Former star Alabama pitcher released by MLB team
After being designated for assignment by the organization a few days ago, former Alabama Crimson Tide pitcher Spencer Turnbull has been officially released by the Toronto Blue Jays, per the team's MLB transactions' page.
Prior to his release, Turnbull had made only three appearances with the Blue Jays so far this season, one of which was a start. Over that sample size, which was 6.1 innings pitched, the right-hander owned a 1-1 record with a 7.11 ERA and a 4:4 K:BB ratio.
The former Alabama right-hander also made five starts in the minor leagues this season with Toronto's organization where he owned a 7.13 ERA across 17.2 innings pitched.
Following his release by Toronto, Turnbull will now reenter free agency where the veteran right-hander will look for a new team.

There was no need for Tarik Skubal to change things up because his changeup was working. The Tigers ace used his best off-speed pitch in a dominant 13-strikeout effort on Sunday to lead Detroit to a 3-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. That was the ninth time Skubal has collected five strikeouts through two innings of a game, twice more than any other Tigers pitcher since the mound was lowered in 1969, according to Sarah Langs. Fast forward to the top of the third inning, and the 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out the side. He got second baseman Brooks Lee with a four-seam fastball. Then he went back to his changeup to punch out third baseman Jonah Bride and catcher Christian Vázquez. They went down swinging, too. Advertisement After his seventh straight K, Tigers faithful erupted in Comerica Park. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Skubal walked off with well-deserved swagger that his 52-win team commands. For the first time in his career, Skubal had eight strikeouts through three innings. Before the next inning's end, the 28-year-old southpaw had struck out all nine batters in Minnesota's lineup. Skubal didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. It was a single. And it was the only hit he allowed all day. He didn't allow a walk until the sixth inning. It was on a full count. Skubal had 11 strikeouts by that point, and his Tigers had a 3-0 lead, in large part thanks to right fielder Kerry Carpenter, who homered in the first and then hit an RBI triple in the fifth. Skubal strikes out 13, wins 10th straight as Tigers beat Twins 3-0
Tarik Skubal struck out 13 hitters in seven innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 3-0 on Sunday night. Skubal (10-2) only allowed one hit — a clean single to right by Ty France in the fifth inning — as he improved to 10-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his last 15 starts. The last double-digit streak in one season by a Detroit lefty was Earl Whitehill's 11-start stretch in 1930. The strikeouts matched Skubal's career high, last done on May 25 in his 94-pitch shutout against the Guardians. Chris Paddack (3-7) gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Twins. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Kerry Carpenter's solo homer in the first inning, and he added a RBI triple in the fifth before leaving the game with an apparent leg injury. Riley Greene hit a solo homer in the fourth. Will Vest pitched the ninth to pick up his 13th save. Skubal struck out eight of the first nine hitters, including seven in a row, before Byron Buxton lifted a fly ball to Riley Greene on the warning track in left. Buxton is 2 for 15 (.133) in his career against Skubal, though both hits have been homers. Skubal is 5-0 in June, making him the third Tigers pitcher to be 4-0 or better in the month in the last 25 years. The other two, Justin Verlander in 2011 and Max Scherzer in 2013, each won the American League Cy Young Award. Twins LHP Joe Ryan (8-3, 2.86 ERA) starts against Marlins RHP Edward Cabrera (2-2, 3.78) in the series opener in Miami on Tuesday. Former Spartan Jaden Akins went unselected in NBA Draft this week -- so what's next for him? Here's the latest on Akins What's next for former Spartans star Jaden Akins? That's still an unanswered question following the NBA Draft. Akins went unselected during the 2025 NBA Draft this week, with the lone Spartan selected being Jase Richardson by the Orlando Magic with the No. 25 overall pick. Akins wasn't expected to be selected in the two rounds of the NBA Draft, but there was always an outside chance someone would take a flier on him. So what's next for Akins now? Well, we should be seeing him picked up by a team as an undrafted free agent ahead of the NBA summer league. Oddly, though, we haven't seen Akins sign anywhere yet -- which I personally expected to happen by the end of the weekend. Akins started all 72 of the Spartans' games over the last two seasons, averaging double-digits in scoring in both years and providing stellar defensive presence as well. He is slightly undersized for the NBA, though, which ultimately hurt his professional stock in the NBA. Akins worked out for a few teams during the pre-draft process, including the Utah Jazz and Milwaukee Bucks, so we should keep our eyes out for either of those teams signing him for summer league play. I anticipate he will be getting a chance to show what he has at the next level during summer league, and we should hopefully hear of a signing in the next week.
