Mdaka credits PSL's Diski reserve league for Amajita's Afcon success
Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka has given the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), the Premier Soccer League's under-23 reserve league, a fair share of credit for his team's historic Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) triumph.
South beat Morocco 1-0, thanks to Gomolemo Kekana's stunning 70th-minute strike and a tenacious performance, to lift their first U-20 Afcon trophy at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
After Bafana Bafana's 1996 title and Banyana Banyana's success of 2022, Amajita are only the third South African football side to be crowned continental champions.

Many crucial Amajita players - such as Stellenbosch FC defender Tylon Smith, who scooped the Player of the Tournament accolade, Kekana of Mamelodi Sundowns and his teammate in Thato Sibiya, Kaizer Chiefs' Sifiso Timba - play in the DDC for their respective clubs.
'I salute the DDC because it made it easy for us to be able to see players weekend after weekend, going to different places,' Mdaka told SABC Sports.
'Our country is so big, so if it weren't for the DDC, we wouldn't be able to see them. You couldn't drive to do follow-ups on players, but through the DDC, we were able to see players.

Goalkeeper of the Tournament Fletcher Smythe-Lowe, who is on the books of Portuguese side Estoril's U-19s, is the only player who is not locally-based in Mdaka's squad. The 18-year-old put on some impressive displays, especially in the semifinals against Nigeria and in the final against Morocco, where he also walked away with the man of the match award.
Smythe-Lowe dedicated his man of the match award in the final to the SA U-20 team, especially the back room staff.
'This award is for the team. I mean, with only me and without them, we would be nowhere.

Amajita's first success in the U-20 Afcon came in their second final appearance, the first coming when coach Shakes Mashaba's generation of Benni McCarthy, Matthew Booth, Junaid Hartley and Stanton Fredericks lost 1-0 to hosts Morocco in the 1997 last game, 28 years ago.
South Africa had sealed their ticket to the U-20 World Cup, to be staged in Chile from September 27 to October 19, by reaching the semifinals.

Photo: Sia Kambou/AFP Prominent Pietermaritzburg lawyer and sports administrator Poobalan 'Poobie' Govindasamy has stepped into the fray to rescue the South African Football Association (Safa) as it faced relentless criticism from the parliamentary sports portfolio committee. Govindasamy, SAFA's head of legal, was part of the national football delegation that endured a barrage of questions from fuming members on Wednesday. Their concerns were about governance, operations, and overall performance in promoting the sport on both local and international stages. However, a matter that had members seething with anger was the shocking yellow card bungle. As a result, the increasingly popular national team, Bafana Bafana, found itself at the centre of controversy. A few months ago, star midfielder Teboho Mokoena, featured in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, despite being suspended due to accumulating yellow cards. The issue sparked a wave of anger among MPs who questioned the team's management competency in handling player eligibility and disciplinary protocols. This gaff has South Africa standing on the brink of losing three crucial points in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers. This unprecedented bungle could thwart their aspirations for qualification outside of a World Cup hosted on home soil, a feat they last achieved back in 2002. MPs David Kgabo and Athol Trollip demanded clarity on why Safa has not held the responsible parties accountable for their actions and demanded the names of the people responsible. Govindasamy said it was the duty of the team manager, Vincent Tseka, to provide the information to the team ahead of the match. 'I understand the position of Teboho Mokoena's case. The match commissioner from Mauritius, appointed by FIFA and CAF, had not received a suspension letter notifying of Mokoena's situation. It was also not sent to SAFA and the match commissioner (the question of the two yellow cards),' he said. 'He played innocently, and it was only subsequently that the information came to light.' After MPs called for disciplinary steps against Tseka, Govindasamy said SAFA was at a standstill regarding potential action against Tseka, as it awaits crucial information from FIFA. Govindasamy explained the association cannot take any decisive steps until FIFA concludes its investigation into the matter. Govindasamy explained that the ongoing inquiry is a complex one, deeply tied to procedural oversights. 'With due respect, the matter is still under investigation (by FIFA),' Govindasamy replied. 'We've not received the final word on it. "When FIFA makes the decision, only then will Safa's investigation be completed. The investigation is currently incomplete. 'I think the problem was that FIFA, CAF and the match commissioner were not informed of the yellow cards. When you go to the match commissioner's meeting (before the start of a match), that's when you're alerted to this. 'Even Safa was not officially alerted of Mokoena's two yellow cards. It came up after the match.' SAFA president Danny Jordaan also stepped into the fray and promised that SAFA will take action after FIFA decides the matter. 'There will be accountability, but we must wait for all the reports to come in. 'If you act against any staff member, they have the right to take up the matter (in court). Our position is clear: we will defend the position on the side of what is right, but unfortunately, we cannot do that at this stage. 'We can plead that you give us some space so we can deal with the matter,' said Jordaan.

Mambas bite Bafana B in Cosafa Cup opener
The Bafana Bafana B team taking part in the Cosafa Cup in Bloemfontein got off to a rocky start, losing 1-0 to an energetic Mozambique at Free State Stadium on Wednesday. Star attacker Antonio Sumbane provided the 73rd-minute winner for the Mambas. Both teams, as is the nature of the Southern African competition, are definitely developmental combinations. Khumalo's side waned notably in the second 45 minutes. South Africa skinned Mozambique down the right in the opening 45 minutes, where TS Galaxy fullback Puso Dithejane and Stellenbosch FC attacker Sanele Barns combined well and often ran rampant. Yet the Mambas also had opportunities, notably one early on where lively playmaker Sumbane's cross from the left was spilt by goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa to Baptista, who struck at South Africa's keeper after he had regained his footing. Victor Letsoalo was played through on the left and struck onto the crossbar. South Africa continued to press back from the change rooms but when Mozambique's flowing front line found their stride their movement troubled the hosts. In the 59th minute right-back Oscar Cherene squared and Sumbane struck first-time onto the crossbar, the rebound ricocheting in off Dithejane. The video assistant referee (VAR) check found an offside and over-ruled the goal. Then Mozambique did take the lead, substitute Valter Daรบce in space on the right to hit at goal, the shot parried one-handed by Mbanjwa into the path of Sumbane to gratefully sweep into an open net. South Africa hoped they had a penalty when referee Andrisoa Zafimahatoha of Madagascar blew for a handball with just over 10 minutes of normal time left. The VAR showed Vuyo Letlapa's shot was onto the arm of Cherene, who could not have removed the limb, and the decision was overruled.

Bafana Bafana coach Broos to retire after 2026 FIFA World Cup!
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed his plans to retire after the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament. Broos, 73, said he has been in football for over four decades โ both as a player and coach โ to die on the bench. However, at this stage, Broos is focused on ensuring that Bafana Bafana qualify for the FIFA World Cup finals as well as the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Broos, though, said perhaps his involvement with football would be the role of advisor for Bafana Bafana or another team when he finally quits coaching. There has to be one moment where you have to stop. I will not die on the bench. 'So next year, after the World Cup, it's finished. I have been in football since I was 19, first as a professional player and then as a coach. I think when I stop next year, I can be at home with my wife and drink coffee.' 'Football will always be there. But you never know. Maybe I can be an advisor for South Africa or another team or whatever. But I don't want to work every day anymore. That's for sure.' 'So, it looks attractive to me [advisor role] certainly. But we will see next year. It's still one year. 'First of all, I will focus on September and October, then on December, the AFCON. That's the only thing I want now, and then we will see afterwards.'
