Shotts boss thrilled to keep duo at club for another Premier Division campaign
Shotts boss John McKeown is delighted to keep skipper Ally Martin and forward Liam Craig at the club after the duo extended their stay at Hannah Park.
Striker Craig - the man who kept them in the top flight this season with a double on the last day of the season - and midfielder Martin have committed for the 2025/26 campaign and it is a big boost to McKeown after a host of exits this summer.
He said: 'Both Liam and Ally are good, experienced players. We lost a lot of players this summer and we didn't expect to lose as many as we did, so it is good to keep a bit of stability there.
'Ally Martin has been with the club for nine years and he's the club captain. He's 39 but he is still one of the fittest players in the squad. He leads by example and it is great to keep him on board.
'That kind of loyalty is unheard of these days so fair play to him. He has a lot to juggle with his family life and his day job as a police officer. It takes a bit of dedication.
'Liam Craig came in towards the end of last season so he arrived at a difficult time.
'It was hard for him to break into the side but he managed to come in for the last few games and scored the double that kept us in the league on the last day of the season against Gartcairn.
McKeown also hopes to add to his squad in the coming weeks.
He added: 'We've got one or two in the pipeline, but nothing sorted yet. We are also hoping to get a player on loan from a senior club so we'll see what happens with that.'
Meanwhile, the club will kick-off their pre-season friendly schedule tomorrow with a closed doors clash against Newmains.
Following that, Shotts face Fauldhouse away on Saturday July 5, Caledonian Braves away on Tuesday, July 8, Cumbernauld Colts away on Saturday, July 12, Thorniewood away on Wednesday, July 16, Blantyre Vics at home on Saturday, July 19 and they finish up with a home clash against new West of Scotland League Fourth Division outfit East Kilbride YM on Tuesday, July 22.
McKeown, whose side will begin their West fo Scotland Premier Division campaign on Saturday, July 26, said: 'We've got a few games lined up and we play our first game against Newmains on Saturday.
'There is work getting done to both clubs' pitches so we've got Dalziel Park booked for that so we are looking forward to it.
'Everything is starting to take shape.'

Gartcairn ready to dish out a hiding to rivals, says boss
The MTC Park co-gaffer Ryan McStay feels his side are on top form Gartcairn co-boss Ryan McStay is convinced his side will give a team a 'hiding' this season, but was happy with Saturday's 3-0 win over Neilston. In blustery conditions, the Airdrie side went in 1-0 at the interval thanks to an Adam McGowan strike, with second-half goals from Dom Morgan and Jordan Moore sealing the win. McStay reckons they could have scored more goals, and want to rack up a big score at some point after also defeating Darvel the previous week. He said: 'I was delighted with the result but also the performance. 'It was very windy, we played against the wind in the first half, and said to the boys to make sure it doesn't affect the way we play. 'Neilston had two good convincing wins at home, they try to play football the right way, and I knew they were going to be a threat. 'I felt in the first half we were still the better team, wee Gowser has started the season really well and got us a goal just before half-time. 'We told them to go out, impose themselves on the game and relax, and just have a bit of composure in the final third. 'I'm confident, with the attacking players in the squad, they're going to give somebody a good hiding. 'That was probably the most impressed I've been with them since we came back, including pre-season. We were relentless, we never gave Neilston a chance to get on the ball. 'Dom Morgan scored a cracking goal with his left foot from 30 yards into the top bin, and Jordan Moore came on and scored after five minutes, which will give him a bit of confidence as well. 'Their keeper got man of the match, which shows the dominance we had in the second half.' Left-back Danny MacKenzie will be out for a spell, having broken his ankle in the weekend win. McStay said: 'It was an innocuous challenge, but Danny twisted his ankle and the Neilston boy has accidentally stood on it and broken it in two places. 'We'll give him all the rehabilitation he needs, and hopefully Danny comes back stronger and plays a big part.' Gartcairn visit Kirkintilloch Rob Roy tonight on league duty, before travelling to St Andrews United in the South of Scotland Challenge Cup first round on Saturday, with chairman Martin Peacock forking out for a pre-match meal in the Fife town. McStay said: 'The league is our main objective, but we want cup runs. 'St Andrews is a hard tie away from home, they finished mid-table and have signed the likes of Greig Spence, so they've added experience, and that will be a tough ask. 'But I fancy us against anybody at this level. If you want to go far in cups you need to play the best teams. 'Rob Roy will be another tough game, and after that we'll turn our focus to St Andrews. 'It's a big week for the club, even this early in the season.'

Gartcairn's final pre-season clash comes at a cost ahead of Whitletts opener
The Airdrie side are gearing up for the West of Scotland First Division Gartcairn co-boss Darren Barr was happy to end pre-season on a winning note but admits it came at a cost ahead of Saturday's West of Scotland First Division opener at Whitletts Victoria. The Airdrie-based outfit ran out 2-1 winners away to East of Scotland Premier champions Musselburgh Athletic at the weekend, with Dom Morgan and Stefan McCluskey on target. But Barr's side finished the game with 10 men after left-back Jordan Allan was shown a straight red card, while Kyle Hutton is facing a fitness test after picking up a knock. Barr said: 'The boys put in a really good performance on the eve of the season starting, so it gives them a bit of belief because Musselburgh are a good team and they did really well last year, winning their league. We had a really good 60-65 minutes. 'There's a few people that were still on holiday and some injuries to contend with. Kyle Hutton took a sore one so we will need to see how he is as the week progresses and we had a man sent off as well, so those two things put a bit of a dampener on it a bit.' Gartcairn are among the favourites for the title having been relegated from the top flight last season, but Barr is sure his players can handle that expectation. He added: 'Looking at the squad, we are in decent place and we are still building. Pre-season is all about getting minutes in the legs and get the partnerships going, working cohesively, so Saturday was a good step towards that. 'Pressure of being one of the favourites is fine. You've obviously got Darvel in there and a few others, so I think it is going to be a really strong league. 'Some people might have us as favourites but there are plenty of other strong sides in there. 'We'd love a winning start but I'd rather have a strong finish to the season, that is the most important thing. 'The boys know the pressure on them, but all we'll do is take it one game at a time and focus on the way we want to play. 'With the quality in the squad we know we can compete.' On the Whitletts clash, he added: 'I'm expecting a really tough match. We've watched Whitletts a couple of times and they will give us a really hard first game. 'It is about how we approach it and we will prepare them as best we can. Hopefully we can get off to a positive start.'

Gartcairn squad 'is in place' as boss targets First Division title triumph
Ryan McStay says the Airdrie club are in a good place ahead of the new season Gartcairn co-boss Ryan McStay says the club is in a good place, with 19 players lined up and ready to kick off next season in the West of Scotland First Division. Though eight clubs are guaranteed promotion into the Premier Division next season due to Lowland League reconstruction, McStay has targeted the title. And he says obtaining their SFA Licence could see the Airdrie club leap right up to the Lowland League West. He said: 'We know there's going to be eight promoted, but we're hoping to build a squad that's going to be challenging for the league. 'There's still talk that if clubs in the Premier haven't got their licence, there's a possibility that we could maybe jump up two leagues to the new top league. 'We need to look after ourselves, start well, do things right. 'We have a new analysis room up at the ground, so we're trying to do things right, and make sure the boys buy in to what we're trying to do, crack on, and have a successful season. 'It's going to be a tough league, when you look at the teams that are in it, but we're going to be in a good position. 'We started back pre-season training earlier this month, we've just got another lad confirmed that's going to sign for us, so that takes us up to 19 for the season. 'We're in a very good position, the squad is looking really good. 'We have a few people coming who are going to do pre-season with us, so people might move on, and others pop up. 'I've been speaking to other managers who are sitting on 12 or 13 players and struggling to get others in, so for us to be sitting on 19 confirmed at this point means we're in a great position.' Gartcairn have brought in Ryan Dakhil from Pollok as assistant manager, and McStay said: 'We've brought in Ryan, I know and trust him very well. 'Ryan probably knows everyone in this set-up, so he's good to bring players in, and he will be a massive asset.' Goalkeeper Kieran Hughes, defenders Ryan Locke and Scott Rumsby, midfielder Kenny Barr and forwards Robert Thomson and Ross Caldwell have all left the club. Meanwhile, Gartcairn drew 2-2 with Lowland League Broxburn on Saturday in their first pre-season friendly. McStay said: 'It was a brilliant run out for the lads against a good team. There are plenty of positives to take.'
