South Africa next? BYD unwraps flagship three-row Sealion 8

Its profile in South Africa gradually starting to grow, BYD has released details of the export market Tang L that will be sold as the Sealion 8.
Changing dynasties
Sharing its name with the standard Tang that went on-sale in its current second generation guise in China five-years ago, the Tang L is, however, of a completely different design as it rides on BYD's Super e-Platform offering both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Although part of BYD's Dynasty range of products at home, the Tang L will adopt the nameplate used by its Ocean series of products for markets outside China, which currently also comprises Seagull/Dolphin Mini, Dolphin, Seal and Shark.
The fundamentals
Shown as the Tang L in January, and set to be offered with five, six or seven seats as per the 'L' suffix, the Sealion 8 measures 5 040 mm long, 1 996 mm wide and 1 760 mm tall, with its wheelbase stretching 2 950 mm.
Practicality-wise, the Sealion 8 has a boot capacity of 675-litres, which increases to 960-litres with the third row folded down. Dropping the middle row sees space increase further to 1 960-litres.
Plug-in hybrid for export only
On the power front, the Sealion 8 will only offer plug-in hybrid powertrains in contrast to the Tang L, which also comes with a fully electric powerplant.
Marketed as DM-i in China, the initial setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with BYD's 29.5-kWh Blade battery pack.
Powering a single motor mounted on the front axle rather than the rear, the setup produces a combined 200kW/315Nm, which BYD claims will result in 0-100 km/h taking 8.6 seconds.

The claimed all-electric range, based on China's CLTC regulations, is a supposed 175 km.
Wearing the DM-p badging – the 'p' denoting performance – the range-topping Sealion 8 retains the same 1.5-litre turbo engine, but in combination with a second electric motor on the rear axle plus a larger 35.6-kWh Blade battery pack.
The result is a combined output of 400kW/670Nm, 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and a claimed CLTC electric-only range of 215 km.
Spec sheet
In terms of spec, the Sealion 8 will come standard a panoramic glass roof, a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment system, wireless smartphone chargers, an augmented reality Head-Up Display, fragrance dispenser, BYD's latest LiDAR system, including autonomous driving, and a 21-speaker sound system.
Watch this space
Penned-in for Australia, but, according to carexpert.com.au, only from the first quarter of 2026, an announcement regarding the Sealion 8 for South Africa remains to be made.
However, given the availability of the plug-in hybrid Sealion 6 and the all-electric Sealion 7, don't be surprised if approval for the local market is granted not long after its arrival Down Under.

Toyota plans to introduce three fully-electric models in South Africa in 2026, a senior executive said on Thursday, entering a nascent electric vehicle (EV) market where Chinese rivals such as BYD are already competing with European carmakers. Volvo dominates EV sales in South Africa, followed by BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but Chinese EV makers are starting to flood the market as they seek new markets amid restrictions on exports to the US and Europe. Toyota only sells hybrid EVs in South Africa, but leads with a commanding 67% of the market for hybrids and plug-in hybrids in 2024, with models such as the Corolla Cross. 'We're launching battery EVs at the beginning of 2026, so we will have three new battery EVs,' Toyota South Africa CEO Andrew Kirby told Reuters on the sidelines of a car components conference, without providing further details. 'We do not believe one powertrain is going to dominate in the future. So we'll have internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery EVs, fuel cell EVs and potentially a carbon neutral internal combustion engine.' Low incomes, high import duties, unreliable power availability and a lack of sufficient charging infrastructure have long hampered manufacturers' efforts to sell EVs in South Africa, whose share of total sales is still low. On Chinese competition, Kirby said while he welcomes competition, 'it's a strategic concern for us and we need to make sure we respond in the right way and as quickly as possible. It's a big challenge'. South Africa's automotive sector 'is at an inflection point', he added, with fairly flat production volumes, a drop in local content and a surge in imported vehicle sales. This has prompted the big local car manufacturers, including Toyota, BMW, Isuzu and Volkswagen, to put together a policy recommendation document sent to the trade and industry minister on how to support and protect the industry, Kirby said. 'We have some taxation structures that are a bit counterproductive and so we've made some fiscally neutral policy proposals,' Kirby said, adding that proposals also include the restructuring of the rebate system. 'We are hoping that in the next six months there will be some short-term interventions that can be announced.'

There are changes with the representatives from time to time and as a result they are unable to register progress. 'This is demonstrated by what happened today [Thursday]. It means we continue to sit with different sets of e-hailers and then we are unable to action whatever is agreed on. 'At the provincial level, I sit with a different leadership. When we are on the ground it's disputed, we're told 'they are not leading us, we don't know them'. They also say they are the rightful leaders.' This, Tlabela said, left the transport department in the province and three metros with no choice but to demand the formalisation of leadership among e-hailers.

Not Atto 1 but Dolphin Surf as BYD starts teasing new entry EV
Dolphin Surf looks set to become South Africa's cheapest electric vehicle when it debuts next months. Confirmed for South Africa earlier this month, BYD has announced that while it will indeed be bringing its entry-level electric car, the Seagull, to market next month, it won't be called Atto 1 as previously alleged. Identity change Introduced in its home market two years ago, the Seagull bears the Atto 1 name in mostly Southeast Asian markets, supposedly as a means of aligning it with the Atto 3 known as the Yuan Plus in the People's Republic. ALSO READ: BYD approves Dolphin Mini for South Africa as renamed Atto 1 In a statement, the local arm of the Shenzhen brand said the Seagull will, however, adopt the Dolphin Surf name as in Europe and not Atto 1 or indeed Dolphin Mini as in South and Latin America. Fundamentals Still to be priced, the Dolphin Surf will be positioned below the 'normal' Dolphin in BYD South Africa's line-up, with its measurements of 3 990 mm in overall length, a height of 1 590 mm and width of 1 720 mm. Riding on a 2 500 mm long wheelbase, the Dolphin Surf is underpinned by BYD's EV-optimised e-Platform 3.0 with a choice of a two Blade battery packs; a 30-kWh unit and a 43.2-kWh. Known as the Seagull in China, the Dolphin Surf name has now been settled on for South Africa. Image: Offered in a single state of tune, the former produces 65 kW and allows for a range of 220 km while supporting DC charging up to 65 kW. Also supporting vehicle-to-load, the Dolphin Surf will reportedly also become South Africa's cheapest EV with a reported price tag below R400 000, thus undercutting the entry-level variant of the Dayun S5 currently priced at R399 990.
