
Environment impact study for Great Nicobar project downplays earthquake risk
According to the nearly 900-page-long EIA report commissioned by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation and executed by a private consultant, Vimta Labs, the probability of a mega earthquake, such as the earthquake of 9.2 magnitude that led to the 2004 tragedy, was 'low'.
The EIA study, while acknowledging the region's proximity and susceptibility to massive earthquakes, primarily draws on a 2019 study by scientists of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur stating that the 'return period', a term for the likelihood of a similar-sized earthquake reoccurring, is 420–750 years for mega-earthquakes (magnitude of 9 or more). The return period is a shorter 80-120 years for large-magnitude earthquakes (>7.5).

The IIT-Kanpur report had analysed sediments from the Badabalu beach in South Andaman and revealed evidence of at least seven large tsunami events in the last 8,000 years in the region. The report states: 'Andaman Segment has enough accumulated strain to trigger a mega tsunamigenic subduction zone earthquake in near future and that there was a 2,000-year gap in the region's sediment history added uncertainty to the prediction of future earthquakes.' This bit doesn't appear in the EIA study.
Speaking to The Hindu, Professor Javed Malik, the scientist who led the IIT-Kanpur study, said while their study did trace the history of major tsunamis, planners of any major infrastructure project in the Nicobar Islands should ideally conduct a 'site-specific study'. This was because an earthquake, such as the one in 2004 that was centred in Indonesia's Banda Aceh, could play out differently if the origin point was the Nicobar Islands. The Andaman-Sumatra fault line was known to be vulnerable to massive earthquakes and there was still insufficient knowledge regarding what stretches along this line were likely to rupture.
He said in 2020, in a meeting with government officials, he had pointed out that studies similar to those conducted in Andaman ought to be done in Car Nicobar and Campbell areas of Nicobar, but he was still waiting to hear on it. 'Not only can we get insight into historical earthquakes but we can estimate inundation patterns and this can help plan infrastructure projects,' he added.

Other scientists suggest that there are multiple sources of tsunamigenic-earthquakes that are unknown.
C.P. Rajendran, geo-scientist and professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, said that his own studies over the years and emerging studies have shown that while the Banda Aceh event may have released a certain amount of pent-up energy, there were several other 'parallel rupture lines south of the Andamans [and towards Nicobar] whose pent-up energy and history were unknown'. 'To add to that, earthquake recurrence is a non-linear process. You could have centuries without any mega-quake and then suddenly a massive one. There are local fault lines in the Great Nicobar Island [GNI] as well as changes in land levels prior to a massive earthquake. This is an extremely geo-dynamic area and major infrastructure projects here are particularly vulnerable,' he told The Hindu. 'It is better to avoid such an area for a port or a container terminal.'
A senior scientist in the Ministry of Earth Sciences acknowledged that while no specific site studies in the Nicobar Islands were commissioned for the project, it would be impossible to forecast when a massive earthquake was likely and a 'calculated risk' had to be taken in executing the project. 'Depending on the nature of buildings and infrastructure, design codes will be incorporated but we can never say when the next major quake or tsunami will occur. There is much that is unknown,' the scientist said.

The GNIP envisages a trans-shipment port, an international airport, township development, and a 450 Megavolt-Amperes (MVA) gas and solar-based power plant in the GNI. Though accorded an environment and preliminary forest clearance by the Centre, concerns about the potential loss of biodiversity, tree-felling, and impact on resident tribes prompted the National Green Tribunal to order a review of the environmental aspects of the project.
The islands were among the worst affected regions during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami-earthquake that claimed at least 1,500 lives. Atleast 10,000 Indians perished in the tsunami.
The region, which comes under the highest seismological category of five, is prone to earthquakes as it has the Indian plate diving beneath the Burmese Microplate along the Andaman Trench in a process known as 'Subduction.'

ISRO scientists share new findings while studying Black Hole GRS 1915+105
BENGALURU: A team of scientists and researchers from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday listed out their unique findings while studying the Black Hole as part of their study. They noted that the X-ray brightness from fascinating and mysterious black hole- GRS 1915+105- fluctuates dramatically over time. It exhibits a unique pattern of alternating low-brightness ('dips') and high-brightness ('non-dips') phases, each lasting a few hundred seconds. During the high-brightness phase, the team discovered that the rapid flickers in X-rays were repeating about 70 times per second (frequency 〖ν〗_(QPO) ∼70 Hz), known as Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs). Interestingly, such 'fast' flickers vanish during the low-brightness phase, noted the researchers Anju Nandi from ISRO, Santabrata Das from IIT- Guwahati, Sreehari H from Hafiza University and Seshadri Majumder from IIT Guwahati. India's first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory, AstroSat, has been continuously monitoring the black hole GRS 1915+105 since its launch in September 2015 and is working to provide insights into source's behaviour. Explaining what causes the mysterious fast flickers, the research team in the report stated that they found that these rapid QPOs are intimately connected to a super-heated cloud of energetic plasma surrounding the black hole, known as corona. During the bright high-energy phases when QPOs are strongest, the corona becomes more compact and significantly hotter with higher luminosity. Conversely, in the dimmer dip phases, the corona expands and cools, causing the flickers to vanish. This pattern suggests that the compact oscillating corona seems to be the origin of these fast QPO signals.

IIT Guwahati team gives bamboo an automobile-ready touch
GUWAHATI A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) have fused bamboo with biodegradable polymers to develop a composite material as a suitable replacement for conventional plastics used in automotive interiors. The cost-effective and eco-friendly composite made from Bambusa tulda, a fast-growing bamboo species grown across India's northeast, has potential applications in furniture, electronics, and packaging industries too, the researchers said. The team said properties such as high strength, thermal stability, and low moisture absorption make the composite a greener alternative to plastics. The findings of the team's research were published in the journal Environment, Development and Sustainability. The paper is co-authored by Poonam Kumari, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and research scholars Abir Saha and Nikhil Dilip Kulkarni. The IIT-G researchers tested four bamboo-based composite formulations consisting of Bambusa tulda fibres reinforced with bio-based or petroleum-based epoxies. By treating the bamboo fibres with alkali, the team improved its compatibility with the base polymer, resulting in enhanced durability for real-world use. The developed formulations were then evaluated on 17 different parameters to test their tensile strength, thermal resistance, impact durability, water absorption and cost per kilogram, among others. While these formulations had distinct strengths, none of them possessed all the properties necessary to provide a balanced and high-performing option. To address the issue, the team employed a structured evaluation method known as Multi-Criteria Decision-Making. The team identified the bamboo composite made with bio-based epoxy FormuLite as the best-performing option with low moisture absorption, significant thermal stability, and mechanical strength. 'The cost-effective nature of the composite, priced at ₹4300 per kilogram, makes it an eco-friendly solution for automotive parts, such as vehicle dashboards, door panels and seat backs, among others,' the paper stated. 'The developed composite can be used for designing components/parts in consumer electronics, automobiles, aerospace, sustainable building materials, etc. The product will replace wood, iron, or plastic components and will have similar cost and help fulfil the sustainable development goals,' Dr. Kumari said.

NEW DELHI: Offering a practical, eco-friendly substitute for plastic components in cars, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed a bamboo-based composite that can be used in dashboards, seat backs, and door panels, combining high mechanical strength with low environmental impact. These composites can even replace plastic or wood parts in electronics, furniture, and building materials The material, made using Bambusa tulda, a fast-growing bamboo species from Northeast India, is reinforced with biodegradable polymers and has demonstrated strong performance in terms of thermal stability, tensile strength, and moisture resistance, key requirements for automotive interiors. The research, led by Poonam Kumari, professor in the department of mechanical engineering, addresses the growing need to reduce plastic waste and transition towards renewable materials in industrial applications. The team tested four bamboo-based formulations using both bio-based and conventional epoxies, evaluating them on 17 parameters including tensile strength, thermal resistance, water absorption, and production cost. To identify the most balanced formulation, the researchers applied a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method, which pointed to a bio-epoxy blend made with FormuLite as the most suitable option. This variant demonstrated high tensile strength (144.76 MPa), significant thermal stability (glass transition temperature of 111.72°C), and the lowest moisture absorption (4.49%). The cost was also competitive at Rs 4,300 per kilogram, making it suitable for components like dashboards, seat backs, and door panels. 'These composites can replace plastic or wood parts not just in automobiles but also in electronics, furniture, and building materials,' said Kumari. 'Their use aligns with India's Green Tech Revolution and Make in India goals, and supports several Sustainable Development Goals.' The team also performed a life-cycle assessment of the material, with plans to scale up production using industrial processes like resin transfer and compression moulding. The research has been published in Environment, Development and Sustainability (Springer Nature), with Kumari co-authoring the paper alongside her PhD students Abir Saha and Nikhil Dilip Kulkarni. The initiative builds on IIT-Guwahati's broader sustainability agenda, reflected in its high ranks in both the NIRF and global SDG-based rankings. With this development, the institute adds momentum to the use of indigenous materials in high-performance engineering applications.
