Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima has always wanted to make a film, but Guillermo del Toro told him not to
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's no secret that Hideo Kojima is a cinephile. He constantly posts his thoughts about the latest films over on social media, Metal Gear Solid cutscenes are sometimes infamous for how long and indulgent they can be, and the cast list of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is stuffed with notable Hollywood names. But the famed game director was apparently convinced to not pursue filmmaking by none other than Guillermo del Toro. Kojima said as much in the latest issue of Edge Magazine - out now - where he recalled a chat he had with Nicolas Winding Refn (director of Drive and an actor in Death Stranding 2) and Guillermo del Toro (renowned for classics like Shape of Water and Pan's Labyrinth, and, also, Heartman in Death Stranding.) "I am reevaluating my priorities about what I should do," Kojima told Edge, recalling that the meeting he had with the two filmmakers turned into a talk "about how much time we have left to create" in life. "I have always harboured an ambition to direct a film, and falling ill made me think: if I wanted to make a film, I would have to do so in my 60s, which will be so physically tough to do." That's when del Toro apparently told Kojima to rethink his film ambitions. "'You don't have to do live action films. What you're doing now [in games] is like a live-action film. Don't do this old-media thing of going into filmmaking – just do what you've been doing.'" "But I'm always thinking about the next ten years," Kojima added. "Because this is comparatively a small company, unlike other corporations in this industry like Sega or Nintendo, I must tell the staff where we are headed in the next ten years." Kojima will at least partially be involved in A24's upcoming Death Stranding film, and his odd horror game OD also has a stacked list of Hollywood collaborators, including Jordan Peele, so I wouldn't feel too sorry for the guy. Hideo Kojima doesn't want more than 150 people working on games like Death Stranding 2 thanks to a sheep herding tip from Mad Max director George Miller

Food Network star Guy Fieri loves Florida but sold one of his homes in Palm Beach County
Florida is a favorite of celebrity chef Guy Fieri with dozens of restaurants statewide featured on his Food Network show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." But does Palm Beach County hold a special place in the spikey blonde's heart over other Sunshine State locations? Maybe. In 2022, the Mayor of Flavortown donated donated $20,000 to Lake Worth Community High School's culinary academy. More recently, Fieri fed Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office employees from his new East Coast Disaster Relief Trailer in April. And in November his foundation joined Rocco's Tacos & Tequila Bar in Boca Raton to raise money for hospitality workers affected by 2024 hurricanes. Fieri has also bought and sold real estate in two Palm Beach County cities, including a sale this year of a waterfront home in Lake Worth Beach. Guy Fieri, whose birth name is Guy Ramsay Ferry, bought a waterfront home in March 2021 for a recorded $3.9 million in Lake Worth Beach, which is just south of West Palm Beach. The 7,400-square-foot home is in an exclusive seven-home gated community where one of his neighbors was Olympia Bishop, sister to actress Brook Shields. Two years after the purchase in Lake Worth Beach, Fieri bought a second home on Singer Island in Riviera Beach. The $7.3 million Mediterranean-style house is on a coveted corner lot on Singer Island in Riviera Beach less than 2 miles from the Lake Worth Inlet, also called the Palm Beach Inlet. The buyer in official Palm Beach County records on both homes was a limited liability company called Gus Ritchie 1 — a possible play on the names Gus Ferrari and Guy Ritchie, which Fieri has said fans have called him by mistake. More: Flavortown returns: Guy Fieri's 'DDD' Food Network series features 4 Palm Beach County restaurants Fieri put his Lake Worth Beach home on the market in September 2023. The list price for the 6,000-square-foot home was $8.75 million. That price was slashed several times before it sold in January for $7 million. While that's nearly double what Fieri paid for the home, it's $1.75 million less than what he hoped to get for it. The price drop wasn't unusual as the housing market has cooled from its rocket ship ascent during the pandemic. About 28% of Palm Beach County single-family homes were forced to drop prices in January 2025, according to the online brokerage firm Redfin. That increased to 30% in April.. The buyers of the 24-year-old house were Las Vegas restauranteurs Frank Bonanno and his wife, Betty Pellegrino Bonanno, according to Palm Beach County official records. Frank Bonanno is president of Fifth Avenue Restaurant Group. His first forays into the culinary industry included the 1976 creation of the Famous Chocolate Chip Cookie Co., which eventually was sold to the Mrs. Fields cookie empire. Fifth Avenue operates more than 40 restaurants in the Las Vegas area, according to its website. Fieri still owns the property he purchased on Singer Island in Riviera Beach. The nearly 10,000-square-foot waterfront property has room for a 100-foot-yacht. The Singer Island home is not in a gated community but is located on the dead-end street Coral Way. It has 230 feet of water frontage on the Intracoastal Waterway and a canal. Built in 2008, it has a total of 9,870 square feet with 6,620 under air conditioning. There is a three-car garage, a large pool, summer kitchen, five bedrooms, hand-carved coral stone fireplaces and pecky cypress ceilings. More: Sneak peek inside Guy Fieri's new waterfront home on Singer Island near West Palm Beach Whether Fieri kept the furniture, which included a smothering of leather and heavy dark wood pieces, is unknown but sources familiar with the sale said at the time that the chef visited the home more than once and would likely undertake a hefty remodel. Prior to Fieri buying the home in 2023 for $7.3 million, it had last sold in June 2022 for $7.9 million. The property is not homesteaded, which is a designation that caps property tax increases if the owner registers the home as their primary residence. It's unknown if Guy Fieri plans to move to Florida permanently. He told the Bradenton Herald in 2021 that his family would stay in Northern California at least until his youngest son Ryder finishes high school. Ryder Fieri graduated high school in 2024. Guy Fieri and his wife Lori moved Ryder into his dormitory at San Diego State University in August of that year, according to People. Fieri's older son, Hunter Fieri, graduated with a master's degree in business administration from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Liquid Death takes aim at prebiotic sodas with some toilet humor
Liquid Death has taken the old-timey Pepsi Challenge taste test concept to some pretty strange places for its flavored sparkling waters. Back in 2022, it pitted its $1.99 cans of Liquid Death against tallboys of luxury liquids like lobster béarnaise sauce ($50), liquified Japanese wagyu cheeseburger ($51), Spanish squid ink ($58), and beluga caviar ($580). Cue the dry heaves. And in 2023, it responded to a tweet that said, 'I'd rather lick sweat off a fat guy's back than drink Liquid Death,' with a spot entitled—you guessed it —' Better Than Back Sweat? ' Now the brand is taking aim at prebiotic sodas like Olipop with a new taste test ad called 'Toilet Taste Test.' Here we have several brave members of the public coming to test the chuggability of a Liquid Death flavored sparkling water against a mug of unnamed prebiotic soda. Each subject tastes the Liquid Death first, then is asked to try the prebiotic soda while sitting on the toilet since it claims the prebiotic soda contains six times the fiber in a fiber-based laxative. Subject responses are . . . revealing. 'Not quite prairie-dogging but feeling some motion.' 'Number 2 might make me number two.' Watch the (soda) throne The prebiotic soda market has been forecasted to hit $3.5 billion by 2032. In February, Coca-Cola launched Simply Pop, and a month later PepsiCo acquired Poppi for $1.95 billion. Popular brand Olipop (which contains 6 g of fiber per can) was valued at $1.85 billion in February, after raising $50 million in its latest funding round. Liquid Death was valued at $1.4 billion, following its latest funding round last March. According to the company, 2024 retail sales were $333 million, up from $263 million in 2023. While it's not the most obvious competitor to the heavy metal and comedy-infused canned water brand, Liquid Death has always positioned itself as a healthy alternative to traditional sugar-filled soda. 'The Toilet Taste Test' is a clear indication of what brands it deems a threat to its own growth trajectory. By taking aim at the taste and consequences of fiber, the brand not only found the funny, but also took a direct hit on what many see as prebiotic soda's Achilles heel. It's also a perfect example of the brand's consistently funny take on advertising. At the Fast Company Grill at SXSW in March, Liquid Death's senior VP of marketing Dan Murphy told me the goal for all of its content was to make sure it 'doesn't smell like an ad' and creates engagement with consumers and the media. 'The metrics you should look for are saves and shares,' Murphy said. 'If somebody's going to go back and watch that again, if somebody's sharing that with a friend, there's that viral coefficient that is telling you you're doing it right.'
