Fernando Alonso Champions Max Verstappen's 'Fighting' Spirit Amid Red Bull Woes

Aston Martin Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has commented on Max Verstappen's fighting spirit, highlighting his urge to win, despite Red Bull's RB21 F1 car holding him back. The Spaniard admitted that Red Bull has not given Verstappen the best car to fight a championship battle.
Red Bull dominated the current ground effect era that began in 2022, thanks in part to cars designed by aero guru Adrian Newey. The superior performance ensured the team won all but one Grand Prix the following year in 2023. However, Red Bull began experiencing balance problems on the RB20 F1 car after Newey announced his exit in mid-2024.
McLaren Racing's resurgence around the same time meant Red Bull lost out on a constructors' championship victory, but Verstappen managed to win his fourth drivers' title. Fast forward to 2025, and one can see that car problems continue to affect the team's performance. Yuki Tsunoda, who was promoted to the seat alongside Verstappen early in the season, continues to find it challenging to adapt to the RB21.
Verstappen has won only two races in the first ten Grands Prix of the season so far, a stark contrast to his seven wins from the first ten races last year. He secured P5 despite having dropped to P10 after spinning out in the previous round at Silverstone. Despite the car challenges, the Dutch driver is third in the Drivers' Standings below both McLaren drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

MoreAlonso praised Verstappen for his flawless performances while addressing his 2025 campaign. Speaking to DAZN, as quoted by Planet F1, he said:
"I don't think much has changed this season compared to other seasons. I think Verstappen has had his best season to date every year.
"In 2021, he stole the championship away from Lewis Hamilton and then he dominated for several years in a row. He didn't have the most dominant car last year and won the championship with several races to go.
"This year, he may not even have a car that's one of the best two or three, but he's still fighting along. He always performs at the top level. It's another task for Red Bull to give him a car to fight for the championship. But there is no doubt about him."
Adding to Red Bull's woes is the sudden ousting of team principal Christian Horner, who served the team for 20 years. He has been replaced by former Racing Bulls team boss Laurent Mekies.
Given the problems with Red Bull's title challenger and Horner's exit last week, it remains to be seen how that will affect the team's performance for the remainder of the season, especially Verstappen, who is being linked to a potential move to Mercedes.

Jeremy Clarkon's F1 Critique Resurfaces Amid Verstappen Russell Battles

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After making appearances on the Formula 1 grid, former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson's remarks about the state of the sport resurfaced. The reality TV star is no stranger to making bold claims about F1. He is an avid watcher and fan of the racing series. Clarkson appeared on the grid at the British Grand Prix, where he seemed excited for the race, though a couple of months ago, he had given a controversial opinion about the sport. "I've had an idea to make F1 racing more consistently exciting. Don't use tracks where overtaking is difficult," he posted to X back in April. More Photo by"That F1 race this morning gave me an idea of what it might be like to watch cricket," he added in another post. While always following the sport, Clarkson did take a break from attending races mainly due to the problems that modern F1 has with the other drivers' dirty air. In a 2019 YouTube video, the car enthusiast listed his problems with F1. "I mean, I'd rather watch these [flowers] grow than watch a Formula 1 race," Clarkson said. "Get rid of the stewards. Dangerous driving is what the fans want. So if somebody does dangerous driving, I'd give them an extra five championship points. "The cars have to be stronger. They have to be able to withstand, you know, wheel-to-wheel action without bits of front wing coming off. "I want to see [Gilles] Villeneuve and [Rene] Arnoux wheel-to-wheel on the last lap of the French Grand Prix, and if Ferrari don't like that they can f**k off. "In fact, Mercedes can f**k off. They can all f**k off. Let's turn it into a proper sport again and not some health and safety exercise." Clarkson returned to the sport at the beginning of the 2023 season and attended the Bahrain Grand Prix. Clarkson's comments regarding physical racing come during a time when Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has been in the news for his aggressive driving. At the Spanish GP, the Dutch driver collided with Mercedes' George Russell after getting frustrated. While seemingly getting ready to give Russell the place, Verstappen crashed into the side of the Briton's car. Verstappen's approach to racing should appeal to Clarkson, and since the Red Bull driver is falling down the order, there could be potential for altercations. Sergio Perez to Drive For Cadillac in 2026: Report

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is reportedly inching closer to landing a seat on the Formula 1 grid. Perez is currently on the sidelines after getting axed from the second Red Bull seat, though he is apparently nearing a deal with the new Cadillac F1 team. According to rumors and reports, he is getting courted by Cadillac and Alpine, though the 11th team set to debut next season leads the race for his signature. Ed Spencer of Auto Evolution and the reputable German outlet Auto Motor und Sport are both reporting that the announcement is pending and the deal is done. 10th placed qualifier Sergio Perez of Mexico and Oracle Red Bull Racing talks to the media in the Paddock after qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina Circuit on... 10th placed qualifier Sergio Perez of Mexico and Oracle Red Bull Racing talks to the media in the Paddock after qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina Circuit on December 07, 2024 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. More Photo byHowever, there is still no official word or confirmation on the signing. The American-based team is currently focused on getting the 2026 car developed as a new engine formula enters the sport for the first time in years. They spent millions on staff and facilities to make the team a success, but the team is only now prioritizing driver signings. Team principal Graeme Lowdon spoke about the team's process in picking a driver and their patient approach compared to other teams. "We're out of sync with the other teams, which kind of makes it easier," Lowdon told The Race. "It means we can spend a bit more time understanding the attributes that a particular driver can bring and measuring them against what we need. "Normally, you're in a competitive environment, sometimes you can't take long to make a decision, because someone will go to another team. "When we're not in that position, there's a good list of very, very capable drivers that we can interact with and put a team together with. So we're lucky from that one point of view." Who is in the running for the second Cadillac F1 seat? Assuming Perez does get the team's first seat, the second spot on the team is an open field. Among the names in the running are Mick Schumacher, Valtteri Bottas, Jack Doohan, Franco Colapinto, and Zhou Guanyu. The team is prioritizing an experienced pair of hands who can provide specific feedback on the car's requirements. Bottas' name is recurring in the rumor mill for a seat at Cadillac, though he is also getting intense interest from Alpine. Cadillac's slow approach means it will be a while until the full lineup is confirmed. For more F1 news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

Chelsea Are Set To Rival Arsenal For This Barcelona Midfielder: What Will He Add To Maresca's Side?

Chelsea Are Set To Rival Arsenal For This Barcelona Midfielder: What Will He Add To Maresca's Side? In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus stated that Chelsea are set to rival Arsenal for Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado. It has been claimed that the Blues are keeping tabs on the Spanish talent this summer. Casado's Impressive Season In Spanish Football Casado managed to shine at times for the Catalan club in the previous campaign when he produced a series of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The Spaniard registered one goal and picked up six assists in 36 appearances for Barca last season across various competitions. Advertisement The 21-year-old did well to make 44 tackles, 20 blocks and 22 interceptions in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 89.3% in the Spanish top tier (stats via His current contract at the Nou Camp will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it tough for the Blues to snap him up on a cut-price deal this off-season. (Photo by) What Will Casado Add To Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca's Team? Casado loves a tackle and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. He doesn't mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and is a tidy passer of the ball as well from midfield. Advertisement The Spanish sensation is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play as a box-to-box midfielder or as a right-back if required. However, he would need some time to adjust to the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League if the Blues manage to bring him on board this summer. We can expect Casado to add more quality to Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca's team. He has what it takes to nail down a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge in the coming seasons. At 21, the future looks quite promising for Casado as long as he continues to improve with each year. Therefore, Maresca would be wise to step up his pursuit of the Spanish midfield ace in this summer transfer window. Casado might even help the West London club compete for some major silverware over the next decade.
