Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima has always wanted to make a film, but Guillermo del Toro told him not to
It's no secret that Hideo Kojima is a cinephile. He constantly posts his thoughts about the latest films over on social media, Metal Gear Solid cutscenes are sometimes infamous for how long and indulgent they can be, and the cast list of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is stuffed with notable Hollywood names. But the famed game director was apparently convinced to not pursue filmmaking by none other than Guillermo del Toro.
Kojima said as much in the latest issue of Edge Magazine - out now - where he recalled a chat he had with Nicolas Winding Refn (director of Drive and an actor in Death Stranding 2) and Guillermo del Toro (renowned for classics like Shape of Water and Pan's Labyrinth, and, also, Heartman in Death Stranding.)
"I am reevaluating my priorities about what I should do," Kojima told Edge, recalling that the meeting he had with the two filmmakers turned into a talk "about how much time we have left to create" in life. "I have always harboured an ambition to direct a film, and falling ill made me think: if I wanted to make a film, I would have to do so in my 60s, which will be so physically tough to do."
That's when del Toro apparently told Kojima to rethink his film ambitions. "'You don't have to do live action films. What you're doing now [in games] is like a live-action film. Don't do this old-media thing of going into filmmaking – just do what you've been doing.'"
"But I'm always thinking about the next ten years," Kojima added. "Because this is comparatively a small company, unlike other corporations in this industry like Sega or Nintendo, I must tell the staff where we are headed in the next ten years."
Kojima will at least partially be involved in A24's upcoming Death Stranding film, and his odd horror game OD also has a stacked list of Hollywood collaborators, including Jordan Peele, so I wouldn't feel too sorry for the guy.

Bruce Dickinson reveals 2027 solo album plans, says Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris loves it

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson hopes to release his next solo album in 2027 – and bassist Steve Harris already loves the new material. Talking exclusively to Metal Hammer, Dickinson, who released his latest solo album The Mandrake Project in 2024, reveals that solo LP number eight will be out in two years' time, after Maiden have played their as-yet-unannounced live dates in 2026. The vocalist tells us: 'We've got, like, 18 tracks demoed, which I did in April. We're going to do a new album – not for next year, obviously. We're busy next year with other things, obviously Maiden things and everything, which is great, but '27 that's when it will come out.' The singer goes on to describe what we can expect from his next release, teasing 'bone-crushingly heavy' songs as well as moments that 'are just like tugging at the heartstrings'. 'If it's heavy, it's heavy,' he adds, 'but if it just happens to be acoustic, it's acoustic. That's the deal, you know? 'It's whatever the song dictates, whatever the story is you're trying to tell, but it's really exciting. I'm so stoked about these tracks. I played the demos to a few people in the record label and stuff, and everybody is like, 'Wow!'' Another fan of the upcoming music is Harris, who founded Maiden in 1975 and has served as the band's de facto leader and primary songwriter ever since. According to Dickinson, the bassist just so happened to overhear some of the new stuff, catching it as the singer played it for some of Maiden's team in the next room over. 'I was playing the demos to the team, the management, because I've got it on a little tablet,' Dickinson remembers. 'So I said, 'You want to hear some new stuff?' 'I didn't realise Steve was having his physio in the room next door. And he came out and he went, 'Is that your new stuff?' I went, 'Yeah.' He goes, 'That's the best stuff you've ever done. That's the best stuff I've ever heard from you!' I went, 'Well, thank you very much, boss!'' The three-year wait for new Dickinson music will be nothing compared to the gestation period for The Mandrake Project, which was released 19 years after its predecessor Tyranny Of Souls. The singer explained the wait during an interview with Classic Rock. 'It's been on the boil since 2014,' he said. 'Then I got diagnosed with throat cancer [in late 2014], then we had fucking Covid, so there were two years when I couldn't go to the USA. So by the time I reconvened with [guitarist and producer] Roy Z, everything had moved on.' Last week, Dickinson reissued his second solo album Balls To Picasso, originally released in 1994, with the new title More Balls To Picasso. The reissue features remixed overhauls of the original recordings, as well as live-in-the-studio takes of the songs God Of War and Shoot All The Clowns. Listen below. Meanwhile, Maiden recently wrapped up the European leg of their 50th-anniversary tour, Run For Your Lives. Avengers: Doomsday's 'leaked' X-Men design for Nightcrawler is actually just fan art

We'll have to wait a bit longer to see the X-Men design for Avengers: Doomsday, because it turns out that a previously 'leaked' image is just fanart. The original artwork was shared by Alan Cumming himself, who plays Nightcrawler and is returning for the next Avengers movie. It appeared to show a picture of his character in costume, but, as one person has debunked on Twitter, the image is actually an edit made by a fan and shared online last year. "Actually, what's great about it, it was four-and-a-half to five hours before, and now it was 90 minutes," Cumming has previously said of his Nightcrawler look. "Before, all the tattoos were done by hand because they hadn't decided on them before we started filming and now there are all these little things that stick on – it's a game changer." Cumming isn't the only X-Men actor returning for Avengers: Doomsday, either. He'll be joined by Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, as revealed in that bumper sized casting announcement. "[I'm] not quite sure [if Mystique's scenes have all been filmed]. They haven't finished writing it." Romijn said back in July. "They keep everything close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps." That tracks with what Kevin Feige has said about the movie, too: "There's plus-ing happening every day on the Avengers: Doomsday set right now, and it is amazing to watch because what those filmmakers, those actors, both the ones that are playing these characters for the first or second time and the one playing them for the 10th or 12th time, are the best in the world at it, and know these characters so well."
