Here Are the Top-Performing Stocks From the S&P 500 This Year

Globe and Mail6 days ago

The stock market has been one heck of a seesaw in 2025.
A bit over a month ago, the S&P 500 was down more than 15% on the year and narrowly avoided an official bear market (in fact, it closed down 19% from its highs and touched bear territory intraday). The Nasdaq officially entered one.
By mid-May, the S&P 500 soared back into the green for 2025. It was the fastest recovery in over 40 years, with the index erasing its 15% year-to-date loss in less than six weeks. It's a good reminder that one of the worst mistakes we can make is to panic sell during times of market stress.
The market is now telling us two things. First, it's to expect a quicker-than-anticipated resolution to the tariff issues and trade wars. And alongside that, the assumption is that inflation remains under control, which will allow the Fed to resume the rate-cutting process. This should provide a further tailwind to equity prices.
An underlying downward trend in inflation combined with better-than-expected corporate earnings also helped propel the S&P 500 back near record highs.
Sector Rotation Evident as Technology Rebounds
There's no doubt that a strong 2024 was met with heavy selling early this year. Markets came under pressure as volatility increased amid uncertainty surrounding President Trump's tariffs.
We also saw defensive sectors take the lead as market participants altered positioning. Even after this latest rally, two of the top three S&P sectors this year include utilities and consumer staples. These are two sectors we'd expect to hold up relatively well during corrections and bear markets.
But things have quickly changed course with the technology sector roaring back. Unique catalysts such as the artificial intelligence theme resulted in the more aggressive pockets of the market returning to the forefront. The information technology sector is the leading sector over the past month; this is aligned with the secular bull thesis, as we'd expect tech stocks to outperform in a bull market.
The media-hyped concentration risk at the very top of the cap-weighted S&P 500 would have us believe that investors are becoming increasingly reliant on a smaller number of companies to lead their portfolios. Yet none of the top 25 S&P 500 constituents (by index weight) are included in the best 3 performers in 2025.
The evidence is now pointing to the notion that this correction in the S&P 500 has come to an abrupt end. Let's take a look at the top three performers so far this year from the blue-chip index.
S&P 500 Gold: NRG Energy
An integrated power company operating in the United States, NRG Energy NRG is leading the pack in 2025. Renewed strength in rate-sensitive utilities provides a durable backing for this industry leader.
NRG Energy is involved in producing and selling electricity and related services to residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers. The company generates electricity using natural gas, coal, oil, solar, nuclear, and battery storage.
NRG stock is displaying relative strength, recently surging to 52-week highs. Shares have already advanced more than 70% this year:
The utility provider has put together an impressive earnings history, surpassing earnings estimates in three of the last four quarters. Just a few weeks ago, the company reported first-quarter earnings of $2.62/share, a 45.6% surprise over the $1.80/share consensus estimate.
NRG shares received a boost as analysts covering the company have been increasing their earnings estimates lately. For the full year, earnings estimates have risen 0.82% in the past 60 days. The 2025 Zacks Consensus EPS Estimate now stands at $7.34 per share, reflecting a potential growth rate of 10.5% relative to the prior year.
S&P 500 Silver: Palantir
A leading provider of artificial intelligence systems, Palantir PLTR took the top spot in 2024 (after being added to the S&P 500 in September) and has followed through this year. The company has benefitted from numerous strategic partnerships, including a recent collaboration with Bain & Company to integrate advanced AI solutions to diverse industries.
Last year, Palantir announced that it extended its long-standing partnership with the U.S. Army, further aiding the delivery of its Army Vantage capability used to perform essential missions and enable quicker decision-making.
The intelligence software and data analytics provider generates more than 50% of its revenue from government agencies. Late last year, the federal government issued the company a higher rating for secure cloud computing services, which should accelerate the handling of extremely sensitive data as part of Palantir's cloud offering.
Following the latest correction, PLTR shares have climbed back to 52-week highs and are up more than 60% in 2025:
Analysts covering PLTR remain bullish and have increased their second-quarter EPS estimates by 7.69% in the past 60 days. The Q2 Zacks Consensus Estimate now stands at 14 cents per share, reflecting a 55.6% potential growth rate versus the year-ago period.
S&P 500 Bronze: Howmet Aerospace
Rounding out the top 3 in terms of S&P 500 returns so far this year is defense giant Howmet Aerospace HWM. The company is a global provider of advanced engineered solutions for the aerospace and transportation industries.
A Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), Howmet stock has been a steady performer, surging more than 50% year-to-date:
Howmet has built an incredible track record in terms of surpassing earnings estimates; the company hasn't missed the EPS mark since 2020. The aerospace and defense leader delivered a trailing four-quarter average earnings surprise of 8.9%.
Howmet continues to witness rising earnings estimates as the company benefits from momentum in the commercial aerospace market. Analysts covering HWM increased their full-year EPS estimates by 6.13% in the past 60 days. The 2025 Zacks Consensus Estimate now stands at $3.46/share, translating to a healthy 28.6% growth rate versus last year.
Final Thoughts
These three market leaders are showing strong growth metrics and are poised to continue their outperformance.
While defensive stocks led the charge in the first few months of 2025, other sectors like technology have resumed the driver's seat and are playing a big part in the S&P 500's resurgence. The bulls are hoping that this V-shaped recovery will be followed by more strength in the months to come.

Trump says Putin told him that Russia will respond to Ukrainian attack on airfields

Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a cabinet meeting via videoconference at Novo-Ogaryovo state residence outside of Moscow, Russia, Wednesday, June 4, 2025. (Gavriil Grigorov, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP) WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him 'very strongly' in a phone call Wednesday that he will respond to Ukraine's weekend drone attack on Russian airfields. The U.S. president said in a social media post that, 'It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace.' The call that lasted for an hour and 15 minutes was Trump's first known with Putin since May 19. Trump said he and Putin also discussed Iran's nuclear program. By Hanna Arhirova And Michelle L. Price THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP's earlier story follows below. KYIV, Ukraine -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday dismissed Russia's ceasefire proposal as 'an ultimatum' and renewed his call for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to break the deadlock over the war, which has dragged on for nearly three and a half years. Putin, however, showed no willingness to meet with Zelenskyy, expressing anger Wednesday about what he said were Ukraine's recent 'terrorist acts' on Russian rail lines in the Kursk and Bryansk regions on the countries' border. 'How can any such (summit) meetings be conducted in such circumstances? What shall we talk about?' Putin asked in a video call with top Russian officials. He accused Ukraine of seeking a truce only to replenish its stockpiles of western arms, recruit more soldiers and prepare new attacks like those in Kursk and Bryansk. Both sides exchanged memorandums setting out their conditions for a ceasefire for discussion at Monday's direct peace talks between delegations in Istanbul, their second meeting in just over two weeks. Zelenskyy had previously challenged Putin to meet him in Turkey, but Putin stayed away. Russia and Ukraine have established red lines that make a quick deal unlikely, despite a U.S.-led international diplomatic push to stop the fighting. The Kremlin's Istanbul proposal contained a list of demands that Kyiv and its Western allies see as nonstarters. `This document looks like spam' Zelenskyy said that the second round of talks in Istanbul was no different from the first meeting on May 16. Zelenskyy described the latest negotiations in Istanbul as 'a political performance' and 'artificial diplomacy' designed to stall for time, delay sanctions and convince the United States that Russia is engaged in dialogue. 'The same ultimatums they voiced back then -- now they just put them on paper ... Honestly, this document looks like spam. It's spam meant to flood us and create the impression that they're doing something,' Zelenskyy said in his first reaction to the Russian document. He added that the 2025 talks in Istanbul carry 'the same content and spirit' as the fruitless negotiations held in the Turkish city in the early days of the war. The Ukrainian leader said that he sees little value in continuing talks at the current level of delegations. Defence Minister Rustem Umerov led the Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul, while Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to Putin, headed the Russian team. Zelenskyy said he wants a ceasefire with Russia before a possible summit meeting with Putin, possibly also including U.S. President Donald Trump, in an effort to remove obstacles to a peace settlement. The U.S. has led a recent diplomatic push to stop the full-scale invasion, which began on Feb. 24, 2022. 'We are proposing ... a ceasefire before a leaders' summit,' with the U.S. acting as a mediator, Zelenskyy told a media briefing in Kyiv. 'Why a ceasefire before the leaders' meeting? Because if we meet and there is no mutual understanding, no willingness or vision on how to end this, then the ceasefire would end that same day. But if we see readiness to continue the dialogue and take real steps toward de-escalation, then the ceasefire would be extended with U.S. mediation guarantees,' he said. Ukraine is ready to meet at any time from next Monday at a venue such as Istanbul, the Vatican or Switzerland, Zelenskyy said. U.S. defence secretary stays away A second round of peace talks on Monday between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul lasted just over an hour and made no progress on ending the war. They agreed only to swap thousands of their dead and seriously wounded troops. Also, a new prisoner exchange with Russia could take place over the weekend, Zelenskyy said. The U.S. has shown signs of distancing itself from the conflict. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth skipped a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday of an international group coordinating military aid to Ukraine. It was the first time America's Pentagon chief didn't attend alongside 50 other defence leaders since the U.S. created the group three years ago. An analysis published Tuesday by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, said the Kremlin is hoping for U.S. disengagement while avoiding further sanctions. 'Without serious pain, Putin will continue to drag the peace talks out, keep fighting, and wait for the United States to walk away,' it said. In tandem with the talks, both sides have kept up offensive military actions along the roughly 1,000-kilometre (620-mile) front line and carried out deep strikes. Ukraine's Security Service gave more details Wednesday about its spectacular weekend drone strike on Russian air bases, which it claimed destroyed or damaged 41 Russian aircraft, including strategic bombers. The agency claimed the planes struck included A-50, Tu-95, Tu-22, Tu-160, An-12, and Il-78 aircraft, adding that artificial intelligence helped guide the drones thousands of kilometres from Ukraine. It also said it set off an explosion on Tuesday on the seabed beneath the Kerch Bridge, a vital transport link between Russia and illegally annexed Crimea, claiming it caused damage to the structure. But Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that there was no damage. Russia's Defence Ministry said Wednesday that its troops have taken control of another village in Ukraine's northern Sumy region, on the border with Russia. Putin announced on May 22 that Russian troops aim to create a buffer zone that might help prevent Ukrainian cross-border attacks. Since then, Russia's Ministry of Defence claims its forces have taken control of nine Sumy villages. ------ By Hanna Arhirova Illia Novikov in Kyiv, Ukraine and Katie Marie Davies in Manchester, England contributed.

This Quantum Computing Stock Soared Over 30% In May. Is It a Buy Now?

Quantum computing stocks are some of the hottest stocks on Wall Street right now, even more so than AI stocks. While AI is still playing out, quantum computing stocks could pay off quickly if their technology becomes viable and mainstream, especially if you buy some pure-play start-ups. One quantum computing stock that soared in May was Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI). It rose over 30% during the month, but was up over 50% at one point. Clearly, there's massive interest in Rigetti Computing's stock, but is it worth buying here? Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Rigetti Computing is up against some stiff competition Although Rigetti Computing had a great month, it's still down around 40% from its all-time high established in early January. Hype for quantum computing stocks reached an all-time high at the start of the year, so this makes sense, but is there a good reason for it to be down this much? Rigetti Computing is working on a full-stack solution for quantum computing, which means it will deliver customers an entire quantum computing unit ready for use. Rigetti is competing against multiple other start-ups to bring a viable solution to the market, but it's also competing against behemoths in the space, like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL). Everyone is racing to solve the same problem: errors. Quantum computing is different than traditional computing. While traditional computing utilizes bits (a 0 or a 1) to transmit information, quantum computing uses qubits. Qubits transmit information as a superposition of an atom, which is best described as the probability of being a 0 or a 1. This makes quantum computing ideal for many tasks that aren't linear calculations, but it also induces some errors. Because qubits don't transmit exactly a 0 or a 1, there is room for interpretation on what answers they give. This is a fundamental problem with quantum computing, and each competitor is trying different ways to solve this issue. Rigetti has developed several chip architectures to reduce errors and currently has about 99% fidelity, which is comparable to most companies competing in this realm. In 2025, it plans to release a four-chip, 36-qubit system that may provide an actual use case in the real world, although widespread quantum computing use is still years away. Rigetti Computing projects that before 2030, the market opportunity for quantum computing will be only $1 billion to $2 billion, mainly driven by various public companies and government research labs. After 2030, it sees demand really picking up, increasing to a $15 billion to $30 billion market opportunity by 2040. This is a long way out, and the question remains: Is it too far out to be seriously investing in Rigetti Computing? Rigetti Computing is a high-risk, high-reward stock Rigetti Computing's stock already has a fair bit of success priced into it. The company trades at a $3.5 billion valuation despite only generating around $9.2 million in contracts. Rigetti is also deeply unprofitable and recently agreed to sell up to $350 million worth of new shares to increase its cash pile and continue its research and development. This shouldn't surprise anyone, but it dilutes existing shareholders by flooding the market with new shares. This isn't the first time Rigetti has done this, and it won't be the last, and investors need to be prepared for more events like this. Furthermore, if Rigetti loses the quantum computing arms race to another competitor, its stock will become worthless. While nobody wants to see an investment go to $0, it's the reality with some of these quantum computing start-ups. That's why I prefer to invest in some of the larger players also competing in the quantum computing arms race, as there's a base business to fall back on if they lose the race. Rigetti Computing isn't a bad stock by any means; it's just a high-risk one. If you want to own shares, then I'd suggest a smaller position size, as that will protect you from it significantly harming your portfolio should it fail. But even a small position size can grow to a massive one if the stock takes off. I'm unsure if Rigetti Computing will be that company, but we won't know the results for a few more years, so I'll probably avoid the stock for now. Should you invest $1,000 in Rigetti Computing right now?
