Rob Manfred says Blue Jays near ‘top of the list' to host future MLB All-Star Game

New York Times5 days ago
Toronto hosted the city's first and only MLB All-Star Game in 1991 at a new ballpark then known as SkyDome. The Blue Jays have won two World Series since then. They've played through lean years, returned to the postseason, renamed the home park and renovated it. Over three decades later, Toronto is once again in contention to host a future midsummer classic.

Speaking to media at the 2025 All-Star Game in Atlanta, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said the Blue Jays are 'perking up to the top of the list' to host a future All-Star week.
The Blue Jays' recent $400 million Rogers Centre renovation modernized the multi-purpose stadium, putting Toronto in contention to host a major baseball event. But a top factor working in the city's favour is the 34 years since the Jays last hosted, Manfred said.
'I've said before that a really significant factor in terms of All-Star Games is, when did you have the last one?' Manfred said. 'So you can figure out, kind of. It is not the sole determining factor, but it's a significant one. And obviously, I think Toronto was '91 I believe. Obviously they're kind of perking up to the top of the list based on time. I'd like to be back in Toronto.'
Joining a broadcast last season, Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro said the organization was working on bringing the All-Star Game back to Toronto. 'We're on the list,' Shapiro said at the time.
'I'm feeling optimistic on that one,' Shapiro added on the broadcast. 'I'm not exactly sure what the year will be.'
The Jays would likely host the showcase event in 2028, at the earliest. Philadelphia is set to host the 2026 All-Star Game and the Chicago Cubs are 'gaining momentum' to secure the 2027 event.
Many Blue Jays players flashed All-Star moments in recent years. Alek Manoah was the AL starting pitcher in 2021 in Los Angeles, six Toronto players earned All-Star honours in 2022 and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the Home Run Derby in Seattle in 2023. Guerrero declined to participate in this year's derby, but told Sportsnet he is sure to join if Toronto hosts in the future.

Kitchener Rangers Announce Roster Changes For The 2025-26 Season, Two NHL Prospects Set To Return

The Kitchener Rangers announced updates to their roster regarding five of their players for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Forwards Jack Pridham and Christian Humphreys and defenseman Jakub Chromiak will return to the red, blue, and white lineup next season. Pridham and Chromiak return as overage players. In an adjacent move, the club has released overage forwards Cameron Mercer and Chris Grisolia. Pridham, 19, and Humphreys, 19, are set to attend the training camps for their respective NHL teams this fall. Pridham will join the Chicago Blackhawks, while Humphreys will be with the Colorado Avalanche. It would be surprising if either player made the opening lineup, but Pridham has the best chance, as the Blackhawks have a young and rebuilding roster. Kitchener was able to recruit Pridham over from West Kelowna of the BCHL in November during the 2024-25 season. The son of Toronto Maple Leafs Assistant GM, Brandon Pridham, decommitted from Boston University at the beginning of July. Chicago Blackhawks Prospect & Boston University Commit Headed For Kitchener The OHL's first-place Kitchener Rangers are about to get even stronger up front at forward However, after coming over and becoming a top-six impactful forward for the Rangers — he scored 54 points (27 goals, 27 assists) in 48 regular season games and 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists) in 16 playoff games — his decision to return will allow him to continue playing top-line minutes. Humphreys signed with Kitchener in early January last season after playing ten games in the NCAA for the University of Michigan, recording just one assist. The Avalanche's seventh-round draft pick in 2024 chose to decommit from his NCAA scholarship to gain more opportunities for meaningful playing minutes and enhance his development. For Kitchener last season, the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native recorded 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 28 regular season games. In the playoffs, he put up 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in 13 games. Right-shot defender Chromiak was acquired by the club from the Kingston Frontenacs back in October at the start of the season. The Ilava, Slovakia native recorded 32 points (4 goals, 28 assists) in 54 regular season games and 8 points (1 goal, 7 assists) in 16 playoff games for Kitchener during the 2024-25 season. Kingston Frontenacs Sign NCAA-Bound Goaltender & Talented American Forward In the past week, the Kingston Frontenacs made several signings, including a potential starting goaltender and a promising 2009-born American forward drafted in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. Chromiak will occupy both an overage and import player spot for the Rangers for the 2025-26 season. Kitchener has one overage spot, leaving the door open for captain Matthew Andonovski to return if he doesn't play in the AHL or ECHL. 'All three of these guys were such a big part of our team last year, and the possibility of all three returning is a huge boost to our team for this upcoming season. All three players had options to play in other leagues, but we are thrilled they have chosen to stay in Kitchener for another season and be key veteran members of our team,' said Kitchener Rangers GM Mike McKenzie. Cameron Mercer, 20, leaves the organization after playing four seasons with them, recording 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists) in 243 games. He was drafted in the third round (51st overall) in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection and has developed into a reliable bottom-six center at the OHL level. 'We would like to thank Cam for the last four years and his dedication to our program. He was such a popular player around the room and someone that was a pleasure to be around and coach. We will miss Cam but wish him the best of luck in his next chapter,' said McKenzie. The Barrie, Ontario native would be a prime candidate to sign with his hometown Barrie Colts. The Colts swapped overage players with the Niagara IceDogs, sending defenseman Grayson Tiller to his hometown, and acquired forward Alexander Assadourian in return. And overage forward Michael Derbidge is expected to return to the Caledonia Corvairs of the GOJHL. If Brad Gardiner, a former Dallas Stars prospect, returns, this leaves Barrie with one open overage spot. IceDogs And Colts Swap Overage Players In Offseason Trade Earlier today, IceDogs' GM Frank Evola completed his first trade by sending Alex Assadourian and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Barrie Colts in exchange for overage defender Grayson Tiller. Former Barrie Colts forward Chris Grisolia leaves the Rangers organization after just one season with the club, recording 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists) in 55 games. The Vaughan, Ontario native brings a veteran presence of 232 OHL games. He is a former second-round draft pick (24th overall) by Barrie in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. 'Chris was only here for one season, but left a positive mark on our organization with his work ethic and popularity in the dressing room. We wish Chris the best in the next stop on his hockey journey,' said McKenzie. Niagara IceDogs Sign 2025 CHL Import Draft Selections Vladislav Yermolenko & Ben Reisnecker The middle of July is undoubtedly the prime time for OHL teams to secure their import players through the CHL Import Draft. We've witnessed a significant surge in import signings over the past week, and the Niagara IceDogs have put pen to paper with two of their 2025 import draft picks. Twins avert series sweep against the Rockies in 7-1 victory

Royce Lewis hit two home runs — his first career multihomer game — and Joe Ryan struck out 11 in seven innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Colorado Rockies 7-1 on Sunday to prevent a three-game sweep. Coming off his first All-Star appearance, Ryan (10-4) gave up one run and five hits with no walks. The right-hander worked a scoreless fourth inning with two strikeouts in the All-Star Game last Tuesday night at Atlanta. Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Twins. Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer off starter Germán Márquez (3-11) in the third and Harrison Bader added a solo shot for the Twins. Willi Castro tripled leading off the ninth and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Orlando Arcia to make it 7-1. Mickey Moniak homered in the third for Colorado. Jordan Beck and Ryan McMahon each had two hits. Castro drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a groundout by Carlos Correa and scored on a triple by Kody Clemens before Wallner's homer gave the Twins a 3-1 lead in the third. Minnesota racked up 12 hits — six for extra bases — and Twins pitchers had 13 strikeouts. The Twins hadn't announced a starter yet for Monday against Shohei Ohtani (0-0, 1.00 ERA) and the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Rockies begin a three-game set against St. Louis.

President Trump calls for Commanders to go back to old nickname, threatens to block D.C. stadium deal if they don't

President Donald Trump is using the bully pulpit again in the NFL, this time to get a franchise to revert to its former nickname that was changed after decades of controversy. Trump made multiple long posts on Truth Social on Sunday calling for the Washington Commanders to switch back to their old "Washington Redskins" team name. He even threatened to block the Commanders' impending move back to D.C. and their new stadium if they fail to do so. Trump also called for MLB's Cleveland Guardians to go back to their former "Indians" nickname. While not mentioning Trump by name, Guardians president Chris Antonetti made it clear the team isn't interested in going back Sunday. 'I understand there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago, but it's a decision we made and we've gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and we're excited about the future that's in front of us,' he said, via The Athletic. The Commanders have not addressed Trump's post. The Guardians officially changed their team name ahead of the 2022 season, shortly after they stopped using the 'Chief Wahoo' logo, which many saw as racist and offensive toward Native Americans. The Commanders retired their old 'Redskins' nickname in 2020. They went by the Washington Football Team briefly before landing on the Commanders. Their old nickname, which had been in use since 1933, was widely seen as an offensive slur and drew plenty of criticism in its final years of use. 'For obvious reasons,' Commanders owner Josh Harris said in August, that can't return. 'I think [Commanders] is now embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff,' he said earlier this year, via ESPN. 'So we're going with that.' Though it's unclear if the threat of blocking their stadium deal, real or not, will sway the Commanders, both Harris and Antonetti seem very content with their franchises' new names. As for the validity of Trump's stadium threat, the Associated Press wrote: The Commanders and the District of Columbia government announced a deal earlier this year to build a new home for the football team at the site the old RFK Stadium, the place the franchise called home for more than three decades. Trump's ability to hold up the deal remains to be seen. President Joe Biden signed a bill in January that transferred the land from the federal government to the District of Columbia. The provision was part of a short-term spending bill passed by Congress in December. While D.C. residents elect a mayor, a city council and commissioners to run day-to-day operations, Congress maintains control of the city's budget.
