarding gambling allegations, AP source says
NBA free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation by the U.S. District Attorney's office regarding gambling allegations tied to league games, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the matter. 'We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors' investigation,' NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement released to the AP and other outlets on Sunday. ESPN was the first to report on the investigation. 'An investigation is not a charge,' Steve Haney, Beasley's attorney, said in the ESPN report. 'Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. Constitution. As of now he has not been charged with anything.' The probe into Beasley comes 14 months after the NBA banned Toronto's Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud. This past season, The Wall Street Journal was first to report that Terry Rozier — then of the Charlotte Hornets — was under investigation for activity related to unusual betting patterns surrounding him in a March 2023 game. Rozier, now of the Miami Heat, has not been charged with any crime, nor has he faced any sanction from the NBA. Porter's ban came after a similar investigation into his performance and 'prop bets' — wagers where bettors can choose whether a player will reach a certain statistical standard or not during a game. The Porter investigation started once the league learned from 'licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets' about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter's performance in a game on March 20, 2024, against Sacramento. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior that game and said that another individual — known to be an NBA bettor — placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million. Beasley signed last year with the Pistons, taking a one-year contract for $6 million in the hopes of cashing in this summer as a free agent. A second person, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity because no deal was announced, said Detroit was 'very interested' in re-signing Beasley to a multi-year contract this summer. Those talks might be in jeopardy, given the uncertainty regarding the federal probe. He made a single-season, franchise-record 319 3-pointers in the regular season. He helped Detroit make the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and end an NBA-record 15-game postseason losing streak in the first round against the New York Knicks. Beasley averaged 16.3 points last season and has averaged 11.7 points over his career with Denver, Minnesota, Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Detroit. He scored a career-high 19.6 points a game during the 2020-21 season with the Timberwolves. The Atlanta native played at Florida State and the Nuggets drafted him No. 19 overall in 2016. ___ AP Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds contributed to this report. ___

Tree that killed girl, 7, was ‘propped up by metal poles'
A tree that collapsed and killed a seven-year-old girl in Southend-on-Sea on Saturday had been 'propped up by metal supports for years'. She and four other children were taken to hospital after a branch fell in Chalkwell Park while they were playing underneath it. One six-year-old girl remains in critical condition. Dozens of members of the public rushed to help those trapped underneath the fallen tree before police officers, paramedics and firefighters attended. Cllr James Courtenay, who leads the council's Conservative group and represents the ward in which the tragedy took place, called for an investigation into what happened. He said: 'We shouldn't rush to judgment, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't conduct a full and thorough investigation.' He added: 'I believe the council should review internally what knowledge it has and what actions should be taken in the park and other parks. We need one investigation that gets to the bottom of it and understands what happened.' Mr Courtenay, 42, said he believed the tree had been supported by poles for years, if not decades. 'I went down this morning and laid flowers on behalf of the Chalkwell councillors and the Conservative group on the council. You could see a steady flow of people coming to visit,' he added. 'I think my reaction was one of disbelief. That tree had been there for so long, it was an old tree when I was a lad. 'In this day and age, parents are always worried about their children in parks, but the one thing you wouldn't worry about is a tree collapsing. I can barely begin to imagine what the family must feel. Their world has been turned upside down in seconds.' Writing on Facebook, Jack Whitaker, a resident, said: 'I live five minutes down the road. [The] tree had been braced for years. A very light reduction had been carried out a few years ago. '[The] limb that had been braced was substantial and held a huge amount of lateral weight. Said limb was in a high-risk area with lots of foot traffic directly under its path.' Nicholas Salman wrote on social media: 'Can't just stick a few metal poles under a 20-tonne tree and leave it and expect it to be ok. Then build a bench under to help kids climb up. 'My kids tried to do the same, but obviously I stopped them as one is six years old! Absolutely heartbreaking, my thoughts are with the family.' 'A danger for years' Victoria Muscat also commented on the tragedy online, saying it was 'totally avoidable'. She said: 'They've known it's a danger for years. Thoughts are with the family.' Chris Roftis agreed: 'The council should have a tree person who checks every day if trees are rotting, unsafe etc. So council has got a lot of answering to do as well.' Southend-on-Sea city council has been contacted for comment. A spokesman for Essex Police said: 'Shortly before 3pm on Saturday, June 28, it was reported a tree had partially collapsed in Chalkwell Park. 'A number of children were caught beneath the tree and suffered injuries. The park was busy with members of the public and many immediately went to their aid.' Ch Supt Leighton Hammett of Essex Police added: 'Families are facing unimaginable hardship this evening and all of our thoughts are with them at this time. 'I cannot begin to put into words how difficult today's events have been, and continue to be, for them. 'It's also not lost on me how traumatic it must have been for the members of the public who witnessed this awful incident.'

Miracle newborn is found clinging to life after mom died inside Arizona home a week earlier
A newborn baby has been saved from the brink of starvation after their mother died at an Arizona home and nobody was around to take care of them. Phoenix Police have released harrowing bodycam footage of the moment officers rescued the tiny infant as their mother lay dead beside them. Cops were called to the apartment close to Central Avenue and Illini Street in Eleven Palms, south Phoenix, at around 11am on May 14 after concerned neighbors dialed 911 saying they hadn't seen the woman who lived there for several days. 'Inside the home, they discovered the mother had passed away and her baby was still alive, severely dehydrated and clinging to life,' police said in a release on Thursday. 'Officers quickly got the infant help, and the baby was taken to a nearby hospital to recover. 'The baby was taken to the hospital in critical condition. We are happy to report, the infant's condition has improved greatly, and they're expected to survive.' Phoenix Police did not name the mother or give the gender of the child. Her cause of death has not been disclosed. The Daily Mail has requested more information. Police bodycam shows cops shouting 'hello?' outside the apartment, receiving no response and breaking down the door. The scene then cuts to a cop uncovering a tiny infant wrapped in blankets on a bed, where police said the mother's body was also found. He gently places the baby in a stroller before passing the child to EMT colleagues, who rescued them from the brink of death. Detectives described the baby 'visibly emaciated'. Phoenix Police spokesperson Sgt. Brian Bower also gave more context during an interview with Arizona Family. Describing the scene, he said: 'Officers looked through an open window and saw an adult woman who was motionless. 'The mother had passed away while the child was still on the bed still curled up where the mother had left them. 'It wasn't learned until well after the fact from doctors and staff at the hospital that if the police officers didn't immediately provide aide and didn't immediately go into the apartment, the child may not have survived much longer,' he added. Sergeant Bower praised the actions of the police officers and neighbors who alerted them to the tragedy. 'It's because of the smart, immediate actions of the officers as well as the neighbors seeing something unusual and calling in for help,' he said. Sergeant Bower said the Department of Child Safety is involved in caring for the baby. Police are still investigating the mother's cause of death.
