Wrestler Vinesh Phogat gives birth to baby boy

Former World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat gave birth to a boy at a private hospital in Delhi on Tuesday morning. He is the first child of the 30-year-old Julana MLA and wrestler Somvir Rathee.
'Vinesh gave birth to a baby boy this morning at a private hospital in Delhi. Both Vinesh and the baby are fine. It's the biggest joy for the whole family,' Harvinder Phogat, Vinesh's elder brother, told The Indian Express.
Vinesh had announced her pregnancy in March on her social media accounts.
'Our love story continues with a new chapter,' she had posted along with emojis of a foot and a heart, suggesting that the couple was expecting a child.
Harvinder added that the mother and child will be back at Somvir's home soon.
'Vinesh will be back home in a couple of days and we all will visit her after that. The whole of Balali is waiting to welcome Vinesh and her son,' he added.
Vinesh, who was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit just hours before contesting the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final at last year's Paris Olympics, had announced her retirement from the sport soon after the setback, but kept her options open about returning to the mat.
'I just want to say that missing the Olympic medal is the biggest wound in my life. I don't know how much time it would have taken to heal this wound. But as I got love from my fellow Indians, my village and my family members, I guess I would get some courage to make this wound heal. Maybe, I could return to wrestling. I don't know if I would pursue wrestling or not but the kind of courage I got today, I want to use that in the right direction. Our fight has not ended and the fight will continue and I pray to god that the truth will prevail,' Phogat had said while addressing villagers at the village Balali on her return post the Olympics.
In September last year, she joined the Indian National Congress and later contested from the Julana constituency in the Haryana Assembly elections, defeating BJP's Yogesh Kumar by 6,015 votes. Haryana congress leader Kumari Selja too congratulated the Julana MLA. 'Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Congress MLA from Julana, Mrs. @Phogat_Vinesh ji on the birth of a son. I pray to God that the newborn baby brings joy and prosperity to the family and that both of you remain healthy and happy.' Selja posted on X.
Vinesh was also the face of the protests against then Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment of women wrestlers.

Gujarat AAP MLA arrested for attempted murder

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava was arrested late on Saturday (July 5, 2025) night on charges of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a taluka panchayat functionary during a heated altercation in Dediapada, Narmada district, police confirmed on Sunday (July 6, 2025). The clash erupted on Saturday (July 5, 2025) during a meeting in Vasava's constituency, Dediapada. According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, the MLA became enraged after his nominee was overlooked for appointment to the local-level coordination committee, 'Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko' (ATVT). According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, Mr. Vasava became agitated and verbally abused a woman panchayat president before physically attacking Dediapada taluka panchayat president Sanjay Vasava. The MLA allegedly hurled a mobile phone at him, causing head injuries, and then attempted to strike him with a glass. When the glass shattered, Mr. Vasava reportedly picked up the shards, threatened to kill the complainant, and chased him before he escaped. The FIR also accuses the MLA of damaging office property. Police charged Vasava under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempted murder, insulting a woman's modesty, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and property damage. Following the arrest, authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada to prevent unrest, restricting public gatherings. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal condemned the arrest, calling it political vendetta by the BJP after AAP's recent victory in the Visavadar bypoll. In a post on X, Mr. Kejriwal accused the BJP of targeting Mr. Vasava out of frustration and warned that the people of Gujarat would respond to such tactics. 'After losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election, BJP is rattled. If they think such arrests will scare AAP, it's their biggest mistake. The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP's misrule, BJP's hooliganism, and dictatorship, and the people of Gujarat will now give BJP an answer,' his post read. Security remains tight in the area as investigations continue.

EC should conduct Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bengal: BJP's Suvendu

BJP MLA and leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday welcomed the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar where assembly polls are due later this year, and said such an exercise should also be conducted in the Trinamool Congress-ruled state. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued instructions to carry out the exercise in Bihar to weed out ineligible names and ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll, allowing them to exercise their franchise in the polls. "This is a good step, and there will be transparency. Those illegal immigrants who have got themselves enrolled in the electoral rolls in the country should be identified," he said.
