'Farcical': NRL fans make same complaint about referees as Panthers roll Tigers

Yahoo27-07-2025
Angry NRL fans have slammed the inconsistency of referees after a seventh-straight win for Penrith that keeps their incredible top-four charge alive. The Panthers thumped the Tigers 36-2 on Saturday evening to surge into fifth spot on the table, but it came after viewers all made similar complaints about the unpopular move from officials to penalise teams for incorrect play-the-balls.
The Tigers started the match brightly and led 2-0 after an early penalty goal from right in front. But things soon unravelled for Benji Marshall's side, who were guilty of gifting the four-time defending premiers field position with a series of six-again restarts.
Referee Peter Gough also pinged the Tigers for a 'roll-ball' after they failed to play the ball correctly and it helped give the Panthers the impetus as they scored three quick tries to establish a 16-point lead by halftime. The officials have made it clear that they will penalise players for not making a genuine attempt to rake the ball back with their foot in play-the-balls.
But as many viewers pointed out, several Panthers players appeared to do the same thing as the Tigers, without being penalised for it. Tries for Lindsay Smith, Casey McLean and Dylan Edwards set up Penrith's big lead at the break but there was a widespread belief from viewers across social media that the lead-up to many of the Panthers' tries included numerous 'roll-balls' that went unpunished from the officials.
Quick play-the-balls have become a much bigger factor in the NRL since the introduction of six-again restarts and Penrith are one of the best teams in the comp in that regard. But the reality is that players from every side seem to be getting away with incorrect play-the-balls and the decision-making process from referees around which ones to penalise has been labelled 'farcical' by many fans.
These roll ball calls are a farce! #nrlpantherstigers

Taking 4 months off the stupid roll ball penalties and bringing them back in round 21 is farcical #NRLPanthersTigers

Tigers get penalised for not playing the ball with their foot. The ENTIRE next set of 6 from the Panthers, not one foot touched a played ball. All rolled. This is the bullshit that the fans hate. The gross inconsistencies & subjective rules. @NRL#NRLPanthersTigers

Panthers just scored their second try from a straight up roll ball… the inconsistency is a joke #nrlpantherstigers
— ShireTiger (@ShireTiger) July 26, 2025
Just watched the Tigers get pinged for a roll ball, 25m from their own line. Foot made the movement, missed it by an inch. I figured I'd watch the Panthers next set… they had two, a late six again… and not a single foot touched a ball. Not one. Then they scored.

Panthers close in on top-four with seventh-straight win
Despite the backlash against the officials, the Tigers were ultimately outclassed by Ivan Cleary's Panthers, who took another giant step towards finishing the season in the top four. The fourth-placed Warriors' slip-up against the lowly Titans has given Penrith fresh hope and Brisbane's loss against the Eels allowed the defending champs to leapfrog the Broncos into fifth.
Penrith will need the Warriors to lose at least twice on the run home to snatch fourth spot but Penrith's red-hot form and return to their premiership-winning defence gives them a massive chance. The situation is a far cry from a 1-5 start to the season from Penrith, who sat dead-last just two months ago, before their stunning winning streak started.
"I'll be happy to make the top eight, really," Penrith coach Cleary said after the Tigers game. "I'm very proud of the boys, the whole club really, the way we've just sort of hung in there and essentially just trusted what we do.
Penrith fullback Edwards was a standout after running for a game-high 322 metres, while also chiming in with a try and try assist. Nathan Cleary was also in imperious form with three try assists - one of which appeared to include a forward pass in the build-up though. Cleary kicked a perfect six-from-six with the boot too, with the champion Penrith halfback controlling the game superbly to all but end the Tigers' hopes of playing finals footy.
"I thought we got taught a lesson on game management, field position, kicking game and choking - we got strangled to death by them tonight," Tigers coach Benji Marshall said after the 34-point belting. "They were outstanding."

Nothing I can do to bulletproof myself: Hayden Young

Star Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young concedes he will be at a higher risk of injury when he returns from his adductor niggle in time for the club's finals campaign. Young, playing just his third match back from hamstring surgery, tweaked his groin while laying a tackle in Fremantle's 27-point win over Carlton on Sunday. No concrete timeline has been set for Young's return but it's believed he will miss at least two weeks, giving him a chance to return for Fremantle's final-round clash with the Bulldogs. Hayden Young has been subbed out of the game with a groin injury, replaced by Neil Erasmus.#AFLFreoBlues — AFL (@AFL) August 3, 2025 If the Dockers take a conservative approach, Young will return for the first week of the finals, giving him a month to recover. Young's two hamstring tears this year means he has tallied just seven AFL games for the campaign - on the back of a compromised pre-season preparation. The 24-year-old is well aware his lack of foundation will leave him somewhat vulnerable when he makes his playing return in the coming weeks. "The reality is, when you don't have a full pre-season and you don't have continuity in your body, you're at a higher risk of injury," Young told 96FM. "That's something I've got to manage going forward. "When I go back out on the field, I don't have the amount of work in my body the rest of the boys have. "I've got to prepare really well to prevent these things from happening. "There's no little fix or something I can do in the next two weeks to bulletproof my body. "I have to prepare the best I can, have faith in the medical staff, and hope my body holds up." Young is so important to Fremantle's midfield set-up that Essendon great Matthew Lloyd went as far as declaring the Dockers won't be able to win the flag without the skilful on-baller. Fremantle (14-6) have won 10 of their past 11 games to be right in the hunt for a prized top-four berth, and they'll start as hot favourites in Saturday night's clash with struggling Port Adelaide (8-12) at Adelaide Oval. The Dockers then round out their home-and-away campaign with games against Brisbane (home) and the Bulldogs (away).

Kevin Walters drops shock bolter for Aussie side as Latrell Mitchell in timely return

New Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has dropped the first potential name who could be a surprise inclusion in his 22-man Ashes squad with NRL finals footy around the corner. Walters is already starting to break down certain selections for his Australian side that will take on England in the historic Ashes tour that gets underway at London's Wembley Stadium on October 25. Walters is waiting to find out to see if Payne Haas, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow are reportedly switching allegiances to Samoa after the NRL season. The new coach said he won't be selecting anyone who doesn't want to wear the green and gold for the squad as he looks to restore pride back into the jersey. And Walters has revealed he has his eye on Canberra five-eighth Ethan Strange after a stellar season so far. The Raiders playmaker has helped lead the team to top of the table through 22 rounds and has patrolled the left-side of the field for Ricky Stuart's team. Strange has long been tipped as a future State of Origin star, but it appears he might even get to tour England with the Australian squad sooner rather than later. Strange still lacks experience in the big games having never played finals footy. The Raiders are currently leading the ladder in 2025 and Strange will have a chance to prove why he is so highly-rated come finals time. And Walters is watching on eagerly having suggested a lot of his decisions could come down to how players, like Strange, perform under pressure. 'Finals football is tough because it's the next level,' Walters said on SEN Radio. 'The deeper you go, the more pressure there is on players and coaches. It exposes players to a good environment to test themselves and when we get to Wembley Stadium where there will be 60, 70 or even 80,000 people. We know how vocal English fans can be and how hostile an environment it is. "The current halves that we have from NSW and Queensland are elite and they are all available. (Strange) is certainly a player that could force themselves into the touring party. A young player like Strange coming through and having a terrific finals series. That could project him into a 22-man party.' Walters admitted one of his first jobs will be to get in front of the trio who are reportedly tossing up playing for Samoa, and figuring out if they are up for selection. One player he should be able to select is Latrell Mitchell after Wayne Bennett named the South Sydney Rabbitohs fullback in his latest squad. Latrell Mitchell nears Rabbitohs return Mitchell could be back earlier than expected this season after going down injured after Origin. Mitchell has missed the last five weeks with a quad injury, and wasn't expected back until Round 23 at the earliest. But the superstar fullback was named on the extended bench for the Rabbitohs' clash with the Titans in Round 22. Named in jersey 22, it means Mitchell could be a late inclusion in what would be a boost to Bennett's quest to avoid a first-ever wooden spoon. The late inclusion of Mitchell could see Jye Gray shift to the halves from fullback, although Mitchell could be utilised in the centres to replace Tallis Duncan. Depending on when Mitchell returns, Walters could have up to four games to get a glimpse of the South Sydney star's form before selecting his squad. Mitchell would be a huge inclusion for the Kangaroos having played all three State of Origin games for NSW in 2025 at centre.

'Good clubs don't wait': Gawn reflects on Goodwin axing

Melbourne captain Max Gawn said he was shocked but not angry at the sacking of coach Simon Goodwin, and he's urged prospective suitors to take the call from the Demons. Goodwin, who led Melbourne to the 2021 flag, was axed on Tuesday despite having a contract that ran until the end of 2026. Melbourne (7-13) sit 12th on the ladder, with the club's board believing the team needs a new voice to help steer them towards the finals again. Simon signing off ❤️💙Final Presser 📝 | — Melbourne Demons (@melbournefc) August 5, 2025 Demons wingman Ed Langdon made it clear on Wednesday that he didn't agree with the board's opinion. Gawn was more diplomatic during his Triple M radio slot on Thursday, toeing a fine line between expressing his love for Goodwin and respecting the "ballsy" decision from the club's board. "I was shocked, as most people were. They didn't see it coming," said Gawn, who revealed he was "down in the dumps" upon hearing the news. "I'm definitely not angry. "I'm a lover of the Melbourne football club, and in the end I'm going to support most decisions they make, and this is another one I'm going to get behind. "They've sacked people who I've loved before, and I've moved on, and so have they. "This one is a harder one to take ... but I also have great relationships with people who made the decision, and they've explained it carefully to me as to why." When asked whether the Demons needed a new voice, Gawn joked: "Ed Langdon butchered this one yesterday." "Do we need a new voice? Look, I appreciate after nine years a new voice could help," Gawn added. "I was pretty bullish on what we were building at the football club and the old voice was doing well for me. "But we were also 6-13, and good clubs don't wait. It's natural to be scared of change. I'm scared of change. "I've got a lot of relationships in that building that I hope they all keep their jobs. But change sometimes is necessary." Nathan Buckley, John Longmire, Adam Simpson and Ken Hinkley are among the experienced names floated to replace Goodwin, with former Essendon coach James Hird believed to have ruled himself out. "I feel like it's a call you should take," Gawn said in a message to anyone who is considering applying for the role. Troy Chaplin has been appointed interim coach for the rest of the season, starting with Sunday's clash with the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.
