Man baited out of almost R200k and bakkie in sale scam
The parties met in a public place to discuss the sale before a dispute began over the transfer of the agreed amount.
An Umhlanga man has allegedly been robbed of a what he thought was his new vehicle.
The man spent Friday afternoon arguing with scammers before being removed from a bakkie which he had recently transferred money to purchase.
A local security company assisted the victim and the matter has since been reported to police.
Sale agreement turned sour
The would-be buyer responded to an advertisement stating a white Ford Ranger Wildtrak was for sale at a price of R550 000.
The alleged scammers attempted to have the buyer transfer the asking price to them using only photos and videos, but the buyer insisted on seeing the vehicle in person.
On Friday morning, the buyer and friend met with representatives of the seller at King Shaka International Airport where they discussed the transaction.
After agreeing a sale price of R195 000, the buyer allegedly transferred the money to the seller, on the pretence of leaving the airport in a new ride.
However, a dispute began despite the funds being transferred between accounts with the same bank.
'After the monies were transferred, the seller refused to accept that the money was reflecting in his account and informed his employee not to release the vehicle,' stated Prem Balram from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
Robbed at service station
The stand off at the airport continued for several hours before the seller agreed to meet the buyer at a service station in Verulam.
At the service station, two armed men dressed in khaki uniforms arrived in another white Ford Ranger and promptly took the vehicle at gunpoint.
'The men forcefully removed the passenger from the vehicle and drove off with the Ford Wildtrak,' confirmed Balram.
RUSA were called shorty after 6pm, whereafter the victim was taken to the police for assistance.

She was declared dead by Reaction Unit South Africa paramedics, who arrived at the home. Appalsamy, a mother of two, was also stabbed multiple times and her throat slit. She was resuscitated before being taken to a hospital and remains in a critical condition.

KZN elderly woman killed, daughter injured in alleged stabbing
An attacker allegedly killed an elderly woman in her eighties and critically injured her 60-year-old daughter at their home in Hexham, Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday 9 June. A man arrived at the house but found the door locked. He tried calling for his wife and elderly mother but received no response. He then forced his way inside and found both women lying in pools of blood in the passage. Neighbours heard the man calling for help and made multiple calls for medical assistance to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA). Officers and paramedics dispatched themselves and arrived at the scene around 18:45. They declared the elderly woman dead at the scene. She had suffered multiple stab wounds to her face and body. The attacker slit her daughter's throat and stabbed her cheeks, neck, and hands. She was bleeding heavily. Paramedics stabilised her before rushing her to hospital by ambulance. RUSA officials found a large blood-stained butcher knife and a smaller bent knife at the scene. The critically injured woman's son went missing, and RUSA has not confirmed his involvement. Officials are investigating the case as murder and attempted murder. Wrongful arrest at King Shaka International Airport: State to fork out R580k in damages
A woman who was unlawfully incarcerated for 10 days under harrowing circumstances, must receive R580,000 in damages from the police, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled. Image: File The treatment meted out to a woman arrested at King Shaka International Airport on vague suggestions that she may be involved in fraud, and her subsequent 10 nightmare days in custody amounted to horrific suffering. This is according to the Supreme Court of Appeal in awarding her R580,000 in damages. Cynthia Khedama earlier won her case in the KwaZulu Natal High Court against the police. She was initially awarded R580,000 in damages, but on appeal before a full bench of the court the amount was reduced to R350,000. Khedama appealed before the SCA against the reduced amount. She initially claimed R1 million in damages from the police. The SCA, in upholding the appeal, commented that in considering the treatment and conditions which prevailed in almost all places where she was detained, she rightfully must have thought that it would be better for her to rather die. 'The cruelty displayed by the police towards her leaves one with no room to imagine that the police thought that they were still dealing with a fellow human being. The treatment meted out to her was so harsh that one would perhaps be justified to think this was an effort to enable the appellant to be so frustrated as to rather take her life…It was even forgotten that she belonged to the human race,' the court remarked. Khedama was arrested in December 2011 while she was on route to Turkey for a business visit, alongside her employer. She was accused of being associated with a 'kwerekwere' - a derogatory term for a foreign national - as her boyfriend was from Cameroon. The officials demanded her suitcase to check whether she was carrying drugs. Although no incriminating items could be found on her, she was arrested. Khedama's explanation to the police that her ID document had been stolen and that she did report to the SAPS that the perpetrators were using her document, fell on deaf ears. This was the start of her nightmare ordeal, as her hands were cuffed behind her back and she was taken to the police station. She was placed in a small cell, which was dirty with faeces and smelled terribly. She had no blanket with which to cover herself. She described how breakfast, bread and tea were thrown through a hole in the door. Khedama testified that she was so distressed that she thought of taking her own life. A few days later she was told she was being transported to Cape Town. On the way, at Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, she was detained in a filthy police cell overnight in a leaking cell while it was raining. She spent the whole night crying.
