
Why Maharat could be the Arab world's answer to MasterClass
Building a multi-million dollar business from scratch requires an understanding of the market and bold ambition while becoming a revered pop star can feel more like a beginning than a culmination – these are just some of the insights to be gleaned from Maharat, a new online Arabic platform dedicated to the region. Similar to the popular American subscription platform MasterClass, Maharat features a range of high-profile Arab personalities offering their own experiences and tips through a series of curated courses. Available online with subscriptions starting at Dh25 per month, Maharat launched six classes featuring mentors such as Toufic Kreidieh, executive chairman of Brands for Less Group; celebrity make-up artist Bassam Fattouh; and singer Ragheb Alama. Palestinian chef Salam Dakkak and Iraqi singer Rahma Riad also offer courses based on their respective career success. Maharat chief executive and co-founder Arman Khederlarian states the platform was created with a regional audience in mind, with careful attention given to the diversity of mentors' nationalities and the presentation of courses. This also involves discussions with industry leaders and companies across the Gulf and the Levant to ensure the content is relevant and meets demand. 'We collaborate with instructors to ensure that their masterclasses are delivered in a dialect that feels authentic to them while also being widely understood throughout the Arab world,' Khederlarian tells The National. "[Arabic] subtitles also help to fill in any gaps between dialects. 'Whether it's music, acting, business, beauty, or cooking - we are curating content that is native to the dynamics and nuances of the Arab world and we then extract learnings that can be generalised to as wide of an audience base as possible, so that it speaks to the aspirations of all Arab audiences from the GCC to the Levant.' One of the main motivations for Kreideh in taking part in the platform is to offer practical insights and hard-earned advice gained from real-life experience. 'My goal with this masterclass is to provide a practical, step-by-step guide to building and growing a successful business in today's competitive market," he says. "I want students to walk away with real-world strategies they can apply immediately – whether they're launching a startup, scaling an existing business, or simply looking to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. 'I want my students to feel motivated, confident and prepared to take action in their own entrepreneurial adventures.' Khederlarian sees the Maharat model not as a replacement for traditional educational courses in business and the arts, but as a means of reaching students who are unable to access these institutions due to various reasons. 'While in-person education will always be valuable, online learning allows us to eliminate financial, geographic and societal barriers, giving more individuals access to previously unattainable expertise,' he says. 'In today's digital age, platforms like Maharat are critical to the future of education in the Arab world." Kreidieh says it's that combination of innovative thinking and hard work that will help a new generation of Arab start-ups achieve success. 'Many people think that great businesses are built overnight or that entrepreneurs are simply born with a special gift,' he says. "The reality is that success comes from continuous learning, calculated risks, and the ability to evolve. The business landscape is constantly changing, and the most successful people are those who are willing to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and stay committed to their vision.'

China's export curbs on rare earth minerals worry Europe
China is flexing its economic muscle in more senses than one. Its decision to restrict exports of the rare minerals and magnets has sent shivers down the spines of global automakers in Germany and in the United States. Rare earth minerals are needed in key sectors like car manufactures, semi-conductor industry, aerospace industry. The Chinese possess half of the global rare earth mineral reserves. The Chinese decision was mainly to counter US President Donald Trump's refusal to export crucial computer chips needed for AI, and the US' refusal to allow imports from Chinese chipmaker Huawei. More importantly, what has angered the Chinese is the refusal of student visas to Chinese students, and the cancellation of the visas of those who are students in American universities. Europe is caught in a crossfire in the trade war between the giants, the US and China. Europeans, as well as Americans, have suddenly realised that it is not such a good thing to depend on China for either rare earth minerals or even manufactured goods including cars. The West is desperately looking to reduce its dependence on China and it is seeking to diversify its supply chain. European Union (EU) Commissioner for Industrial Strategy Stephane Sejourne said, 'We must reduce our dependencies on all countries, particularly on a number of countries like China, on which we are more than 100 per cent dependent.' Meanwhile EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said that he was in touch with his Chinese counterpart and they had agreed to clarify the rare earth minerals situation. Major automakers like Mercedes and BMW are claiming that they have enough inventories and their production schedules will not be affected. But it is clear that shortages are looming on the horizon. The US-China trade talks are quite crucial, even as American President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, 'I like President Xi of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH.' Trump is blaming China for breaking the deal made in Geneva to roll back the tariffs that each side had imposed on the other, Trump reduced the tariffs from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, and China reduced it from 135 per cent. Mercedes-Benz production chief Jeorg Burzer said he was talking to top suppliers of the company about building 'buffer' stocks anticipating trouble in the future. He said that Mercedes is well stocked for now and production schedules are not affected. But automakers in Europe and America have aired their worries about the curbs on Chinese exports of the rare earth minerals. Many of the captains of industry are lobbying with their governments to solve the deadlock. Wolfgang Weber, CEO of Germany's electrical and digital industry association, ZVEI, said in an emailed statement, 'Companies currently feel abandoned by politicians and are partly looking for solutions to their difficult situation on their own in China.' Trump's declaration of the tariff war against America's trade partners had mostly caused quiet murmurs, and many countries from the EU and other countries like Japan are trying to work out a trade deal without crossing swords with the US. But China was not willing to take Trump's tariffs passively. It is aware that it has power enough to counter American tariffs with tariffs of its own. The Chinese have always been defiant of the Western world, even when they did not have the economic power they now have. There is of course the harsh fact. China needs the Western countries to maintain its economic growth. It is its exports to Western countries that have made it rich and powerful. Europe and US need the cheap labour of China, and China needs the Western markets. They have to strike a deal with each other.

UAE tops region for most skilled workforce, says report

The country also leads the Arab world across all major categories, including business, technology, data skills, and AI maturity, positioning itself as the region's leading hub for digital readiness and Global Skills Report 2025, published by Coursera on Wednesday, draws from the learning activity of more than 170 million users worldwide and benchmarks performance across over 100 accompanying AI Maturity Index provides a broader view, factoring in academic publications and metrics from the IMF and OECD to measure national progress in AI research, innovation, and UAE ranked 38th globally overall, 17th in business, 46th in data, 53rd in technology, and 32nd in AI maturity, making it the top performer in the Arab world across all four categories, and first in MENA when it comes to overall skills readiness.'The UAE is positioning itself for a tech-driven future, with 87% of employers emphasising technological literacy, AI, and big data as their top priorities,' the report said, linking the country's performance to its national efforts to transition into a knowledge-based economy powered by skilled Emirati country also boasts the highest rate of Coursera learners in the region, with 13% of its labour force actively engaged on the platform. As the total learner base reaches 1.3 million, the UAE's appetite for digital skills shows no signs of slowing to the report, GenAI course enrolments alone surged by 344% year on year — more than double the regional growth rate — while professional certificate and cybersecurity enrolments jumped by 41% and 14%, are playing an increasingly active role in this transition, accounting for 21% of GenAI learners in the UAE, 24% of those enrolled in STEM-related fields, and 23% in professional certificate programmes. Learning habits reflect a younger, mobile-first generation, with 41% of users accessing courses via mobile, and a median learner age of the employer side, demand is rising sharply for expertise in AI and machine learning (up 139%) and customer service (up 96%), while top learner skills in the UAE ranged from corporate accounting and predictive analytics to emerging technologies and leadership development. The UAE's broader economic and policy frameworks are a key driver of this momentum, the report said, pointing out the We the UAE 2031 strategy and workforce development programmes like Nafis, which 'are exceeding private-sector employment targets' and form part of a national vision for a tech-enabled society centred around innovation and competencies. Building on this foundation, the country deployed a wider set of strategies, such as UAE Vision 2030, the Strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Emirates Blockchain Strategy, and the UAE Centennial 2071, to support the growth and prosperity of future-focused business sectors.

US announces pick for NATO's next Supreme Allied Commander
President Donald Trump's administration announced on Thursday its nomination for the next top US general in Europe and said the US military officer would also assume the traditional role of Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Trump's decision to nominate US Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich to both roles, which was first reported by Reuters, will relieve European NATO allies and even some of Trump's fellow Republicans amid concerns about a retrenchment in American military leadership of NATO. Grynkewich must be confirmed by the US Senate. The position of SACEUR, which oversees all NATO operations in Europe, has been filled by a US general since its creation after World War Two. US Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower became the alliance's first SACEUR in 1951. Still, since taking office in January, Trump's administration has pressured NATO allies to ramp up their defense spending, saying Europe should be primarily responsible for defense on the European continent. Trump has also said he wants NATO allies to boost investment in defence to 5 per cent of gross domestic product, up from the current target of 2 per cent. Speaking at NATO headquarters earlier on Thursday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said he was confident that members of the NATO alliance would agree to a major boost in defense spending. No country is yet at 5 per cent, not even the US, but Hegseth said there was progress on agreeing to the target. "I'm very encouraged by what we heard in there," Hegseth said after a morning meeting of NATO defense ministers on Thursday in Brussels. "Countries in there are well exceeding 2 per cent and we think very close, almost near consensus, on a 5 per cent commitment to NATO." Grynkewich, who is now the director for operations at the US military's Joint Staff, would succeed Army General Christopher Cavoli, who has been in the role since shortly after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, helping oversee billions of dollars in U.S. security assistance to Kyiv.
