Dating scam: Men in court after unsuspecting woman lost R3 million to online lover

Three men are on Tuesday scheduled to appear in court after they were arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, for defrauding a woman of her R3 million in a dating scam.
Last week, IOL reported that a third suspect was arrested for an intense scam where an unidentified woman lost R3 million in the name of love, back in 2024.
The victim, whose identity is withheld to protect her from victimisation, said she developed an online relationship with a person she believed was a white man called 'Mark Hermanus', whom she had met on Facebook.
Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said after exchanging numbers, the woman and the scammer started chatting on WhatsApp, and once they had 'gotten to know each other", the scammer asked her to lend him money to pay the medical bills of his sick son.
But these weren't modest medical bills, and the unsuspecting woman eventually parted with R3 million, which she deposited into two bank accounts.
After the crime was reported to the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, an investigation ensued and the first suspect, Gabriel Okori, was arrested in Cape Town in October 2024. Okori, a Nigerian national, was in November released on bail of R5,000. Okori has been attending his court appearances on charges of fraud and theft.

In March, IOL reported that a second suspect, Justice Motsamai Khanyapa, was arrested in connection with the scam. Khanyapa was arrested in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, and he was released on bail of R1,000 by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

The Hawks said all three accused men - Okori, Khanyapa, and Mnguni - will appear on Tuesday before the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. Mnguni is expected to apply for bail.
According to the Hawks, the money defrauded from the unsuspecting woman was deposited into the bank accounts of Khanyapa and Mnguni.
Meanwhile, head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, commended the 'meticulous investigation' conducted by the investigating team, and cautioned members of the public to be vigilant and safeguard themselves against such scams.
Since last year, IOL has been running the scammed series where several women and men have lost their hard-earned money, including pensions and bank loans, through romance scams. The victims have regrouped and are knocking on different doors, demanding answers.

Man spotted carrying a printer near guesthouse led to fake cash bust
The three men arrested in connection with a counterfeit money racket in Pretoria are Cameroonian nationals. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Philliph Mumbai, 42, exited an e-hailing service vehicle in Elardus Park and was walking to a nearby guesthouse when he was stopped by patrolling police officers on July 1. "They questioned him about a printing machine he was carrying and where he was headed. When he could not answer, the police requested t he take them to the guesthouse. On arrival, they discovered Maxwell Basong, 39, and Tieze Zemeniouh, 38, operating a similar printing machine and printing counterfeit money. "During the arrest, Mumbai allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with R2,000 in exchange for their release." The men have appeared in the Pretoria magistrate's court on a charge of possession of counterfeit goods. Mumbai also faces a charge of corruption. The case was postponed to July 10. Mahanjana said: "It is alleged the three accused operated a syndicate involved in the printing and distribution of counterfeit rand and US dollar notes. The counterfeit money was allegedly sold and used to purchase goods."

Watch: Body found at base of Drakensberg waterfall, murder probe launched
The recovery of a man's body from the Thonyelana River, at the base of a 40m waterfall in the Drakensberg, has resulted in a case of murder being opened. The Witness reports that on Wednesday morning, Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue, Pietermaritzburg K9 Search and Rescue and Ladysmith K9 members were called out to assist the Upper Tugela police. The teams were tasked with the recovery of a body in the Drakensberg area below Cathedral Peak. According to a statement, due to the difficult and inaccessible terrain, arrangements were made by the uTugela District Office for assistance from the Pretoria Air Wing Unit. Members were airlifted to the area pointed out by the person who discovered a body in the Thonyelana River, at the base of a 40m waterfall. The witness said he suspected there was a second victim on a ledge, approximately 30m from the base of the waterfall. Rescue team members were hoisted onto the ledge and conducted a search, discovering clothing on the ledge, but no second victim was found. The body of a 39-year-old Lesotho national was recovered from the river, airlifted to the nearest accessible road and handed over to members of the Department of Health. Police spokesperson Contable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the rescue had taken place and that a murder investigation had been opened. 'The victim sustained multiple injuries [to his] body,' Ngcobo says. The motive for the killing is yet to be established. Comrades runner Moira Harding rules out return to Comrades next year following harrowing ordeal

Moira has since returned to Cape Town where she is recovering. Three weeks ago, IOL was the first news outlet to report that the 54-year-old runner had gone missing. At the time, IOL reported that Harding completed the race just before 5pm and had not been seen since. This kicked off a massive search for the 54-year-old Kommetjie runner. Workers who found her were able to contact Harding's husband and the necessary emergency services attended to her. Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics said paramedics, police, and Metro Police were called to the scene where Harding was found in a critical condition. She was airlifted to a hospital in uMhlanga. In a post on her social media, Harding thanked all those who helped search for her. "I went missing at the end of the Comrades Marathon and was found 15 hours later, unconscious and unresponsive due to severe dehydration and extremely low sodium levels resulting in disorientation and delirium," she explained. Harding said the prayers of those who supported and prayed for her carried her through one of the toughest moments of her life. "A special, heartfelt thanks to the people who found me and alerted the emergency services, to Brigadier Saunders, the police teams and staff at Netcare uMhlanga, I couldn't have wished for better care or more compassionate professionals. You saved my life," Harding said. Harding further shared a special tribute to her husband, children and family who searched high and low for her.
