Texas tops preseason college football US LBM Coaches Poll. Odds are against finishing there.
Sure, Texas is good bet finish No. 1. BetMGM Sportsbook gives the Longhorns the best odds (+500) to win the national championship. Last season, Texas held the top spot for three weeks and ultimately finished third behind the Buckeyes and Notre Dame. They'll also turn the quarterbacking duties over to Arch Manning, who appeared ready last season to burnish his family's legacy.
Still, recent history isn't on Texas's side. No preseason No. 1 has finished the season atop the poll since Alabama did it in the 2017 season. In fact, only four teams have managed that feat in the 35-year history of USA TODAY Sports administering the Coaches Poll.

Winning a championship, of course, doesn't rest on what a panel of 67 head coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision schools say in August. But since the College Football Playoff started in 2014, one of top six teams in the preseason poll has won the national championship and finished first in the poll. Here's a look at this year's top six:
For the past two seasons, the team ranked No. 2 in the preseason has gone on to finish No. 1 in the final US LBM Coaches Poll. In the 2024 season, Ohio State followed a winding path to the top – helped in part by the expanded playoff format. The Buckeyes' journey included a run from the eighth seed in the playoffs to a national championship win over Notre Dame, ranked seventh in the preseason and seeded seventh in the playoffs.
The path to No. 1 was a wild ride in 2024 season
In the poll's last 35 years, the team ranked second in the preseason is more likely to finish first than the top-ranked team. Ten preseason No. 2 teams have ended the season at No. 1, compared to just four preseason No. 1 teams. In the past two preseason polls, both Ohio State and Michigan were ranked second behind Georgia.

Georgia's two No. 1 preseason rankings followed two consecutive years when the coaches panel put Alabama at the top ranking only to watch the Bulldogs - its SEC rival - finish No. 1 in the season's final poll and claim back-to-back national championships.
Since USA TODAY began administering the poll in the 1991 season, the coaches' preseason No. 1s have become postseason No. 1s just four times – just over 11% of the time. Only twice have teams held the No. 1 position throughout: Florida State in 1999 and Southern California in 2004.

The NBA is already punting on the Eastern Conference
For most of the 21st century, the disparity between the NBA's Western and Eastern Conferences has been a chasm. The prevailing sentiment among hoops fans has been that the West's overall quality usually blows the East out of the water. Between the contrast in the number of All-NBA selections, the massive difference in the number of league champions this millennium (17 for the West, nine for the East), and the sheer amount of free agent superstars who seemingly waste no time running to states like California and Texas, it's hard to ignore this reality as a basketball lover. I just never thought the NBA itself would directly acknowledge the gulf between the West and East. Well, at least heavily imply it exists, you know? On Friday, the league revealed (news-dumped) its opening night and Christmas schedules. These are, as I'm sure all of you know, traditionally considered the two biggest evenings on the NBA regular season calendar. One tips off eight months of professional men's basketball after a much-needed summer break. The other is essentially a marquee league showcase for people who have been paying attention to the NFL and college football up until that point and are ready to start devoting their energy elsewhere. But when you look at the reported games, you'll notice there's a distinct lack of Eastern basketball flavor. Of the seven total opening night and Christmas games, only the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks are carrying the East's torch. One game. Of 14 total slots, just two East teams. Woof. Essentially, the only two teams being featured are the two who might end up meeting in this year's Eastern Conference Finals. Otherwise, the NBA is temporarily giving up on selling the East to hardcore fans and casuals alike. By ignoring everyone else, the NBA is saying no other East team this season has the juice. At least, not yet. NBA WIN TOTALS: To be clear, I'm not surprised by this development. With the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers operating without an injured Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton, respectively, for the entire season, the East is extremely top-heavy. Giannis Antetokounmpo's Milwaukee Bucks aren't in flux, but they're also not very good. The Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons could all be nice stories and great teams by the end of the year, but they're likely not going to attract a lot of eyeballs right now. There's not a lot to work with here. While the East was already weaker than the West on paper, it, by default, has even less intrigue than ever. By comparison, the West has, at minimum, three of the NBA's five best teams (the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder, Nikola Jokić's Denver Nuggets, and Kevin Durant's Houston Rockets). Luka Dončić plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, arguably the most popular sports team in the world. Potential all-time generational talent Victor Wembanyama is a San Antonio Spur. And, of course, there's still the electric Steph Curry in Golden State and the intrigue of Cooper Flagg in Dallas, among other hotspots. If you were a league trying to sell yourself to bog-standard sports fans, it's just good business to center this conference. But that's the thing. Most of us already knew the NBA's West generally provided better basketball than the East. You know, especially as it tries to get back on its feet. It's still pretty jarring to see the league, the people running the show, agree with us. Serbia has a golden European opportunity For those of you jonesing to see some of your favorite NBA players hoop it up again, may I humbly suggest this year's EuroBasket tournament? I mean, let's be honest, three of the league's four best players will be featured. It's no amateur showcase of young players. It's a serious affair with the vaunted title of European champion on the line. So, to put it lightly, I think it's worth our time. But not every nation participating in EuroBasket is created equal. With all due respect to squads like Iceland and Jeremy Sochan's Poland, they're probably going to have the chance to go home early and put their feet up. FIBA's been keeping track of the leading contenders for the gold medal so far, and I have to say: it's pretty spot on. With Nikola Jokić in the fold, this is Serbia's tournament to lose: I'm not saying Serbia is guaranteed its fourth-ever European championship and the first in nearly a quarter-century. Squads like Franz Wagner's Germany and the always-tough France will be tough outs. But I feel a lot less confident in the French without their twin towers in Rudy Gobert and Wembanyama, who won't play in the tournament. And while Germany is a well-oiled machine of efficiency, it doesn't have the same level of talent or depth that Serbia's program possesses. The Serbians are not so quietly ranked second in FIBA's men's world rankings. They're only a year removed from putting a genuine scare into arguably the greatest on-paper team the United States has ever assembled. And they've only gotten better since then, with more young players coming into their own. Also, again, they still have the world's best player in his prime in Jokić. Call me old-fashioned, but I think it's wonderful that a country with a population of less than seven million people can really put itself on the map as a mainstream basketball powerhouse by winning EuroBasket. Shootaround Kevin Durant isn't fazed by Thunder venom anymore. I don't think he's bluffing. Sydney Colson's season-ending injury is devastating for the Fever. Cory Woodroof outlined some replacement options. Speaking of the injured Fever, at least Caitlin Clark is keeping busy courtside. We're talking about the Heisman. So Ben, give me some of the favorites out there to be in New York at the end of the season. Yeah, no surprise picks, right? Arch Manning at Texas, the favorite right now, plus 600, as you would expect, one of the most hyped prospects coming in. We've seen him play a little bit in previous seasons, but now he's got the reins at Texas, which should be an amazing team. And they get to face week one Ohio State. So you're going to see right off the bat, he's gonna have a chance to potentially take that Heisman leap, and we'll see where his odds go depending on his performance. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, the second choice, tied with Clemson quarterback Cade Klumnik at 9 to 1. And then Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith at 10 to 1. Always difficult for wide receivers to win the Heisman. Not many have done it over the past 15 to 20 years, but he's arguably the best offensive player in the country. Barely guardable, I would say. If anyone in college football can do it, can they get him the ball enough is going to be the question. Can he put up those stats to compete with the other quarterbacks? What about a dark horse that's maybe a little off the beaten path? Yeah, I think South Carolina quarterback Lenori Sellers is 16 to 1. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is also taking some money. He's down to 18 to 1. And I know our guy Corby Craig at Yahoo likes Avery Johnson from Kansas State at 40 to 1. Part of the reason as well, he gets that week one game, that showcase game on ESPN against Iowa State. So if he comes out big in that game, you're not gonna see those 40 to 1 odds last very long. Yeah, we're always looking for Heisman moments, and you're right, that's a great one to give, but maybe it'll give us some Vogue in the meantime also. Close

View more Video Transcript The college football season is finally here, and that means we get to talk about national championships. Ben, who's the favorite right now? Texas fits, uh, as you would expect, right? No, this, uh, this hasn't happened in a long time. Texas is the favorite, plus 500 at Bet MGM. Ohio State just behind them, plus 525, with Georgia and Penn State at 7 to 1, Oregon and Clemson, the next best odds at 9 to 1. Uh, Alabama 10 to 1, Notre Dame 12 to 1, and we'll certainly see a lot of movement, right? Texas plays Ohio State week one. Ohio State 2.5 to 3 point favorite, depending on the book that you're looking at. So one's gonna rise a little bit, one will fall a little bit after that first week. I think Clemson's another fascinating one. They opened at 30 to 1 at one sportsbook out in Vegas. They're now down to 12 to 1 there. One oddsmaker told me it's been kind of an off-season love affair with Clemson. Another book said his highest liability is on Clemson, so a lot of bets as well for Clemson at a couple different books. It's amazing how many huge brands you've already named in this, so it's gonna be an exciting year. Where's the money going right now? Yeah, a lot of, I, I think even though you have the 12-team college football playoff, bets really only think they're, you know, 4 to 6 teams that really have a realistic chance at winning, right? They're just, there's kind of the cream of the crop. And so at Bet MGM, as you would kind of expect, Texas number one in bets, Texas number one in money, Texas, the biggest liability at Bet MGM. You also have Penn State, though, Ohio State and Clemson as some of those teams with the most bets, and fifth, Notre Dame. Uh, but for a lot of, you know, I think you always like to measure the liability, right? What do the sportsbooks stand to lose? Texas number one liability like. Like I said, Penn State number two, Clemson three, LSU and Alabama, who you kind of forget, Alabama still, still out there, you know, they've been rising a little bit. We're 12 to 1 last week, now 10 to 1 at Bet MGM, but Texas is certainly the one that they want to avoid right now, even with those short odds. Let's go full Dumb and Dumber. So you're telling me there's a chance. Like, give me a, give me a long shot that can make a surprise run. I said, why not South Carolina, right? This is a quarterback-driven sport, and certainly, Lenora Sellers is a potential Heisman quarterback, Heisman candidate. We saw him put it together against Clemson last year and had some big performances, and South Carolina, they play seven projected top 21 teams by Bill Connolly's SP+ in their final nine games. So, in other words, they're gonna have the schedule to prove it. Whether or not they win enough of those games to make the playoff and make a run is a different question, but they'll have the spotlight, they'll have the schedule, they just need the results.
