England legend Peter Shilton loses Guinness World Record he set 28 YEARS AGO for most competitive appearances
Last Saturday, Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio walked out onto the pitch for the 1,390th time – a 2-1 home win over Fortaleza in Brazil's Serie A – which equalled former England stopper Shilton's tally set 28 years ago.

And then on Tuesday evening at the Maracana stadium, he broke new ground in men's football as he appeared in goal against Colombian outfit América de Cali – for match number 1,391 of his long career.
This was in the second leg of the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, which is the Europa League equivalent of South American club football.
Fabio finished the match on the winning side as they won 2-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.
To mark the occasion, he celebrated with his family on the pitch as he was presented with a couple of mementoes.
In a professional career spanning 28 years, the 44-year-old has played senior games for Uniao Bandeirante (30), Vasco da Gama (150), Cruzeiro (976) and Fluminense (235).
Fabio, who turns 45 next month, may have begun his senior career five years after the advent of the English Premier League.
But remarkably, despite his unrivalled longevity, he has never had the privilege of donning the famous yellow Brazilian shirt in a competitive fixture.
A member of Brazil's under-17s World Cup triumph in Egypt in 1997, he was an unused sub during the 2003 Fifa Confederations Cup campaign in France.
And he was on the bench the whole time as Carlos Alberto Parreira's Brazil lifted the 2004 Copa America in Peru.
When he was asked about possibly breaking Shilton's record, Fabio told Brazilian media: 'God gave me this gift.
'I have to thank everyone who has been part of my life – my father, mother, sisters, friends, my wife...I try to be a good person.
'The important thing is to help my teammates. I am grateful, but without God nothing would be possible.
'These are difficult games and we are facing very strong teams. We are always striving to achieve our goals, which are the titles.'
Provided he is fit, Fabio could extend the record much further into the distance, especially as the Brazilian domestic league does not stop until December 21.

Shilton, who played between 1966 and 1997, is acknowledged as the record holder for the most competitive men's professional games, though the total is disputed.
Guinness World Records and a number of statistics websites say the tally is 1390.
Yet Shilton, 75, who played a record 125 times for England, claimed on social media that it should be 1387.
The discrepancy comes from Guinness officials including 16 unofficial games that Shilton does not include – while he includes 13 games he played for England's Under-23s side that normally are not counted.

Inside Arsenal's sensational swoop for Eberechi Eze: A new 'no back-ups' philosophy, Josh Kroenke's crucial influence and unfinished business for a boy left crying in his bedroom for a week
When Arsenal exec Tim Lewis called Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish late on Wednesday afternoon to tell him that his club would meet the asking price for , he did so safe in the knowledge that with those words the deal was effectively done. That with one sentence Tottenham – who had agreed terms with the gifted playmaker - would be instantly blasted out of the water. That in this particular North London battle it would be game over in the space of mere seconds.

'Ferocious' and 'no harder game for Liverpool on planet earth'
Find more from Matty Renton at The Magpie Channel, external Liverpool are in a tricky situation. Despite apparently 'winning the transfer window' with monster deals for Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and others, the Reds are going into the second weekend of the season worryingly short in sold Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, while tragically losing Diogo Jota. Ekitike doesn't cover all three. Liverpool have seemingly put all our eggs into Alexander Isak's basket. While the striker is desperate to come, Newcastle United, who have failed in all their attempts to buy replacements, have doubled down on their going nowhere usually wait to get the right player instead of buying stopgaps. And for this reason, I see Isak signing in January. The situation mirrors Coutinho's exit to Barcelona in 2018. The Brazilian feigned a back injury and did everything he could to leave the summer previous, but with Liverpool not prepared for his sale, they simply said no. Then, the Reds prepared for his departure and used him well for five months before cashing in. I expect the same thing to happen with the Swede, although reintegration at St. James' Park will be tougher given his scorched earth Instagram for Monday's game against the Magpies? Gulp. There is literally no harder game for Liverpool on planet earth right now given the ferocity with which their players and fans will approach it. I'm praying for no more from Jordan Chamberlain at Empire of the Kop, external

Tottenham remain interested in Savinho after missing out on Eberechi Eze
Tottenham have swiftly moved on to different targets after they missed out on Eberechi Eze and remain interested in the potential signing of Manchester City's Savinho, the PA news agency understands. Spurs were all set to capture Eze after they reached an agreement with Crystal Palace on Wednesday for a £60million plus £7.5m in adds-on deal until Arsenal swooped in to hijack the transfer of the England international. Advertisement Eze would have filled the creative void at Tottenham left by James Maddison, who is set to miss the rest of the season after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee earlier this month, but Thomas Frank must now shift focus elsewhere. Intensity 🆙 💪 @BetMGMUK — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 20, 2025 Talks were opened between Spurs and Manchester City on August 11 regarding the versatile Savinho, who made 48 appearances and produced 13 assists in his debut campaign at Etihad Stadium. While dialogue cooled as Tottenham explored a big-money move for Eze over the past week, Savinho is still a target for the north London club, PA understands, and reports in Brazil suggest an 80million euros (£69.2m) bid is being prepared. Frank has enjoyed a strong start to life at Spurs, with an impressive Super Cup display in defeat to Paris St Germain followed by a 3-0 victory over Burnley last Saturday but next month will bring the challenge of Champions League football. Advertisement With Maddison out long-term and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) sidelined for the foreseeable future, the Danish coach is in need of attacking reinforcements and talks over Savinho could soon accelerate, especially after Saturday's trip to Man City.
