Fisheries sector records 7.1 per cent growth, contributes RM11.8bil to 2024 GDP

THE national fisheries sector recorded a 7.1 per cent growth in output in 2024, with total production reaching 1.91 million tonnes compared to 1.79 million tonnes the previous year.
The Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), in a statement today, said the sector contributed RM11.8 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), accounting for 0.7 per cent of the national GDP, with the annual growth rate increasing to 2.9 per cent.
'The overall value of the fisheries sector rose from RM16.5 billion in 2023 to RM16.9 billion in 2024, representing a 2.5 per cent growth,' the statement said.
According to DOF, the increase in output was driven by the capture fisheries subsector, which recorded landings of 1.39 million tonnes, a 9.6 per cent increase from 2023.
Of this total, coastal fisheries contributed 1.18 million tonnes; deep-sea fisheries, 210,000 tonnes; and inland fisheries, 9,652 tonnes.
As for the aquaculture subsector, DOF reported a moderate increase in production to 511,000 tonnes, compared to 506,000 tonnes the previous year.
Despite a slight decline in seaweed production, freshwater and brackish water aquaculture saw growth of 5.7 per cent and two per cent, respectively.
In the ornamental fish and aquatic plant subsector, DOF stated that production dropped to 209 million ornamental fish and 21 million bundles of aquatic plants.
On international trade, DOF reported that Malaysia's fisheries exports were valued at RM4.02 billion, while imports reached RM6.35 billion.
'Major export destinations included China, Vietnam and Thailand, with the main products consisting of fresh, chilled and frozen goods based on the specific demands of each market,' the statement added.
DOF said the fisheries sector involves a large labour force, including around 106,000 fishermen and 16,873 active aquaculture operators nationwide.
Commenting on the sector's performance, Fisheries director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain said it reflects the sector's resilience and steady performance, with a significant contribution to national food security, coastal economic development and public well-being. — BERNAMA

Cybercrime, cost of living & TNB bills top Parliament agenda today

KUALA LUMPUR: Cybercrime issues, cost of living, and changes to the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) electricity bill structure are among the matters that will be raised in Parliament today. According to the Order of Business on the Parliament portal, Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) will ask the Home Minister about the number of cybercrime cases reported throughout 2024 as well as the ministry's steps to improve the level of digital security of the people, during the question-and-answer session. Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) will ask the Finance Minister about the government's strategy to reduce the burden of the people's cost of living following the country's total debt now reaching RM1.5 trillion, in addition to the World Bank's announcement that Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth for 2025 will fall to 3.9 per cent and the country's situation facing reciprocal tariffs from the United States. Also expected to attract attention will be the question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) who will seek an explanation from the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation on the changes to the TNB electricity bill structure which no longer uses tiered rates for domestic consumers. He also will want to know whether the new mechanism would ensure cost fairness, energy efficiency, and maintain concentrated subsidies for the B40 and M40 groups. In addition, Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) will also pose a question to the Minister of Communications on whether social media such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Xiaohongshu which publish advertisements about various scams and fraudulent investment schemes are held accountable to the victims of scams and fraudulent schemes through the said platforms. After the question-and-answer session, the session will continue with the tabling of the Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025 and Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025, respectively for first reading. The Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament is scheduled to last 24 days, and among the focus is the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan on July 31. - Bernama

OCBC Lowers Malaysia's 2025 Inflation Forecast To 1.5%

Malaysia's headline inflation continued its downward trend, easing to 1.1% year-on-year (YoY) in June, a dip from 1.2% in May. This figure came in softer than market consensus and OCBC Bank's own projection of 1.2%. Core inflation, however, remained stable at 1.8% YoY. According to OCBC Bank Malaysia's Senior ASEAN Economist, Lavanya Venkateswaran, the primary drivers behind the subdued June inflation print were a deceleration in the transportation subcomponent (0.3% YoY from 0.7% in May), along with ongoing deflation in communication services (-5.4% YoY from -5.2%) and a moderation in furnishing prices (0.1% from 0.2%). Inflation in key categories such as food (2.1%), utilities (1.7%), education services (2.2%), and insurance (1.5%) remained unchanged from May. In light of these developments, OCBC has revised its 2025 headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) forecast downwards to 1.5% from a previous estimate of 2.0%. This adjustment is largely influenced by the lower-than-expected inflation rate of 1.4% in the first half of 2025 and 'reduced prospects of RON95 rationalisation,' as the government appears to require a more detailed review of the subsidy mechanism. OCBC had previously factored in a 20-25% increase in RON95 prices from October 2025, an expectation that now seems less likely in the immediate future. Given the view that Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is expected to slow in the second half of 2025 to 3.5% YoY from 4.4% in the first half of 2024, coupled with persistently low inflation, OCBC sees room for further monetary policy easing. 'We have pencilled in another 25 basis points rate cut from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for the remainder of the year,' stated Venkateswaran. Bank Negara Malaysia's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) last met on July 9, 2025, where it decided to cut the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 25 basis points to 2.75%. The next MPC meetings are scheduled for September 4, 2025, and November 6, 2025, providing potential windows for further policy adjustments. Related

Pahang Gov't Aims To Expand Employment Opportunities, Attract More Investments

TEMERLOH, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government is committed to expanding the people's employment opportunities by attracting more investments to the state. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said they also welcome those born in Pahang but currently work elsewhere to return to work in the state, in line with the increasing investment received by Pahang. "We want to provide plenty of job opportunities so that they can return (to work) in Pahang. "I was told that those working elsewhere are willing to return to Pahang if there is an opportunity and if there are better offers,' he told a media conference after the Pahang state-level Asyura Carnival 1447 Hijrah at Surau Kampung Paya Laman, Lanchang here. The carnival, organised by the Pahang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAIP) in collaboration with other agencies, saw 33 teams taking part in the bubur asyura (asyura porridge) cooking competition to instil the spirit of gotong-royong as well as cultivate the culture of giving and sharing sustenance among the community. At the same time, the 46 haj pilgrims who received their offer letter late this year were presented with the Makmur Pahang Initiative in the form of RM760 cash each under the Baraqah Haji Pahang Programme. In addition, Wan Rosly said the state government has consistently expressed high commitment in efforts to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and investment value in Pahang, which has reached RM4 billion as of June. Asked about the extraordinary appreciation to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim either tomorrow or Wednesday, Wan Rosdy hopes the good news will be enjoyed by people in all states, including Pahang. "The Prime Minister has said it will be a good announcement, so let's wait. I don't know either, no one knows,' he said.
