Mortal Kombat 1 DLC is officially over as developer teases next project
NetherRealm has confirmed there will be no more DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 1 following disappointing sales.
Mortal Kombat is still the best-selling fighting game franchise in the world, but the latest entry fell short of its usual sales expectations.
The latest game, titled Mortal Kombat 1, was a reboot of the series set in a new timeline, where classic characters like Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Johnny Cage possessed reworked origin stories and aesthetics.
While the game itself was mechanically solid, it clearly didn't connect with fans in the same way as its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11. The latter managed to sell over 15 million copies during its lifetime, whereas Mortal Kombat 1, as of January this year, has sold 5 million.
After rumours emerged last year of an early cut to DLC support, developer NetherRealm has confirmed there will be no more extra characters or expansions for Mortal Kombat 1.
'We are hearing players' requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on,' a post on X reads.
'We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.'

The last DLC character for Mortal Kombat 1 was the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day, which rolled out in March following last year's Khaos Reigns expansion. Earlier this month, a definitive edition combining all the DLC was released.
NetherRealm hasn't announced what its next project actually is, but a dataminer recently suggested the studio is working on the next entry in the Injustice franchise.

In a post on X earlier this month, dataminer MultiverSusie, who is known for MultiVersus leaks, wrote: 'MultiVersus shutting down is an injustice, then doing it all again is another injustice. Leaving me without any leaks is yet again another Injustice. 3.' More Trending
If true, this would be the first entry in the series since 2017's Injustice 2. The series takes place in an alternate reality within the DC Universe, where Superman has become an evil tyrant, and features a roster of fighters ranging from Wonder Woman to Black Adam.
Prior to Injustice, NetherRealm developed a DC crossover fighter titled Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, which was released in 2008 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Rumours of a new Injustice game have floated around for years, but the timing might be right for a new instalment to coincide with DC's revamped cinematic universe, which starts with Superman this summer.

An expectant mother who named her first child after a videogame character has admitted she 'hates' the moniker and now 'cringes' whenever she hears it. A woman, believed to be from the US, took to social media to express her regret after 'going along' with her husband's choice to name their first born son after a fictional character. Now expecting her second child, the mother confessed she 'desperately wishes' she had turned down his suggestion four years ago, adding that she had only agreed at the time because she didn't have a moniker of her own in mind. Taking to Reddit, she wrote: 'Currently pregnant with a baby girl due in the summer and so me and my husband are the in the middle of choosing a name for her.' It was only when the two began searching for a girl's name that it 'really hit' how much she despised the title. She explained: 'While in the search for a girl name it has really hit me how much I hate my four-year-old son's name. 'His name was chosen by my husband and because I didn't have a name I really liked we went with his favourite choice.' Inspired by one character in the online fantasy game, Huge Mortal Kombat, her husband suggested they name their son Raiden. Continuing, she wrote: 'My son's name is Raiden. Yes, I know! 'And on top of that we aren't huge mortal kombat fans either! My husband just feels it sounds 'badass' and I desperately wish I would've said no four years ago but here we are. 'I cringe whenever I hear any 'ayden/aiden's' out in the world knowing we contributed to that stupid trend.' In an attempt to bypass the 'cringe' sound in the latter part of the moniker, the mother admitting to calling their son 'Ray. 'When we meet people I tell them his name is Raiden but we call him Ray,' she said. So upset by the name, she asked Redditors whether it would be 'ridiculous' to legally change the four-year-old's moniker. 'Would it be ridiculous to change his legal name to Ray at this point? 'Is the name Raiden as awful as I think it is? Help,' she asked desperately. The poster added that her husband was convinced she was being 'dramatic' in calling it 'awful', and that he was still fond Raiden. 'He feels we should let our son decide if he likes it or not but he's willing to change it to Ray since I've been expressing how much I dislike it,' she said. She questioned whether her sudden dislike for the moniker was related to being pregnant. 'I can see me being dramatic about it right now,' she said. Many of those responding did not take kindly to the unique name, with one even describing it as a 'cautionary tale' to never use the reasoning of 'it sounds badass' to name a baby. One replied: 'The honest answer is yeah, Raiden is as awful as you think it is. It has violent connotations, and also sounds like radioactive gas. 'Sorry. Keep calling him Ray, that's gorgeous! I'd just introduce him as that from now on and leave the rest out.' 'Your husband is not allowed to name your daughter,' a second joked. 'It's absolutely ok to keep using Ray and not tell anyone your son's full name unless they need to know (teachers, pediatrician, etc),' a third responded, adding that they thought it was 'fine to legally change his name to Ray'. A teacher, familiar with a broad spectrum of names, said the moniker wasn't 'great' but reassured the poster that it wasn't 'the worst name I've seen'. Another had a more optimistic take on the name. 'I am biased because I'm obviously a Mortal Kombat fan but I think it's cool lol. Just leave him. Raiden is also the Japanese thunder god.' An agreeing second wrote: 'I like it too! At its peak, the free-to-play action role-playing game enjoyed 15million active players. But six years after launching, developers said there had been a "decline of active players". They blamed the drop off on "negative public reception of TK" (team kill). But players have pointed the finger at changes in ownership of the company behind Dauntless which they say "ruined the game". "The game is nothing like I remember it when it first launched," one previous fan wrote on Reddit. As such, servers will close on all platforms - PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch and PC - on May 29. But it's not the only gaming casualty in May. On May 30, the MultiVersus title will also go offline. The free-to-play crossover fighting game features characters from popular Warner Bros franchises, including Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo and Cartoon Network. At its height, the title had 20million players but only a year later numbers waned leading to MultiVersus's online functionality being discontinued. While the servers are closing, players who already have the game installed will still be able to use it offline instead. "After careful consideration, our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game," developers said. "All online features will continue to be available until Season 5 concludes on May 30 at 9 a.m. PDT. "At that point, there will be an option to play MultiVersus offline via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends."
