Property owners hit with severe penalties for crimes along riverbank: 'Threatening human health'
A pair of property owners in Washington are now on the hook for a $204,000 fine after being caught "building unauthorized structures in protected areas" along the Deschutes River.
In a news release, the Washington Department of Ecology reported that Chuck and Austin Rogers, two property owners in Thurston County, took part in "unpermitted shoreline development" after building a series of structures within 200 feet of the Deschutes River's ordinary high water mark.
According to the department, the property owners used the protected and environmentally sensitive area to "support a recreational vehicle park and commercial hauling business where they store large volumes of construction debris next to the river."
In addition to the construction of unauthorized buildings, the property owners were caught illegally placing fill in the Deschutes River as well as clearing land near the river's banks.
Authorities at the Washington Department of Ecology and Thurston County previously spoke to the Rogers regarding the laws and environmental regulations put in place in the area. Despite this, the property owners continued to develop buildings on the shoreline.
The Washington Department of Ecology stated the shoreline used by the Rogers was "designated to be in a 'conservancy environment.'"
In 2021, the Deschutes Basin Habitat Conservation Plan was finalized and implemented by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The initiative aims to protect and improve fish and wildlife habitats and ensure water quality throughout the river.
Bobbak Talebi, the Southwest Region Director at the Washington State Department of Ecology, explained the significance of the Rogers' actions following the department's initial warnings.
"They demonstrated they are unwilling to follow through with local and state regulators to restore the damage they have caused," Talebi said. "Instead, they chose to expand their unpermitted development activities, knowing full well they are threatening human health and the environment."
Talebi also noted that the Rogers had "harmed aquatic habitat, increased the threats of streambank erosion and floods in the area, and degraded local water quality."

Hunting show host from Georgia banned for life from hunting in Kansas
A hunting-show host from Georgia has received a lifetime hunting ban in Kansas for illegally killing deer in that state. Matt Jennings, 35, host of 'The Game,' pleaded guilty to two counts of 'illegal taking of a white-tailed deer in interstate commerce,' according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Jennings, from Bowden, Ga., also admitted to using footage from the hunts on his show. Jennings was sentenced this week to five years probation and banned from hunting or fishing in Kansas for the rest of his life as a result of the case, which originated in 2022. He then drove the deer to Oklahoma, where he registered the kill using an Oklahoma tag. On Nov. 19, 2022, Jennings killed another antlered deer near Wakeeney, Kansas. He had a valid permit for the area, but violated state law by exceeding the bag-limit of one antlered deer per season. Jennings was ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and a $10,000 fine. He also was ordered to forfeit the antlers from the deer he poached. Additionally, during his probation, Jennings cannot guide, hunt, trap, or fish in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. The case was investigated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, with assistance from agencies in other states.

Former WWE Star Shot Dead at 41 in Arkansas, Man Taken Into Custody
Former WWE NXT star Kevin Nikel, better known to grapple fans as both Ivan Warsaw and Knuckles Madsen, was shot dead in Arkansas in the early hours of June 10, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Department. He was 41 years old. Nikel also went by Kevin Nykiel. Officers were called to a home in the community of Rogers, close to both the Oklahoma and Missouri borders, just before midnight after receiving reports of a shooting. First responders rushed Nikel to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A Benton County spokesperson revealed that Nikel was shot in the abdomen. Lt. Shannon Jenkins told KNWA that a man named Michael Hogue, 50, who lives at the address where Nikel was found. He was taken into custody on probation violations and has not been charged in relation to the wrestler's death. Nikel's death was also confirmed by the wrestling promotions Dog Pound Wrestling and NWA Texas. 'NWA Texas is saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Nikel, professionally known as Ivan Warsaw & Knuckles Madsen. His contributions to Professional Wrestling will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time. Rest in Peace,' NWA Texas said in a statement. His career began in Texas in 2007, where he worked for various promotions in the area. The Memphis-born star joined the WWE in 2012 and remained there until 2013, competing under the NXT banner. During his time with World Wrestling Entertainment, Nikel competed against fellow stars Mojo Rawley and Kassius Ohno. Pro Wrestling Insider reported at the time that Nikel had been desperate to remain with WWE and was even open to 'donning clown gear, but WWE decided to move on without him.' In 2020, WWE star Xavier Woods posted a video of Nikel in character as a deranged clown. Woods wrote in the caption that Nikel was 'a dude who could do so many different and creative gimmicks it was insane.' Nikel elaborated on the gimmick that never took off in an interview with PWMania. 'I had worked with Matt Borne two years ago. We were a tag team kind of deal. After Matt died, it was on my mind for awhile and I wanted to show some other things that I could do. I didn't want to be Doink, I wanted to be a creepy guy outside your window with the makeup on,' Nikel said. While in a 2023 interview, fellow former WWE star Enzo Amore admitted that former WWE Champion Bray Wyatt had wanted Nikel to be a part of his hugely popular Wyatt Family stable but that management shot the idea down. His last match was almost precisely one year before his death, where he teamed with Tino Valentino in a losing effort against The OMGs during an event for Texas Style Wrestling Night in Frisco, according to CageMatch. In recent times, Nikel operated Ozark Mountain Wrestling in Rogers. A statement on the organization's social media paying tribute to him mentioned that he is survived by his son, Zach, 8, who was the 'center of his world.' KNWA's Doug Warner reports that Zach's mother said that their son loved to hang out with his father at OMW and would occasionally step through the ropes onto the mat. She also told Warner that Nikel was known in the area for working with local children. At least one commenter paid tribute to Nikel in the comments under Warner's post, writing: 'He has mentored our son the last two years and has helped him through a lot! Great guy that was just trying to do what's best for him, his son, and the community.' Nikel was due to compete in OMW against Total Nonstop Action X division champion Moose on July 19. After news of Nikel's death was made public, Moose acknowledged his passing on Instagram. 'Wow.. this hit hard just got the news on Kevin Nykiel we were supposed to wrestle next weekend but his life got taken way too early…. Great human. Great heart.
