In a message posted on Truth Social, his private social network which has become the primary communication channel for the White House, the US president stated that products imported from the European Union would be subject to a 30% surcharge if no agreement is reached that meets his expectations – specifically, a "complete open" European market for American goods.
On July 7, Trump acknowledged that his commercial threats had yet to yield results and, by executive order, postponed the deadline for implementing the unilateral tariff increases – originally announced on April 2 and already delayed once – to August 1. These repeated delays have earned the US president an unflattering acronym: TACO, for Trump Always Chickens Out. Markets, for their part, were largely unmoved when the White House occupant again brandished the threat of tariff hikes in letters sent to major US trading partners, including South Korea and Japan, on July 8.
After Canada on July 10, Mexico was the next recipient of these messages posted on Truth Social on Saturday. While the United States' northern neighbor was threatened with a 35% increase in import taxes, a 30% hike was directed at its southern partner. In both cases, the president mixed often questionable economic arguments with considerations unrelated to trade.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen quickly responded by noting the bloc's 'commitment to dialogue, stability, and a constructive transatlantic partnership.' "We have always been very clear that we prefer a negotiated solution. This remains the case, and we will use the time that we have now till the 1st of August," she said during a press conference on Sunday. "We've prepared for this, and we can respond with countermeasures if necessary." Von der Leyen also said that the the EU will suspend retaliatory tariffs on US goods scheduled to take effect Monday in hopes of reaching a trade deal with the Trump administration by the end of the month. German chancellor Friedrich Merz adopted a sanguine tone in the media telling national broadcaster ARD on Sunday that he had spoken to von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron and Trump on Friday and they agreed to attempt seeking a deal over the next two weeks. Merz said negotiations were advanced and underlined that other countries that have received similar letters – including China and Canada - have usually found reasonable solutions. 'Nobody needs new threats or provocations right now. What we need is for the EU to continue serious and focused talks with the US,' the country's finance minister, Lars Klingbeil, told Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung. Other European leaders joined von der Leyen in urging Trump to give negotiations more time and warnings of possible new tariffs on Washington. 'With European unity, it is more than ever up to the Commission to assert the Union's determination to resolutely defend European interests,' French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement posted on X. Italy's Meloni cautions not to trigger a trade war Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office said "it would make no sense to trigger a trade war between the two sides of the Atlantic." Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told broadcaster DR that Trump was taking a 'pointless and a very shortsighted approach." Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warned in an interview with the country's public broadcaster SVT that 'everyone loses out from an escalated trade conflict, and it will be US consumers who pay the highest price.' Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof wrote on X that the announcement "is concerning and not the way forward." Data from the General Administration of Customs said exports climbed 5.8 percent year-on-year, topping the five percent forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists. Imports rose 1.1 percent, topping the 0.3 percent gain predicted and marking the first growth this year. China's exports reached record highs in 2024 -- a lifeline to its slowing economy as pressures elsewhere mounted. Beijing's efforts to sustain growth have been hit by a bruising trade war with the United States, driven by President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, though the two de-escalated their spat with a framework for a deal at talks in London last month. Monday's customs figures showed Chinese exports to the United States surged 32.4 percent in June, having fallen the month before, according to an AFP calculation based on official data. "Growth in export values rebounded somewhat last month, helped by the US-China trade truce," Zichuan Huang, China economist at Capital Economics, said. "But tariffs are likely to remain high and Chinese manufacturers face growing constraints on their ability to rapidly expand global market share by slashing prices," Huang said. "We therefore expect export growth to slow over the coming quarters, weighing on economic growth," she added. Customs official Wang Lingjun told a news conference on Monday that Beijing hoped "the US will continue to work together with China towards the same direction", state broadcaster CCTV reported. The tariff truce was "hard won", Wang said. "There is no way out through blackmail and coercion. Dialogue and cooperation are the right path," he added. Stuttering growth Analysts say China's economy is expected to have expanded more than five percent in the second quarter thanks to its strong exports. Official figures are due to be released on Tuesday. But they also warn Trump's trade war could cause a sharp slowdown in the final six months of the year. Beijing is targeting an overall expansion of around five percent this year -- the same as last year but a figure considered ambitious by many experts. First-quarter growth came in at 5.4 percent, beating forecasts and putting the economy on a positive trajectory. Beijing has struggled to sustain growth since the pandemic as it battles a prolonged debt crisis in the property sector, chronically low consumption and high youth unemployment. Data released last week showed that consumer prices edged up in June, barely snapping a four-month deflationary dip, but factory gate prices dropped at their fastest clip in nearly two years. Many economists argue that China needs to shift towards a growth model propelled more by domestic consumption than the traditional key drivers of infrastructure investment, manufacturing and exports. Beijing has introduced a slew of measures since last year in a bid to boost spending, including a consumer goods trade-in subsidy scheme that briefly lifted retail activity.

A social media post by Antonio Tajani, Italy's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, has sparked debate around the origins and symbolism of the European flag. Writing on X to mark 40 years since its official adoption as the European Union's emblem, Tajani described the flag as 'blue like the cloak of the Madonna, with the 12 stars of the tribes of Israel arranged in a circle". 'A symbol of our values of freedom, of our Judeo-Christian roots,' he added. It has triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with users pointing out that the EU itself describes the flag as standing for 'the values and shared identity of millions of Europeans united in their diversity' and a 'symbol of unity, democracy, and peace". It's not the first time Antonio Tajani has made the claim. Euroverify detected a further two posts on X, in 2013 and 2021, in which he associates the colour blue with the Virgin Mary's mantle and the stars with the 12 tribes of Israel. One historian told Euroverify that Tajani's interpretation is 'essentially incorrect". The search for a 'secular' flag The search for a European flag began in the 1950s when the Council of Europe — the Strasbourg-based human rights organisation which includes 46 member states, and which is not an EU institution — began considering dozens of proposals. Those proposals have been preserved and archived on the Council of Europe's website, which specifies that several designs were rejected because of their religious overtones, such as references to the Virgin Mary. 'These were set aside to keep the flag secular,' the website states. The Council of Europe eventually short-listed two options, one of which was the circle of 12 yellow stars on a blue background, proposed by a member of staff named Arsène Heitz. Heitz's proposal was adopted by the Council of Europe's committee of ministers in 1955. Three decades later, in 1983, the European Parliament decided to adopt the same flag as the symbol of the European Communities, which later became the European Union. That decision was approved by EU leaders in 1985. According to the Council of Europe's website, the number of stars was chosen for its 'symbolism", representing 'harmony and perfection". No official religious connotations Piero Graglia, professor of history of international relations at the University of Milan, told Euroverify that Tajani's interpretation of the flag is 'incorrect'. The number of stars, 12, was chosen because it represents 'perfection' and for its broader symbolic meaning in European culture, he explained, adding that the number carries symbolism in ancient Greek philosophy, mathematics, as well as mythology. 'The Council of Europe, when it adopted the flag, said that the blue is a symbol of the Western sky at sunset, and the twelve stars represent perfection. This is the only acceptable interpretation,' he explained. The European Union's official website describes the circle of 12 gold stars on a blue background as standing for the 'ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe". There is no reference to religious symbolism. Yet, despite the Council of Europe saying it had discarded flag proposals because of their religious overtones in the 1950s, the institution does make an implicit reference to religious analogies in its description of the flag on its website. It describes the number of stars, 12, as recalling 'the apostles, the sons of Jacob, the labours of Hercules, and the months of the year". The sons of Jacob, who was the third of the three patriarchs of the Jewish people, are also known as the twelve tribes of Israel, which Tajani refers to in his statement on X. Designer Heitz cited religious inspiration While the flag itself is considered secular, its designer, Arsène Heitz, did cite religious inspiration. According to Professor Graglia, it is known that a statue of the Virgin Mary in the cathedral of Strasbourg, where Heitz lived and worked, inspired his design. It bears a clear resemblance to the flag. A 2004 article in the Economist also attributes a statement to Heitz in which he said he was inspired by a biblical verse from the Apocalypse of John, which refers to a "woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars".
