Commentator John Gooden signs new UFC contract with 'certain pledges'
Gooden, who has served as one of the UFC's premier play-by-play commentators in rotation with Jon Anik and Brendan Fitzgerald, recently inked a new multiyear contract extension to continue his role.
After breaking into the space as a commentator for Cage Warriors, Gooden called his first UFC event in March 2014. He's been a mainstay since and is proud his work was validated in the form of a new deal.
'I'm never presumptuous, but I feel like I have a good working relationship with the UFC, with the team,' Gooden told MMA Junkie. 'I've learned how they like to do business. You guys might notice in the last year-and-a-half or so, I've been working stateside. That was a big commitment on their part to fly me out as much as they have done. And peeling back the curtain a little bit, I was spending a lot of time between shows over the last five years or so, it might have been six or nine months between commentary calls.
'I might get to do some reporting, maybe a desk gig. Commentary is a bit of a monster and a beast unto itself. If I'm out of rhythm, I'm obviously going to be a bit more tactful on the producers. I feel like that was one of the reasons they were trying to get me stateside. And of course they are sympathetic to me trying to put food on the table. Really happy. I love working with the UFC.'
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic throwing the UFC's schedule and event layout into disarray, Gooden found himself with a less frequent lineup of obligations. The decrease in international events and increase in cards located at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas created some challenges, but Gooden said things are looking promising going into the new year.
Gooden already has commentary gigs lined up for Saturday's UFC Fight Night 250 in Saudi Arabia (ESPN+), UFC Fight Night 251 in Las Vegas on Feb. 15, then UFC Fight Night 255 in London on March 22 over the first quarter of 2025.
Consistency is something Gooden said is a crucial in delivering his best product for the audience, so he has high hopes for what's to come with the UFC making its commitment to him.
'They've made certain pledges to me in this contract,' Gooden said. 'I'm going to be involved probably the same amount as I was last year. I think the guys really do a good job of spreading out all the responsibilities and the assignments over a yearly period. Really tricky job. Obviously we all want to be on as many big cards, interesting cards – whatever it might be. I'm happy to help out wherever and in whatever capacity.
'What a gig it might be for our overlords to take a view of everyone who holds a microphone for the UFC and say, 'Let's put him there or her there.' I trust them that they'll make all the decisions and have our best interests in minds so that we can all stay within a good amount of reps to deliver the highest quality possible, which is what the UFC expect from us and, of course, what the fans expect.
'Being part of the UFC is absolutely massive. I'm really happy. Let's go again. Let's see if we can get to 20 years. I thought 10 was going to be a big of a grasp, but this is Year 11. I've managed this far, so why not?'
Check out the video above as Gooden and MMA Junkie senior reporter Mike Bohn discuss his new contract and the top storylines in a loaded February UFC schedule on 'The Bohnfire' podcast.

Aljamain Sterling: Lerone Murphy will 'have his work cut out for him' in UFC title fight
Aljamain Sterling warns Lerone Murphy of the challenge that awaits him in UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Murphy (17-0-1 MMA, 9-0-1 UFC) remained unbeaten when he scored a first-round, spinning back elbow of octagon debutant Aaron Pico in Saturday's UFC 319 co-headliner at United Center in Chicago. The incredible finish got the attention of Volkanovski (27-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC), who said a Murphy title shot is a no-brainer after UFC 319. "Lerone Murphy is a tough and smart fighter," Sterling told MMA Junkie. "Volkanovski is a tough and very smart fighter. I got to train with him, I know Volk first hand. He's a cardio machine, and very technically sound, well rounded everywhere. He's the champ and has been the champ for quite some time for a reason. So, I don't think he got there by accident. Lerone's going to have his work cut out for him." Sterling (24-5 MMA, 16-5 UFC) meets former title challenger Brian Ortega (16-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) in Saturday's UFC Fight Night 257 co-main event from Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. As he looks to enter the title picture, Sterling knows Murphy's special finish separates him from the other contenders. "It's going to be very hard for me to top a spinning back elbow," Sterling laughed. "Kudos to him, fair play, and hopefully things go well this weekend for me, and I'm at least in the conversation again."

Josh Allen to sit out 3rd preseason game, as Bills focus on position competition at safety, receiver
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills are saving quarterback Josh Allen for the regular season in having the NFL's reigning MVP sit out a third consecutive preseason outing. A number of other Bills starters and key backups won't be as fortunate with coach Sean McDermott still finalizing his depth chart entering their preseason finale at Tampa Bay on Saturday night. 'No,' was McDermott's response on Thursday on whether Allen will play against the Buccaneers. 'I have a responsibility to protect him and in doing so protect our team,' he added. 'I think he's on schedule and he's looked good. ... And I feel good about where he's at right now.' Aside from 2020, when COVID-19 wiped out the NFL's exhibition schedule, this will mark the first time in Allen's eight years he's not played a competitive preseason snap. What helps is Allen getting extensive time with the starters in Buffalo's joint practice with the Bears in Chicago last week. Another bonus is Allen getting plenty of time working with the starters during lengthy situational periods at training camp. Question marks, however, remain, with McDermott specifically mentioning the starting safety spot opposite Taylor Rapp and the backup receiver hierarchy as not yet being determined. A second-round pick, Bishop was supposed to compete for the job last year before missing much of training camp with a shoulder injury. This summer, Bishop's development was slowed by a quadriceps injury, and he struggled in his preseason debut in a 38-0 loss to Chicago on Sunday. 'Fully confident in Cole. It's the reps that he needs to create these calluses that you get when you're young and trying to grow into a position,' McDermott said. 'But being out there is how you get that experience.' As for his overall assessment of the safety position, McDermott said: 'We know who T-Rapp is. We know what he brings to the table. It's the other piece to go along with T-Rapp.' The top three spots are considered secure with returning starters Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman plus offseason free-agent addition Joshua Palmer. That leaves Curtis Samuel, Elijah Moore, Laviska Shenault and several others competing for the remaining two or three spots entering the NFL's cutdown day on Tuesday. Samuel's job security is in question. The ninth-year player, entering the second season of a three-year contract, missed a majority of camp with an assortment of injuries, and only resumed practicing this week. When healthy, Samuel provides a dynamic presence to the Bills offense as he did last postseason, when he had six catches for 81 yards and two TDs. Trouble is, injuries limited him to 31 catches for 253 yards and a TD in the regular season. 'He's looked good. And now it's how does he look through the weekend here?' McDermott said of Samuel. Shakir, meantime, is on track to resume practicing by next week after sustaining a high ankle sprain on Aug. 1. Allen expressed confidence he won't have any issues rebuilding chemistry with Shakir, who emerged as his primary option in leading the Bills with 76 catches and 821 yards last season. 'I'm as confident in him as I am anybody,' Allen said. 'I've got no doubt when he gets back, it'll be smooth.' Notes Without mentioning who, McDermott said some but not all starters will play Saturday. ... Former Bills receiver Gabe Davis visited Buffalo on Wednesday in his bid to find a new team after being released by Jacksonville in May. Davis' health is in question as he recovers from a torn meniscus in his left knee. He spent his first four seasons in Buffalo before signing with the Jaguars last year. ... The Bills had no update on the status of starting CB Tre'Davious White, who was carted off with an apparent leg injury during practice Thursday. ___

King of Violence title challengers Mike Perry and Jeremy Stephens came face-to-face Thursday following the BKFC 82 pre-fight news conference in Newark, N.J. Ferea shoved Borga, who then charged forward as promotion staff intervened. BKFC 82 takes place Oct. 4 at Prudential Center and marks the promotion's first event in the state of New Jersey.
