STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Switzerland secured a 7-0 victory to bring Denmark's fairytale run to an end on Saturday and reach the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship final against the United States.
Just 48 hours after the Danes made ice hockey history by defeating powerhouse Canada, the Swiss ruthlessly ended their dreams with a precision performance.
Nino Niederreiter, Switzerland's highest-profile hockey export thanks to his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets, scored twice in a devastating first-period onslaught that saw the Swiss establish a 3–0 lead, with Ken Jager also scoring.
Switzerland's offensive barrage continued when Denis Malgin scored a fourth with a moment of individual brilliance, netting his first goal of the tournament after 2:22 in the second period.
Sandro Schmid — recovering from taking a puck to the face in the first period — got the fifth, while Damien Riat and Tyler Moy also found the net as Denmark's hopes evaporated.
Switzerland will face Team USA in Sunday's final after the Americans hammered Sweden 6-2 earlier on Saturday. Denmark will play fellow co-hosts Sweden for the bronze medal.

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have retained their status as the world no. 1 pair - but the fight to stay at the top is far from over as they head into the Indonesia Open this week, with threats coming from both abroad and at home. Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who last month became the first Malaysian shuttlers to reach the top of the world rankings since Lee Chong Wei in June 2017, nearly lost their grip following a quarter-final exit at the Singapore Open. They were fortunate that world No. 2 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen failed to capitalise. The Danes, who had only just surrendered the top spot to the Malaysians a week earlier, needed to reach the final in Singapore to reclaim it - but fell short. Now, Sze Fei-Izzuddin must fend off a new threat - in-form compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik. Fresh off their title win in Singapore, the world No. 3 pair have surged into genuine contention, narrowing the gap to just 1,220 points heading into the Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta. Meanwhile, Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who finished runners-up to Aaron-Wooi Yik in Singapore, continue to hold firm at world No. 7. In the men's singles, Lee Zii Jia has slipped two more spots to No. 15 as he works his way back from injury. However, he remains eligible for all World Tour events thanks to his protected ranking of No. 9. The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week. Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make. "I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou," Vega said on social media on Monday. Van Rooyen, Leishman qualify for US Open at Oakmont
SOUTH African Erik van Rooyen and Australian Marc Leishman were among those who earned berths at Oakmont next week from US Open final 36-hole qualifiers on Monday. Van Rooyen fired rounds of 64 and 67 to finish first on 13-under 131 at Kinsale Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, with Americans Bud Cauley, Justin Lower and Lanto Griffin sharing second on 137 and countryman Harrison Ott on 138. That left a five-man playoff for the final available US Open berth, a fight that included US PGA Tour players Max Homa, Rickie Fowler, Eric Cole and Cameron Young plus compatriot Chase Johnson. Young won the spot with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Homa was notable as the only player carrying his own bag through the all-day affair. Van Rooyen, 35, missed the cut in his last three US Open starts over the past four years after making his best finish, a share of 23rd, in 2020.
