President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday also extended her greetings on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
"On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. This day symbolises the extraordinary valour, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the nation will forever inspire its citizens," the President posted on X.
On Friday, families of army personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War of 1999 gathered at Lamochen Viewpoint in Drass to pay heartfelt tributes to the heroes of the war.
The solemn event, organised to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces, saw emotional recollections from family members of fallen soldiers.
Rajesh, the brother of a soldier who lost his life at Tiger Hill, recounted the poignant memories left behind in his brother's diary.
"My brother lost his life while serving the nation in the line of action at Tiger Hill. When we got news about the war, we wrote a letter to him, but he told us he wasn't involved in the action. After reading his diary, we learned he was in the war and lied to keep us from worrying. He wrote that he felt he wouldn't come down the hill and handed his diary to a friend before going up," Rajesh said.
Surekha Shinde, another family member, shared her pride and gratitude while honouring her brother, who served for five years before the Kargil War."My brother had been in service for five years before the war started. I feel proud coming to this place, and I thank the army for this invitation," she said.
The gathering at Lamochen Viewpoint served as a poignant reminder of the courage and selflessness displayed by Indian soldiers during the Kargil conflict.
Every year on July 26, India commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day etched in the nation's heart with pride and solemn remembrance. It marks the day in 1999 when India successfully concluded Operation Vijay, reclaiming the strategic heights from Pakistani intruders.
The Kargil War is a saga of strong political, military and diplomatic actions. This War will always be remembered for its strategic and tactical surprises, as well as the self-imposed national strategy of restraint in keeping the war limited to the Kargil-Siachen sectors and the swiftly executed tri-services military strategy.
The Kargil War lasted for more than 60 days and concluded on July 26, 1999, with a gallant victory for India. Indian armed forces successfully reclaimed the command of the high outposts that were treacherously occupied by Pakistani soldiers during the winter months.
According to IAF, Operation Safed Sagar, the Indian Air Force's codename for its air operations during the 1999 Kargil War, was a trailblazer in many ways and proved that air power could decisively alter the course of battle without crossing international boundaries.
The operation was launched on May 26, 1999, marking the first large-scale use of air power in Kashmir since 1971 and demonstrating the effectiveness of limited air asset use in a localised conflict.

Chennai: The Ambassador of Peru to India, Javier Manuel Paulinich Velarde, expressed his optimism about concluding negotiations related to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Peru by the end of 2025, or at the latest by early 2026. Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of Peru's 204th Independence Day celebration in Chennai on Monday, Ambassador Velarde expressed his excitement over the event while highlighting the investment opportunities in the South American nation. "I'm very enthusiastic because this is the first time that we celebrate our national day in Chennai. We expect to continue in the near future... This is an opportunity to show about how is Peru, which products we can trade in the future and inform about some activity like the negotiation of a free trade agreement between India and Peru," he said. "We would like to finish a free trade agreement negotiation as soon as possible, perhaps at the end of this year or in any case at the beginning of next one... The idea is to reduce customs duties on several products and promote investment from India to Peru and from Peru to India," he added. The Ambassador highlighted recent diplomatic efforts between India and Peru, noting a visit by Peru's Foreign Ministry to India in March and an invitation extended to External Affairs Minister Jaishankar to visit Lima later this year. "We have a good relationship. In March this year, the Foreign Ministry of Peru came to India. We invite Mr Jaishankar to Lima; I think he's planning to go at the end of the year," he stated. The event was hosted by the Honorary Consul of Peru in Chennai R Dinesh and the Chairman of TVS Supply Chain Solutions, and underscored the growing economic and cultural ties between the two nations. Dinesh emphasised the potential synergies between India and Peru, noting the rich mineral resources available in Peru and the various benefits that the South American country can derive from India's vast manufacturing sector. "Considering the rich mineral resources available in Peru and the various benefits that the manufacturing sector, which is a strong presence in Tamil Nadu, has, we are very happy that the government is also supporting this endeavour to make sure we have further expansion of the opportunities," he stated. "The Indian government is actually negotiating a free trade agreement, as you have heard the Commerce Minister mention. That's something from the industry we are very much looking forward to, and from South America. Peru is one of the very stable economies and therefore has both sourcing of earth and other minerals, and also other opportunities that we see for trade. So the Indian government is looking at this in a very positive manner, and we are very delighted with that," Dinesh added. Tamil Nadu IT Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan also attended the event as the Chief Guest. The celebration also included a special session titled "India-Peru: Business and Beyond," which explored economic cooperation, investment opportunities, and cultural exchange. "We are celebrating the 204th Independence Day of Peru, but I think the idea was to actually introduce the opportunities and cultural integration between Tamil Nadu and Peru. New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the United Kingdom has given a significant boost to India-UK relations, with Acting UK High Commissioner to India Christina Scott highlighting key advancements in the strategic partnership, including progress on the India-UK 2035 Vision and a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA). "We were absolutely delighted that Prime Minister Modi took the decision to come to the UK and make time in his very busy schedule," Scott told ANI, describing the visit as "a real warm meeting" that showcased strong mutual engagement. During the visit, PM Modi held comprehensive discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, senior ministers, covering key areas such as trade, environment, defense, and security. He also met with His Majesty King Charles III. "The commitment to bring the UK and India to the next level of partnership was evident," Scott said, highlighting the positive outcomes and shared optimism for future collaboration. The India-UK 2035 Vision, a 10-year strategic roadmap, was highlighted as a cornerstone of the partnership. "It's publicly available, and I'd encourage people to take a look," Scott urged. Nimisha's death sentence overturned, says Indian Grand Mufti Muslaiyar's office
New Delhi: The death sentence for Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse who was convicted of murder in Yemen, has been "overturned" and "completely" cancelled, the office of Indian Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram AP Abubakker Musliyar, stated on Monday. According to a statement issued by the Grand Mufti's office, the decision was made after a high-level meeting held in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, where it was decided to completely cancel the death sentence, which had been temporarily suspended earlier. "The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was previously suspended, has been overturned. A high-level meeting held in Sanaa decided to completely cancel the death sentence that was temporarily suspended earlier," the statement read. Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old Indian nurse from Kerala, was scheduled to be executed on July 16, after she was convicted of killing a Yemeni national in June 2018, a decision that was upheld by the country's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. However, her execution was postponed, following "concerted efforts" by the Government of India. Earlier on July 17, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that it was actively working to support Nimisha Priya and was extending all possible assistance in the case. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a press briefing, stated that the MEA had appointed a lawyer to assist Priya's family in navigating the complex legal process in Yemen. This includes exploring options for clemency or pardon under Sharia law. Nimisha Priya is a trained nurse and has worked in private hospitals in Yemen for a few years. Her husband and minor daughter returned to India in 2014 because of financial reasons, and in that same year, Yemen was gripped by civil war, and they could not go back as the country stopped issuing new visas. Later in 2015, Nimisha joined hands with a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to set up her clinic in Sanaa. She sought Mahdi's support because, under Yemen's law, only nationals are allowed to set up clinics and business firms. In 2015, Mahdi accompanied Nimisha Priya to Kerala when she came for a month-long holiday. During the visit, he stole a wedding photograph of Nimisha, which he later manipulated to claim that he was married to her. A plea made by the mother of Nimisha Priya had stated, "After a while, Nimisha's clinic began, Mahdi manipulated the ownership documents of the clinic. He also began to take money out of her monthly earnings after telling everyone that Nimisha was his wife. Nimisha had alleged that Mahdi had been harassing her and her family for years. Mahdi also seized her passport. This was done to ensure that she would not leave Yemen. He tortured her under the influence of drugs. He threatened her at gunpoint several times. He took all the money from the clinic and her ornaments." The plea further alleged that, unable to cope with the torture, Nimisha complained to the police in Sanaa, but instead of taking action against Mahdi, the police arrested her and put her in jail for six days. It was further alleged that on her return from jail, the severity of the torture increased manifold. In July 2017, Nimisha took the help of a warden of a jail located near her clinic. The warden suggested that she should try to sedate him and then convince him to give her the passport. However, sedation did not affect Mahdi, who was a substance abuser. She tried sedating him again, using a stronger sedative in order to retrieve her passport, but he died within a few minutes due to a drug overdose.
