United States beat Switzerland to win ice hockey world championship with sudden-death goal

– Tage Thompson fired a sudden-death winner for the United States as they claimed a thrilling 1-0 victory over Switzerland in the final of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship on May 25, their first gold medal at the tournament since 1933. After impressing with their free-flowing attacking play earlier in the tournament, both teams engaged in an enthralling and bruising tactical battle that remained scoreless for the entire 60 minutes, prompting the overtime period that saw the teams reduced from five to three players on the ice, plus their goaltenders. Swiss net-minder Leonardo Genoni played superbly throughout, but there was little he could do when Thompson broke forward and drove home the winning goal two minutes and two seconds into the overtime period to claim the victory. Many of the American players did not even see the winning puck hit the net. 'I don't know when it did! I just heard the buzzer, and I just jumped out and I thought, hopefully it went in, so I'm glad it did,' a beaming Michael McCarron said with his historic gold medal hanging around his neck. Forward Drew O'Connor added: 'It's huge. Obviously, we know how long it's been. And, you know, we've been looking forward to finally trying to get it done, and I'm so excited that we did it with this group.' Hockey history is clouded by the awarding of world champion status to the winners of the Olympic competition for many years. Given that the Americans have not won Olympic gold since 1980, not one of the current team was even born the last time their nation stood on the top step of the podium, and the winning squad on May 25 were overcome with joy and relief as they celebrated their win. The US had lost 12 straight semi-finals in the tournament before defeating hosts Sweden 6-2 on May 24 to reach the championship game. They had captured just five medals – all bronze – since 2000 (2004, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021). Thompson's goal gave the centre nine points (six goals, three assists) in the tournament. 'It's a crazy stat,' Thompson told about the US' first gold medal in 92 years. 'It's something that everyone in that room took to heart. 'When we got here, we all knew we wanted to be a part of something special, and I think each guy in that room committed... Everybody was positive, pulling for each other and after one common goal. That's why we won.' Earlier on May 25, co-hosts Sweden and Denmark met in the bronze-medal match with the Swedes winning 6-2 to take third place, and the Danes finishing fourth to secure their best-ever placing following their seismic win over Canada at the quarter-final stage on May 22. Ice hockey-Swiss end Denmark fairytale 7-0 to reach world championship final

Ice Hockey - IIHF World Championships - Semi Final - Switzerland v Denmark - Avicii Arena, Johanneshov, Sweden - May 24, 2025 General view after the match Magnus Lejhall/TT News Agency via REUTERS STOCKHOLM - Switzerland secured a 7-0 victory to bring Denmark's fairytale run to an end on Saturday and reach the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship final against the United States. Just 48 hours after the Danes made ice hockey history by defeating powerhouse Canada, the Swiss ruthlessly ended their dreams with a precision performance. Nino Niederreiter, Switzerland's highest-profile hockey export thanks to his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets, scored the first goal of the night. However, it was reviewed for almost five minutes due to the puck appearing to hit his foot, yet it rebounded off his shin pad unintentionally. Ken Jager continued the first-period attack by scoring after a swift run that ended with the puck bouncing off the shoulder of Denmark's Markus Lauridsen and into the net. Niederreiter netted his second to establish a 3–0 lead for Switzerland. Switzerland's offensive barrage continued when Denis Malgin scored a fourth with a moment of individual brilliance, netting his first goal of the tournament after 2:22 in the second period. Earlier in the third, Sandro Schmid — recovering from taking a puck to the face in the first period — got the fifth, and the Swiss thought they had a sixth when Jonas Siegenthaler scored an impressive effort, but it was disallowed for offside. Damien Riat and Tyler Moy found the net to seal the victory as Denmark's hopes evaporated. Switzerland will face Team USA in Sunday's final after the Americans hammered Sweden 6-2 earlier on Saturday. "The Swiss are a great team. We were hoping for a tighter game. We got off to a really tough start. Now we just have to forget about this game. Tomorrow, we want to make history and win the bronze medal. We have to put a smile on our faces," Dane captain Jesper Jensen Aabo said after the match. Denmark will have a chance for redemption when they face their fellow co-hosts, Sweden, in the bronze medal match on Sunday. Ice hockey-Denmark stun Canada, Swedes beat Czechs to reach world championship semis

STOCKHOLM -Canada sensationally crashed out of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in the quarter-finals on Thursday, losing 2-1 to co-hosts Denmark in one of the biggest shocks in tournament history. Sweden swept to a 5-2 win over Czech Republic and will now face Team USA, who beat Finland 5-2 in Stockholm earlier on Thursday, with the Danes facing a Swiss team that thumped Austria 6-0. The Danish defence performed brilliantly through the first two periods but they were finally breached when Sidney Crosby set up Travis Sanheim to score at the 45:127 mark and few in the crowd would have expected Denmark, who had never finished better than eighth at the world championship, to come back. However, Nikolaj Ehlers equalised for Denmark in the 58th minute and the game looked set to go to overtime. Nick Olesen had other ideas, stabbing the puck home from close range to snatch a seismic winner with 49 seconds remaining on the clock to stun the tournament favourites. In Stockholm, a three-goal salvo in the first period set up Sweden for a comfortable 5-2 win over the Czechs, with Lukas Raymond and Leo Carlsson both netting twice for the co-hosts. Asked what Canada's sensational defeat meant for their prospects, Sweden's Mika Zibanejad, who had a superb backhand assist for one of Carlsson's goals, gave a blunt assessment. "Nothing," he told Reuters. "Clearly, it's a good team that's gone out but we have full focus on what we have to do. We spoke about it being a nightmare quarter-final against Czech Republic, it's a good opponent, but regardless of who we play, it's going to be tough. "Full focus on what have to do and what we can do, we take one game at a time and take it from there," he added. The semi-finals will be held on Saturday at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm.

Ice hockey-Versatility key as US chase elusive world gold

STOCKHOLM, - Team USA had to dig deep to beat a well-organised Finnish team in the quarter-finals of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship on Thursday but they eventually cruised to a 5-2 win that took them into the last four and gives them another shot at the gold-medal game. With some of their best players traditionally choosing to skip the annual tournament after a long NHL season, the Americans have struggled to achieve the results their talent pool might deserve, but coach Ryan Warsofsky said he was happy with how his group kept finding ways to get the job done. "I think we've won in a lot of different ways, you know... tonight, we kind of fell behind, we were letting it kind of spiral out of control with some shifts we got it back on the rails a little bit," he told reporters. "Our leadership group with Garland, Thompson, Brady Skjei, Werenski, obviously Keller, really helped our young guys, and kind of got them back on the rails, so we're a confident group." The Americans head into Saturday's semi-finals knowing that they have not won gold at the worlds since 1933, with their last silver medal coming in 1950, and seven bronze medals since is a poor return for a nation of their stature in the game. "I think all these guys love their country and to have that logo, that crest, on their chest, you have a lot to play for. That should give you a lot of juice," Warsofsky said. Asked if he had a preference for who his side would meet in the semis, the coach said: "No. Every team this time of year at this tournament is really good, so it's not going to really matter." The line-up for Saturday's semi-finals will be decided later on Thursday, with the final on Sunday in Stockholm.
