Seahawks fan fest: Kenneth Walker rests ‘soreness'; Ernest Jones mourns; more Tory Horton
Not an issue. But a subject.
Walker is the Seahawks' lead running back. He is vital to the Seahawks' new offensive coordinator's promise and directive this season of running the ball 'first and foremost,' as new quarterback Sam Darnold keeps saying. Darnold's fortunes, those of new play caller Klint Kubiak — heck, Seattle's season — will largely go as Walker goes.
If he is not available for any time, for any reason, you can hear the angst from fans across the Pacific Northwest.
Walker missed training-camp practice Friday. He was not available Saturday evening. Zach Charbonnet was the lead back instead when the Seahawks had their annual fan-fest practice in front of a couple thousand fans at Lumen Field. It was Charbonnet, not Walker, who caught a swing pass from Darnold on the first play of 11-on-11 scrimmaging in the stadium.
'It's just a little soreness with his foot right now. But he's fine,' coach Mike Macdonald said Saturday night following the 10th practice of camp.
'We're just taking care of him right now throughout camp.'
Walker, 24, missed six of 17 games last season. The ankle injury he got in December put him on injured reserve and ended his third NFL season. Coaches kept him out of 11-on-11 work during offseason practices this spring. That made it noteworthy he was full go when this training camp began, and for the first practice in full pads to begin this week.
And it's noteworthy when he's sidelined.
This is a team that lost Chris Carson in his prime with a neck injury in 2022. This is a team that in 2017 went through 16 different running backs carrying the ball because of injuries. This is a team that had legend Marshawn Lynch re-join them out of 14 months of semi-retirement, on Christmas Eve 2019, because so many other running backs had gotten hurt that season.
The groans you are hearing about Walker's foot soreness stems from the fact he's yet to play a full season since Seattle drafted him in the second round in 2022 out of Michigan State.
And from the fact he plays the most injured position in the sports, the one with the shortest career span.
Yet before this foot soreness, Walker said this on Wednesday: 'I feel good. You know, it's good to come out here, be able to play with my brothers and grow throughout training camp and everything with them. It's been cool.'
'I've been changing my routine up, how I eat and sleep. And I definitely feel it in my performance, so I'm going to just keep it up and go into it with the season.'
That was when he was participating in almost all the drills with running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu. Thursday when the coach was yanking at a cord attached to the ball as Walker jogged with the ball tightly under his arm.
He hasn't practiced since then.
This is his contract year. He is playing for what he will play and how much he will earn in 2026, and beyond.
He said Wednesday general manager John Schneider and the Seahawks had not talked to him or his agent about a new contract.
The team likely wants to see him in Kubiak's new offense, and him get through the season relatively healthy, before making that decision.
'With that part, honestly, I just want to be positive and keep my mind on football and not a contract and all that,' Walker said. 'I just want to make a positive impact on my team and go out there and play it to the best of my ability, and that's what I've been wanting to do since my rookie year to now.
'I'm going to just keep that same mindset and not worry about everything.'
Ernest Jones mourning
Middle linebacker Ernest Jones was back practicing for the second consecutive day.
Saturday morning Jones IV posted on social media he remains in mourning over his father passing away.
'Give me some time, man... I'm hurting,' his son wrote on X/Twitter.
Macdonald, whose father is in need of a kidney transplant, said he's talked this week to Jones about his loss.
'I can't imagine going through that,' Macdonald said.
'That's why it's so important for us...to have support (in the team facility) for guys when they need it, because our guys need to be helped. Obviously, EJ (Ernest Jones IV) needs it now. We've got 90 guys on the roster. They're all dealing with stuff. It's hard to imagine. You're trying to be empathetic with him and again, be as supportive as we possibly can.' Jones left the team to be with his family at their home in Georgia following his dad's death.
'He's a beast. The guy is an alpha,' Macdonald said of his middle linebacker the team traded for during last season and re-signed this spring. 'He's probably our top leader on defense.
'But it's a tough time. It's really hard, and his family needs him, they're really far away. That's a tough balance right now, so it's going to be a process over the next however long. One of these things never goes away. It's this new reality which is unfortunate.'
Tory Horton keeps rising
Rookie fifth-round draft choice Tory Horton continued his rise from demoralizing knee surgery 10 months ago at Colorado State to the Seahawks starting offense.
On the fourth play of the first scrimmage period Saturday night he caught a pass at the sideline from Darnold. Darnold threw to him again on the next play, but well wide of Horton to end the series.
Later, Horton made another of his deft toe taps inside the sideline while catching a pass from Darnold that otherwise would have been incomplete out of bounds.
'A wise man, Steve Smith Sr. (2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist) once said 'Rookies need to make a play a day to make a name for themselves.' And he's doing that,' Macdonald said of Horton. 'He's making multiple plays every day.'
Horton has for now passed veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Jake Bobo on the depth chart. For the second consecutive practice, Valdes-Scantling ran primarily with Drew Lock and the second offense while Horton was with Darnold and the ones.
Darnold has been throwing to Horton in scrimmages for more than you'd expect a rookie to see the ball when Cooper Kupp and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are also running routes on plays.
'He has shown a lot of great things so far in training camp,' Darnold said of Horton. 'His curiosity and the questions that he asks with the receivers, and to us as quarterbacks (show) he's hungry to learn the game, learn the system.'
No starters in preseason opener
Macdonald stated what was becoming obvious: Seahawks starters will not play Thursday in the first preseason game when Pete Carroll's and Geno Smith's Las Vega Raiders come to Lumen Field.
Seattle's current coach had an opinion of how the fans and city should greet the Seahawks' former coach and traded quarterback.
'Look, we should be cheering Pete when he gets here. We should be cheering Geno,' Macdonald said. 'How could we not?'
Jalen Milroe running
Each day in scrimmages, Kubiak calls designed runs for rookie third-string quarterback Jalen Milroe. Saturday night, Milroe took off around end four times for bulldozing-like gains before a defender approached him outside.
The offensive coordinator appears to be test the edge containment of Seattle's defensive ends — and perhaps a package of plays for Milroe in each game plan during the regular season.
Don't be surprised to see the third-round pick from Alabama running a few, select plays with a running component during the regular season.
Extra points
*Another day, another sterling play from rookie safety Nick Emmanwori. He was step for step, shoulder to shoulder with fellow rookie second-round pick and tight end Elijah Arroyo on a short out route during Macdonald's one-on-one 'competition' period of practice. Emmanwori knocked away Lock's accurate pass. Then Emmanwori turned to the cheering fans. He gave them a wipe-out signal with his hands, and pantomimed putting a sword back in its sheath after a conquest.
Third-year reserve safety went down injured defending a long pass in the end zone during a scrimmage late in practice. He got carted off the field. Macdonald said the fear is a serious knee injury, pending further tests.
*Macdonald had the first-team offense simulate a possession in overtime late in practice. Darnold drove his unit down the field with completions to a Jason Myers 'winning' field goal.
*The Seahawks have a players day off from practice Sunday, the one day off per week mandated by the NFL collective bargaining agreement. They will return to practicing on Monday.

France most represented country in Ballon d'Or nominations
The nominations for the Ballon d'Or are out, and there are plenty of French players being recognised for their performances in the past year. In total, four France internationals on the men's side are in the running for the Ballon d'Or, which is twice as many as they had on the ballot last year. They, along with England, are the most well-represented nominees on the shortlist of 30, with the Three Lions boasting Jude Bellingham (22), Harry Kane (32), Declan Rice (26) and Cole Palmer (23). Here's a breakdown of the French players who are in the running for the Ballon d'Or award and in which respective categories. The winners will be revealed in Paris on September 22. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) Of the four nominees that the French boast in this category, the leading candidate is likely Ousmane Dembélé (28), who was the Ligue 1 Player of the Year this past season and joint top-goalscorer (21 goals). He was an integral part of Paris Saint-Germain as they captured the UEFA Champions League title for the first time. Also in the mix is Desiré Doué (20), who netted six times for PSG in Ligue 1 last season and had a brace and an assist in their 5-0 smashing of Inter in the Champions League final. PSG's record goalscorer Kylian Mbappé (26) is on the list as well, with the French captain capturing the European Golden Shoe in his first season at Real Madrid, while being named their Player of the Season. Rounding out the French nominees is Michael Olise (23), who played an integral part in Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title-winning campaign with 12 goals, while he was among the best at take-ons last season. Several other players that feature in France are on that list, such as Gianluigi Donnarumma (26), Achraf Hakimi (26), Fabian Ruiz (29), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (24), Joao Neves (20), Nuno Mendes (23) and Vitinha (25). No French player has won this award since Karim Benzema (37) at Real Madrid in 2022. (Photo by) On the women's side, two French players have a chance to claim the Ballon d'Or. Sandy Baltimore (25) scored four times in 15 Women's Super League (WSL) appearances for Chelsea en route to them claiming another title. She also netted five times for Les Bleues at the previous UEFA Nations League tournament and had the winner in their 2-1 upset victory over future champions England at the Euros this summer. Clara Mateo (27) was also nominated after leading Paris FC to the Coupe de France Féminine last season and was named to the Première Ligue Team of the Season. Lindsey Heaps (31) at Olympique Lyonnais Féminin is also a nominee, scoring 11 times in 12 league appearances for them last season. (Photo byfor Qatar Airways) In this category, there are two Frenchmen on the ballot. Doué may stand the best chance of winning this award given his performances at such a young age, although Barcelona's Lamine Yamal (18) will be the overwhelming favourite in this category. Lille OSC's Ayyoud Bouaddi (17) was also recognised as one of the best young men's players, making 24 club appearances. Doué's PSG teammate, João Neves, is also on the list with three goals in 29 Ligue 1 appearances a season ago. (Photo by Sameer Al-DOUMY / AFP) (Photo by SAMEER AL-DOUMY/AFP via Getty Images) Lucas Chevalier (23) was rewarded for his strong season at Lille, where he was named the Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year, and he's among the top 10 players nominated for top goalkeeper. He had 11 clean sheets in the previous top-flight campaign. Unsurprisingly, Donnarumma is also on the list, after a splendid Champions League campaign where he was among the heroes, particularly in their come-from-behind victory over Liverpool in the round of 16. Men's Coach of the Year STUTTGART, GERMANY – JANUARY 29: Luis Enrique, Head Coach of Paris Saint-Germain, reacts during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD8 match between VfB Stuttgart and Paris Saint-Germain at Stuttgart Arena on January 29, 2025 in Stuttgart, Germany. (Photo by) While no Frenchman was nominated in this category, the man who guided PSG to European glory stands a good chance of winning this award. Luis Enrique was instrumental in their success last season, as they won their first-ever continental treble, winning the league, the Champions League and the Coupe de France. Women's Coach of the Year SCHAFFHAUSEN, SWITZERLAND – NOVEMBER 24: Sonia Bompastor, head coach of Olympique Lyonnais reacts after the UEFA Women's Champions League group C match between FC Zürich and Olympique Lyon at Wefox Arena on November 24, 2022 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. (Photo by Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty Images) Former French international Sonia Bompastor is a deserving nominee for the Women's Coach of the Year. In her first season in charge of Chelsea, she stepped into the shoes of legendary coach Emma Hayes and kept them winning. Under Bompastor, the Chelsea women won another WSL crown and went undefeated along the way. Men's Team of the Year MUNICH, GERMANY – MAY 31: Luis Enrique, Head Coach of Paris Saint-Germain, lifts the UEFA Champions League trophy after his team's victory, to secure Paris Saint-Germain's first ever UEFA Champions League title in the club's history and a record UEFA Champions League Final winning scoreline of 5-0, following the UEFA Champions League Final 2025 between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Internazionale Milano at Munich Football Arena on May 31, 2025 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by) With all the trophies they collected last season, it's no surprise that PSG were on this list of five, winning the Trophée des Champions, along with the Champions League and Ligue 1 crowns. They were also finalists at the Club World Cup, the first French side to compete in that tournament. Women's Team of the Year MUNICH, GERMANY – MARCH 18: Tabitha Chawinga of Olympique Lyonnais celebrates with her teammates after scoring her team's first goal during the UEFA Women's Champions League Quarter Finals First Leg match between FC Bayern München and Olympique Lyonnais on March 18, 2025 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by) While they failed to claim any European silverware, the Lyon women still had another strong 2024-25 campaign and are one of five teams on the shortlist for this award. They won a record 18th domestic title last season in the league and made the semi-finals of the Champions League, winning all but one match along the way. GFFN | Joel Lefevre

Shedeur Sanders unlikely to receive first-team reps for Eagles practices after stellar Browns debut against Panthers
Shedeur Sanders unlikely to receive first-team reps for Eagles practices after stellar Browns debut against Panthers originally appeared on The Sporting News Shedeur Sanders looked the part as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday night. Cleveland won the preseason opener 30-10 after Sanders completed 14/23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. That won't propel him past Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel overnight, though. As Mary Kay Cabot, Dan Labbe, Scott Patsko, and Ashley Bastock noted, Sanders likely won't be getting first-team reps during the Browns' joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles next week ahead of the team's second preseason matchup. 'The upcoming joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles could prove pivotal for Sanders' trajectory. While it's unlikely he'll receive significant first-team reps against the defending Super Bowl champions, continued strong performances could accelerate his timeline,' the Orange and Brown Talk podcast crew wrote. 'For now, Sanders has done exactly what a developmental quarterback should: he's taken advantage of every opportunity given to him. The question is no longer if he'll move up the depth chart, but when.' Kevin Stefanski now has the rest of training camp and two more preseason games to assess if Sanders is a serious candidate to start at quarterback. We know Joe Flacco won't see any preseason reps, but the team will have problems answering to upset Shedeur fans when Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel touch the ball. Pickett is no shoo-in to remain with the team, with talks of trading him if he plays well dominating the training camp chatter. Meanwhile, Gabriel hasn't looked ready at all despite getting opportunities that Sanders has been denied. Stefanski will have trouble focusing on what he has with those two after Sanders showed he's worthy of more consideration under center.

Summer Signing Puts France Star's Place In Inter Milan Lineup Under Pressure
Ange-Yoan Bonny has shown that he's ready to put the place of Marcus Thuram under threat at Inter Milan. This is the view in today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The Nerazzurri signed the Frenchman to bolster their attacking depth. Having relied on veterans like Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa last season, Inter have made it very clear that they want to instead have a fresh face with room to grow in attack. Ange-Yoan Bonny Puts Place Of Marcus Thuram Under Threat At Inter CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – JUNE 30: Marcus Thuram #9 of FC Internazionale Milano looks on during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 round of 16 match between FC Internazionale Milano and Fluminense FC at Bank of America Stadium on June 30, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by) At Inter, Bonny will be the understudy of fellow French international Marcus Thuram. Whereas Bonny is a promising player who's yet to really prove what he can do, Thuram has already made good on his promise. He has lifted the Serie A title with Inter. Clearly, Thuram is going to start next season as the first-choice starter. However, the 27-year-old cannot take his place for granted. Ange-Yoan Bonny showed with his performance and goal off the bench against Monaco yesterday that he is ready to push Thuram for his spot. If the more experienced striker drops off, then Bonny is ready to take his spot.
