Arne Slot rejects Liverpool's big spending theory with issue 'not being talked about enough'

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Liverpool have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer but Reds boss Arne Slot believes one area is being overlooked in assessing the club's work this summer
Arne Slot has pushed back on the attention Liverpool's big spending in the transfer market is receiving and instead highlighted the exits he has also had to deal with. The Reds have seen a great deal of turnover despite winning the Premier League in the Dutchman's first season in charge.

Liverpool broke the British transfer record to land Florian Wirtz for up to £116million and the team's spending has breached £300m with the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili. And the incoming business may not be complete with speculation continuing over Alexander Isak's future at Newcastle.

But Slot does not believe that tells the whole story as he deals with the departure of players who played significant roles in bringing a title to Anfield last season. The Merseyside club have been required to replace and rebuild rather than simply improving their team in recent months.

'What I feel is not being talked about enough - although you have to make your own decision when you talk about it - [is that] I've lost four players that have started regularly,' said Slot. "And one of them, I, we, his family, lost him. That's Diogo.
"Then Darwin might be on the verge of leaving. Luis Diaz was a definite starter, and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] was a definite starter.
'So normally in the Premier League, teams only buy, and never sell. We do both. We lost players in a good phase of their career. I'm used to that, and it sometimes gives new energy as well.'
Liverpool's boss has less than a week until the team's title defence begins against Bournemouth and three weeks until the transfer window closes. The Reds continue to be linked to Isak, while a number of stars such as Harvey Elliott could still depart.
As a result, Slot does not want to make any premature judgements on whether he has a better squad at his disposal than 12 months ago. The 46-year-old will only make that assessment once August is over.
"That is something I can only tell you at the 1st of September, because the window is still three weeks open. So I do feel that the players we've brought in have done already really well, as expected, because that's why we brought them in.
'But I cannot tell you now if these players are able to perform at the same level every three days, therefore we first have to start the season [to see]. And I did know that Luis Diaz was able to do that, and all the other ones were able to do that. So that is another challenge at the Premier League, because we play so many games."

Man Utd transfer news: Next deal advances as Red Devils continue talks with Ruben Amorim target

Manchester United still have work to do in the transfer market despite adding Benjamin Sesko to their ranks and taking their spending past £200million for the summer There is less than a week until the return of the Premier League and Ruben Amorim will soon learn if his side have progressed over the summer. The Portuguese has a new frontline at his disposal after a deal for Benjamin Sesko was confirmed, to add to recent additions Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. ‌ Sesko was paraded to fans in advance of the club's final friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford. United did not manage to put in a remarkable display but it signalled a landmark en route to the season beginning. ‌ But there is work still to be done. Rasmus Hojlund was in the squad for the game but did not feature amid speculation around his future, while the Red Devils will still hope to find clubs for Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. ‌ And while Old Trafford chiefs may hope to see funds replenished, there are areas of the team that still require improvement. Amorim surely would not say no to having a quality midfielder added to his ranks. With that said, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news and transfer rumours around Old Trafford. Hojlund U-turn Rasmus Hojlund has admitted defeat and is prepared to consider an exit from Manchester United after the signing of Benjamin Sesko pushed him further down the pecking order. The Dane previously stated his intention to fight for his place and rejected the notion of a move to RB Leipzig but United have remained open to his departure. The striker is now more receptive to the idea of leaving Old Trafford after AC Milan came to the table, reports TalkSport. The Italians giants are in talks with United over a loan with opotion to buy with the Red Devils set for a significant loss after spending more than £70m two years ago. New Sancho answer Jadon Sancho is said to be on Atletico Madrid's shortlist of targets for the final weeks of the transfer window. According to Fichajes, Diego Simeone wants to add to his squad out wide and the Manchester United flop is among those of interest. ‌ Sancho had appeared set to join Juventus but that move has seen little progress, while Borussia Dortmund have returned as a possible contender for his signature. The England international could yet find himself with options to consider with Simeone claimed to see Sancho 'as a potential game-changer on the flanks' with his direct style suiting a counter-attacking philosophy. United speak to agents Manchester United were in contact with agents of Brighton star Carlos Baleba over the weekend, per reports. United remain intent on advancing a deal via the player, as they did with Benjamin Sesko, before making an agreement with the Seagulls. Contract and salary remain under discussion, while contact remains with Brighton, though not advanced. Baleba is said to be interested in the move with United want to try and get a deal over the line, with personal terms not expected to be an issue. If their efforts do not pay off in the coming weeks, expect a return next summer. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Arne Slot says Liverpool ‘need to be better' after Community Shield defeat

After his Liverpool team lost the Community Shield in a penalty shootout to Crystal Palace, their manager, Arne Slot admitted the difficulty of bedding in the summer's new signings. 'Sometimes you need some time to adapt offensively or defensively,' said Slot. Two new arrivals in striker Hugo Ekitiké and right-back Jeremie Frimpong got on the scoresheet but Palace, who might have won the game in normal time during their impressive second-half showing, exposed the Premier League champions' weaknesses. Florian Wirtz in a No 10 role and Milos Kerkez as an overlapping left-back on the opposite side of Frimpong made for a highly attacking Liverpool lineup. 'In the whole pre-season we saw we are able to create more opportunities, chances, we dominate maybe even more,' said Slot. 'Now we are better in creating and getting promising situations than we were in the whole of last season but it is also true that we have conceded two against [Athletic Club] Bilbao and two again today. 'We need to be better defensively,' Slot admitted: 'It is disappointing of course, if you go in front and you are not able to win the game. It was close and there were points where I thought we could win it but it went to penalties and they were better in that moment.' Slot refused to panic before his team's defence of the Premier League title, which kicks off on Friday against Bournemouth. He said: 'We are Liverpool, the pressure is always on. Even if we bring 10 players in, or no players in, there is always pressure when you wear a Liverpool shirt.' He offered measured credit to Wirtz and Ekitiké: 'These are players we have brought in for quite a lot of money so they know how to handle the pressure. Both of them played a good game.' The Palace manager Oliver Glasner was delighted to add further silverware to last season's FA Cup. He said: 'I have to give big credit to the players for this win today, we came back and were able to decide the game on penalties. We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance.' Tomorrow we have no influence so we will celebrate tonight and then meet for lunch at training. Then we will schedule the rest of August. If we play in the Conference League, we have more games in August.'

Minute's silence for Diogo Jota cut short before match

A minute's silence in memory of Diogo Jota ahead of the Community Shield at Wembley had to be cut short due to shouting from a small number of Crystal Palace fans. Tributes were paid before kick-off to the former Liverpool forward, 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in Spain on 3 July. Reds fans, some of whom had booed the national anthem, paid respects with a rousing rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone as wreaths were laid on the pitch. But referee Chris Kavanagh cut the minute's silence short after just 20 seconds when it was disturbed by a minority of fans from the Palace end. The interruption was met with a strong response from the Liverpool end, while Eagles supporters also tried to silence those not observing the tribute. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said he was "disappointed" by the incident after his side lost on penalties after a 2-2 draw. "I don't know who did that but there was plenty trying to shush it down, but obviously that doesn't help it," he said. "But it is what it is. You can't control how many fans were here today? Was it 80,000 people? So, yeah, it is disappointing to hear that, but if that person or those persons can go home and be happy with themselves, then..." Liverpool head coach Arne Slot played down the interruption, saying: "I don't think this was planned, or that this was the idea of the fan that made some noise. Maybe he wasn't aware of the fact that it was the minute of silence. "He was just still happy and tried to cheer for his team. And I think then the fans of Palace were trying to calm that person or those persons down, so I don't think he had a bad intention, the guy or people that made noise. "They tried to calm him down, but that was a bit noisy as well. And then our fans reacted: 'Hey, what's happening here?' "So I don't think there's a bad intention to it, because the fans of Crystal Palace and everywhere around the world have paid huge respect to Diogo and Andre and this was, I think, unlucky or, I can't find the right words, but I don't think there was a bad intention in it."
