STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Switzerland secured a 7-0 victory to bring Denmark's fairytale run to an end on Saturday and reach the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship final against the United States.
Just 48 hours after the Danes made ice hockey history by defeating powerhouse Canada, the Swiss ruthlessly ended their dreams with a precision performance.
Nino Niederreiter, Switzerland's highest-profile hockey export thanks to his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets, scored twice in a devastating first-period onslaught that saw the Swiss establish a 3–0 lead, with Ken Jager also scoring.
Switzerland's offensive barrage continued when Denis Malgin scored a fourth with a moment of individual brilliance, netting his first goal of the tournament after 2:22 in the second period.
Sandro Schmid — recovering from taking a puck to the face in the first period — got the fifth, while Damien Riat and Tyler Moy also found the net as Denmark's hopes evaporated.
Switzerland will face Team USA in Sunday's final after the Americans hammered Sweden 6-2 earlier on Saturday. Denmark will play fellow co-hosts Sweden for the bronze medal.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin cling on to top spot, Aaron-Wooi Yik closing in

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have retained their status as the world no. 1 pair - but the fight to stay at the top is far from over as they head into the Indonesia Open this week, with threats coming from both abroad and at home. Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who last month became the first Malaysian shuttlers to reach the top of the world rankings since Lee Chong Wei in June 2017, nearly lost their grip following a quarter-final exit at the Singapore Open. They were fortunate that world No. 2 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen failed to capitalise. The Danes, who had only just surrendered the top spot to the Malaysians a week earlier, needed to reach the final in Singapore to reclaim it - but fell short. Now, Sze Fei-Izzuddin must fend off a new threat - in-form compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik. Fresh off their title win in Singapore, the world No. 3 pair have surged into genuine contention, narrowing the gap to just 1,220 points heading into the Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta. Meanwhile, Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who finished runners-up to Aaron-Wooi Yik in Singapore, continue to hold firm at world No. 7. In the men's singles, Lee Zii Jia has slipped two more spots to No. 15 as he works his way back from injury. However, he remains eligible for all World Tour events thanks to his protected ranking of No. 9. Leong Jun Hao stays as Malaysia's second-highest ranked men's singles player at No. 25, followed by rising star Justin Hoh, who climbs two places to No. 43. In doubles, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei continue to lead the way in the women's and mixed disciplines respectively, both maintaining their world No. 4 standings. Also flying the flag in mixed doubles are Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who remain steady at No. 5. Goh Jin Wei remains Malaysia's top-ranked women's singles player, though still well behind the leading pack at No. 49. Men's doubles continues to be the nation's strongest department, with six pairs currently inside the world's top 32 — the cut-off that ensures automatic entry into World Tour events. The other three pairs are Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King (No. 23), Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong (No. 28), and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi (No. 32). In the women's doubles, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing are the only other Malaysian pair within the top 32 at No. 23, while Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin sit No. 13 in mixed doubles.

Soccer-Former Spurs players back Postecoglou amid uncertain future

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur v Brighton & Hove Albion - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, Britain - May 25, 2025, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou holds aloft the Europa League trophy during a lap of appreciation after the match Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs/File Photo (Reuters) -As Tottenham Hotspur ponder the fate of manager Ange Postecoglou, former players of the Premier League side have thrown their support behind the Australian and urged the club's ownership to stay the course. Postecoglou guided Tottenham to Europa League victory last month, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought, but they also endured their worst domestic season for nearly half a century and finished 17th in the Premier League. The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week. Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make. "I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou," Vega said on social media on Monday. "He has accomplished the impossible - something others with more significant credentials have failed to achieve." Ex-Spurs and Ireland striker Robbie Keane said that in the eyes of the fans the Europa League win had made up for the woeful domestic campaign, and that Postecoglou had backed up his statement that he always wins something in his second season. In his first season at the club, Spurs were top of the league in October but they eventually finished fifth and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup. "There's no getting away from that (league form). I think everybody, certainly the manager, has admitted that," Keane told talkSPORT last week. "But I tell you what – as someone who's played for Spurs, and my two kids are Spurs fans, I don't think anyone cared at the end, because winning the trophy – at the end of the day it's about winning. "He's got a lot of stick, Ange, and to be fair to him, he's backed it up by his comment that he made about the second season and he put himself under a lot of pressure but he's done it. So I think now – give him time." In an interview with Stats Perform, former Tottenham and United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel called on the club to back Postecoglou in the transfer window. "I hope for Postecoglou they keep him and let him build in the summer and see how the start of the season goes," the American said. (Reporting by Aadi Nair in Bengaluru; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Van Rooyen, Leishman qualify for US Open at Oakmont

SOUTH African Erik van Rooyen and Australian Marc Leishman were among those who earned berths at Oakmont next week from US Open final 36-hole qualifiers on Monday. Van Rooyen fired rounds of 64 and 67 to finish first on 13-under 131 at Kinsale Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, with Americans Bud Cauley, Justin Lower and Lanto Griffin sharing second on 137 and countryman Harrison Ott on 138. That left a five-man playoff for the final available US Open berth, a fight that included US PGA Tour players Max Homa, Rickie Fowler, Eric Cole and Cameron Young plus compatriot Chase Johnson. Young won the spot with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Homa was notable as the only player carrying his own bag through the all-day affair. Van Rooyen, 35, missed the cut in his last three US Open starts over the past four years after making his best finish, a share of 23rd, in 2020. He is a two-time PGA Tour winner, most recently at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2023, and was a runner-up at last month's CJ Cup Byron Nelson tournament. At Woodmont in suburban Washington, Americans Ryan McCormack and Trevor Cone took the lead, claiming two US Open spots. That left a three-way playoff for two final US Open spots between Australian Marc Leishman, Colombian Sebastian Munoz from LIV Golf and American Bryan Lee. Leishman, who won his first LIV Golf title in April at Miami, and Lee parred the first two extra holes and booked their berths at Oakmont when Munoz lipped out a par putt to make bogey on the second playoff hole. At Lambton in York, Canada, it was American Kevin Velo setting the pace -- but six others joined him including Danes Niklas Norgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen, England's Matt Wallace, Argentina's Emiliano Grillo, American Mark Hubbard and France's Victor Perez. Americans James Nicholas and Chris Gotterup led four qualifiers at Canoe Brook in Summit, New Jersey, with Mexico's Roberto Diaz and US amateur Ben James taking the last spots. American Zach Bauchou led qualifiers at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, with Mexicans Alvaro Ortiz and Emilio Gonzalez and American Alistair Docherty one stroke back to also qualify.
