Melbourne Storm leave Indigenous elder ‘heartbroken' after cancelling Welcome to Country

The Guardian26-04-2025
Melbourne Storm are under fire after being accused of cancelling a Welcome to Country at its Anzac Day NRL match at the last minute, leaving an Aboriginal elder 'broken-hearted'.
Wurundjeri elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin said she was informed by the club on Friday afternoon that she was no longer required to address the crowd before the match at AAMI Park.
The Storm held its annual Anzac Day commemorations before the clash with South Sydney, kicking off at 8.10pm.
The cancellation came after several people interrupted the Welcome to Country at a Melbourne dawn service.
Murphy, who has performed the Welcome to Country at Melbourne events for many years, said the Storm then reversed its position, apologised, and asked her to continue with her ceremony as originally planned.
Two First Nations groups were also scheduled to perform, but after the confusion they all decided to cancel their performances.
'We were all just dumbfounded,' Aunty Joy told Nine. 'We would dearly love to be out there, but they've broken our hearts.
'We want to rebuild our relationship. We want to make them [realise] that this was wrong, hurtful, deceitful and tokenistic.'
Kathleen Terrick, one of the dancers who were set to perform during the pre-match ceremony, backed the decision to cancel their show.
'When it comes to our elders, we are not going to stand by and let our elders be disrespected,' Terrick told ABC News.
The Storm later released a statement blaming a 'miscommunication' for the cancellation.

'There was a miscommunication of expectations regarding the use [of] Welcome to Country at Melbourne Storm events throughout the year,' the club said.
'We acknowledge and accept the timing and miscommunication was not ideal and we have spoken to the groups concerned this afternoon.'
Storm coach Craig Bellamy said after the game he 'didn't know anything about that'.
'That's the first I've heard of that,' Bellamy said after the Storm beat Rabbitohs 24-16.
The pre-match Anzac Day ceremony, including the Welcome to Country, was performed without a hitch earlier in the day at the MCG as Collingwood faced Essendon in their traditional AFL clash.

Owners remove £195,000 Grade 2-winning horse from Gordon Elliott's yard with his blessing and send to his protege

GORDON ELLIOTT has given his blessing to a £195,000 Grade 2-winning superstar being removed from his yard - and sent to his protege. The legendary Irish handler believes a change of scenery at Olly Murphy's Warren Chase stables in Warwickshire could spark him back into life. 2 American Mike, who is owned by Noel and Valerie Moran's Bective Stud, has some amazing back form but hasn't quite hit the heights expected. He beat subsequent Ryanair winner Fact To File by more than three lengths on chase debut. And he got the better of this year's Grand National hero Nick Rockett in a 3m chase on heavy at Navan in February 2024. But the eight-year-old son of Mahler hasn't won since - finishing in the places only once from seven further runs. Elliott thinks the time is right to send him to Bet365 Gold Cup-winning trainer Murphy, his former assistant, to work his magic. Murphy has been busy in the horse transfer market this summer. He has acquired Cormac Farrell's recent Galway Listed hurdle winner Sticktotheplan. And . Both of those come loaded with potential, while the goal with American Mike is to bring him back to his former glory. Murphy told Racing TV's Josh Stacey: "He's been a horse who hasn't quite reached the expectations as a novice it looked like he might. "I am just starting to get to know him. "Gordon filled me in about him and it was actually Gordon who said the change of scenery would do him good. "I'm very lucky to have a horse like him and hopefully he can be competitive in some handicap chases. "We're working as a team. Owners Noel and Valerie Moran who sponsor Gordon's yard are also good supporters of me. "Hopefully just a change of scenery will spark a small bit of a revival. "Albeit he has some good form from last season so it's not like he's completely gone off the face of the earth. "We're not just trying to find something that was there three years ago, he has got recent form as well." . Remember to gamble responsibly

Cup win 'very important' in Cardiff's journey

Brian Barry-Murphy says Cardiff City's win over Swindon Town in the EFL Cup was "very important" as his side continue to impress in the early stages of the manager's from Welsh duo Cian Ashford and Rubin Colwill earned the Bluebirds a 2-1 victory over Ian Holloway's side in the Welsh capital as Cardiff progressed into the second round of the competition."I'm really pleased. It means a lot to me to get through to the next round and see who we could possibly take on," Barry-Murphy said."To win tonight was very important and we treated the game very seriously. I thought that reflected in our performance, so I was happy."Barry-Murphy kept faith with six players from the side that started the drab 0-0 draw with Port Vale five days the Irishman says his unbeaten side can continue to improve as his players have more time to adapt to his methods."We're in the very early stages of working together. We've only trained for 25 days so that's a very small period of time in terms of trying to build something together," added Barry-Murphy."The players who came in came in based on how well they've trained and how they've been to starting the other games."We felt it was as competitive as the team at Port Vale, and luckily for us the performance, luckily for us, was better than Port Vale."I'm aware of so much more that we need to do as we move forward, but if we have that patience and understanding of where the players are at, I think we'll be fine."

Cardiff City star in talks to leave club as Barry-Murphy 'confident' on signings

Cardiff City star in talks to leave club as Barry-Murphy 'confident' on signings The Bluebirds player looks close to leaving with incomings expected to ramp up in the final weeks of the window Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency) Jesper Daland is in talks to leave Cardiff City, head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has confirmed. ‌ The Norwegian defender joined from Cercle Brugge last year and endured a mixed first campaign in south Wales. However, he has now been left out of the last two City squads - including the 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Swindon Town on Tuesday evening - prompting supporters to question whether he is on the verge of leaving. ‌ And Barry-Murphy has confirmed that Daland is holding conversations with other clubs over a potential exit, however the Irishman said he was unsure as to whether any departure would be permanent or a loan. ‌ "Jesper's in conversations with other clubs, so he's not available," Barry-Murphy said. I don't think it's right for me to say. "Nathan (Trott) played, Matt Turner was on the bench. Ethan and Jack trained yesterday. And Jesper trained brilliantly yesterday. Cardiff have signed only one player so far this summer, goalkeeper Trott. With Daland in discussions to leave the club, a centre-back will likely be high on the agenda. When asked about incomings, the head coach said: "We want to be a very dynamic team who excites the supporters, so the players that we bring into the club will possess those qualities to bring the game that we want to show to life. ‌ "Even in Nathan Trott, he's a very dynamic keeper who will improve a lot as we progress. And those traits will be evident in every player where we managed to be in to the club." Barry-Murphy was coy on a timeline, however he insisted signings would be made before the September 1 deadline. "I'm confident," he said. "I think it's wrong of me to say imminent or days because I just don't know. And my experience in this month of the window says the closer I think we are to one, the further away we are! Article continues below "And I think it's unfair to supporters. We'll definitely bring players in before they're in the window, but I don't know when."
