Union Bank of India waives charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance

Union Bank of India has announced a complete waiver of charges for not maintaining the minimum balance in general savings deposit accounts, effective from the quarter-ending September, the bank said in a press note.
'This move is aimed at ensuring uniformity, fairness, and enhancing accessibility of basic banking services to customers. We are committed to supporting inclusive growth and believe this step will further strengthen our engagement with the underserved segment of the population,' the bank said. However, the waiver is not applicable to other customized products of savings accounts.
Earlier, the charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance in accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, and savings accounts of pensioners and senior citizens were already removed.
Previously, several other banks, such as State Bank of India (SBI), Indian Bank, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Bank of Baroda, had waived charges for not maintaining minimum balance in savings accounts.

Banks complete re-KYC of over 1.42 mn accounts in first month of campaign

In the first month of the nationwide campaign by banks at the Gram Panchayat (GP) level to re-verify the KYC details of existing Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts, as well as other bank accounts, the re-KYC process for over 1.42 million bank accounts has been completed. Additionally, over 600,000 new accounts have been opened under PMJDY, more than 700,000 have enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), 1.2 million have enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and around 300,000 under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY). More than 100,000 camps were conducted during this time. The three-month drive, which started on July 1, is set to end on September 30, 2025. The camps are also being utilized to raise awareness about unclaimed deposits and address grievances. PMJDY was launched in August 2014 to bank the unbanked by facilitating the opening of basic savings bank deposit accounts, with associated features such as RuPay debit cards and an in-built overdraft facility. As of now, over 559 million accounts have been opened under PMJDY. Since many of the accounts are completing 10 years — after which re-KYC is mandatory — banks are conducting these Gram Panchayat-level camps over a three-month period to facilitate the re-KYC process.

Over 559 mn accounts opened under financial inclusion scheme Jan Dhan Yojana since 2014: Govt

New Delhi: More than 559 million bank accounts have been opened under the financial inclusion scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) since its launch in 2014, the government informed Parliament on Monday, highlighting efforts to boost financial inclusion and improve access to credit. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the Centre has taken several initiatives to ensure that access to basic banking services leads to meaningful participation in the formal financial system. Launched in August 2014, the PMJDY was a key step in banking the unbanked by facilitating the opening of basic savings bank deposit accounts. These accounts come with features such as RuPay debit cards and an in-built overdraft facility. Chaudhary said the government has undertaken several measures to ensure that credit inclusion complements deposit inclusion, with a strong focus on funding the unfunded. The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) provides collateral-free credit of up to ₹ 20 lakh to micro and small enterprises, thereby enabling self-employment and income generation. Since its inception, 53.85 crore loans amounting to over ₹ 35.13 trillion have been sanctioned under the scheme, he said. Dedicated schemes such as Stand-Up India (SUPI), PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi), PM Vishwakarma, and the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) have been implemented to expand credit access for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs, street vendors, artisans, and other micro-enterprises. The Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU) and the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) have been set up to reduce credit risk for lenders and incentivizes formal lending to underserved segments. To strengthen credit assessment frameworks for individuals lacking conventional credit history, the Government is leveraging technology and alternative data sources, Choudhary said. Grameen credit score has been announced to support credit appraisal of self-help group (SHG) borrowers and rural populations, including farmers and marginalized communities. This initiative is expected to enhance the quality and objectivity of credit decisions and facilitate improved access to formal credit in rural areas, he said.

SBI, two other investors to make a killing from Rs 3,600-crore JSW Cement IPO

MUMBAI: JSW Cement, the slag-focused cement maker that had scaled down its primary share sale size by Rs 400 crore, has fixed the price-band for the Rs 3,600-crore issue that opens on August 7 at Rs 139-147, valuing it at the upper end at Rs 20,040 crore. The issue consists of Rs 1,600 crore in fresh issue, making this the largest fresh issue in the cement sector in the past 10 years, and Rs 2,000 crore in offer for sale by Apollo Global, Synergy and SBI, which had collectively invested Rs 1,600 crore in the company in the third quarter of FY22. The company was planning the IPO in January 2025 but last September the regulator Sebi had withheld permission for alleged regulatory lapses involving the inter-se transfer of investments held by Hexa Securities and Finance in which several Jindal family members, including group chairman Sajjan Jindal, were holding director positions. The Rs 2,000-crore OFS involves SBI and two other investors AP Asia Opportunistic Holding (Apollo Global) and Synergy Metals Investments Holdings offloading their stakes. While AP Asia Opportunistic Holdings, and Synergy Metals will be selling shares worth Rs 937.5 crore each in the OFS, SBI will be selling shares worth Rs 125 crore, making a clean profit over its weighted average investment cost of Rs 65.45 per share or 124.6% gains on its investment. The other two investors will be making 115% and 117%, respectively off their investment in four years. The company intends to utilise Rs 800 crore of the fresh issue proceeds for part financing the capex on a new integrated cement unit at Nagaur in Rajasthan, and a further Rs 720 crore to repay debt which stood at Rs 6,166.6 crore as of March 2025, up from Rs 5,836 crore a year before. The company has already deployed Rs 287.8 crore in its Nagaur unit till June 2024, out of a total estimated cost of Rs 2,697.3 crore. The remaining Rs 2,409.4 crore will be funded from IPO proceeds (and project loan of Rs 1,609.4 crore). The company with 20.6 million tonnes of annual capacity, which it is planning to take to 41.8 million over the next four to five years, had filed the IPO papers with Sebi in August 2024, but Sebi kept the approval on hold in September and the final approval was accorded only this January.
