Over 559 mn accounts opened under financial inclusion scheme Jan Dhan Yojana since 2014: Govt

New Delhi: More than 559 million bank accounts have been opened under the financial inclusion scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) since its launch in 2014, the government informed Parliament on Monday, highlighting efforts to boost financial inclusion and improve access to credit.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the Centre has taken several initiatives to ensure that access to basic banking services leads to meaningful participation in the formal financial system.
Launched in August 2014, the PMJDY was a key step in banking the unbanked by facilitating the opening of basic savings bank deposit accounts. These accounts come with features such as RuPay debit cards and an in-built overdraft facility.
Chaudhary said the government has undertaken several measures to ensure that credit inclusion complements deposit inclusion, with a strong focus on funding the unfunded.
The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) provides collateral-free credit of up to ₹ 20 lakh to micro and small enterprises, thereby enabling self-employment and income generation. Since its inception, 53.85 crore loans amounting to over ₹ 35.13 trillion have been sanctioned under the scheme, he said.
Dedicated schemes such as Stand-Up India (SUPI), PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi), PM Vishwakarma, and the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) have been implemented to expand credit access for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs, street vendors, artisans, and other micro-enterprises.
The Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU) and the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) have been set up to reduce credit risk for lenders and incentivizes formal lending to underserved segments.
To strengthen credit assessment frameworks for individuals lacking conventional credit history, the Government is leveraging technology and alternative data sources, Choudhary said.
Grameen credit score has been announced to support credit appraisal of self-help group (SHG) borrowers and rural populations, including farmers and marginalized communities. This initiative is expected to enhance the quality and objectivity of credit decisions and facilitate improved access to formal credit in rural areas, he said.

Parliament Monsoon Session 2025 Live: Key bills on agenda as Houses resume today amid Opposition uproar over Bihar SIR

Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Mansukh Mandaviya, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jyotiraditya Scindia and other MPs in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, in New Delhi on Wednesday. Parliament monsoon session live: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resume proceedings on Thursday amid uproar from the Opposition INDIA bloc demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. However, the Union government has rejected the demand, citing the matter is sub judice before the Supreme More Union minister Kiren Rijiju said in the House on Wednesday, 'We all know that the matter of SIR is under the consideration of the Supreme Court. The matter raised by the opposition is clearly sub judice, so a discussion on this issue cannot be held in this House.' He invoked Rule 186 and Rule 352 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business to support the BJP-led government's stand. Rijiju further stated that the Election Commission of India, being an autonomous constitutional body, could not be subjected to House discussions on its functioning. A similar ruling had been given a day earlier in the Rajya Sabha by deputy chairman Harivansh Singh. The row over Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) intensifies after the poll body released the draft voter roll data from Bihar's SIR exercise, excluding over 65 lakh voter enumeration forms. This triggered criticism from the Opposition, who accused the ECI of acting under pressure from the BJP-led central government. In an adjournment notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary, Congress MP Manickam Tagore alleged large-scale deletions and 'unjustified inclusions' in the draft rolls. The demand to debate the issue has led to frequent adjournments in both Houses of Parliament this session. MP urges MPLADS Fund hike & GST exemption

Anantapur: MP Ambica Lakshmi Narayana has called for urgent reforms to the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), highlighting the need to increase annual allocations and exempt development works from GST. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he pointed out that the current allocation of Rs 5 crore per MP, unchanged since 2011, has become insufficient due to inflation, rising construction costs, and growing public needs. In large rural constituencies like Anantapur, where drinking water scarcity, poor road connectivity, and lack of basic infrastructure persist, the existing funds are barely enough to meet essential requirements. He strongly opposed the imposition of GST on development works carried out under MPLADS, stating that these should be treated on par with other welfare schemes implemented by the central government, which enjoy GST exemption. The MP urged the Union Finance Minister and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation to consider the demands, including increasing of MPLADS funds from the current Rs 5 crore to at least Rs 10 crore per MP annually, provide complete GST exemption for all MPLADS-funded works. He stressed that these measures would significantly strengthen rural development in backward regions such as Rayalaseema, enabling MPs to address critical local needs more effectively.
