Mainfreight full year net profit up nearly a third on previous year to $274.3 million

Transport heavyweight Mainfreight full year net profit is up by nearly a third on the year earlier, with the Australian business the largest generator of revenue and profits.
"We felt in certain parts of the business we could have been better," Mainfreight managing director Don Braid said, noting the underlying profit was slightly down on the year earlier by 3 percent.
Key numbers for the 12 months ended March compared with a year ago:
Braid said the outlook for the current year was uncertain, though the pause in the imposition of United States tariffs had seen an increase in bookings and volumes, along with an increase in sea freight costs.
He said space availability was becoming tight with American businesses rushing to get products into warehouses and retail shelves.
While that was seeing revenue rise, he said the outlook was uncertain.
"It's all very well to have a small surge in volumes, but that is not of that much interest. What we're interested in is long term certainty, so that we have a steady trade," Braid said, adding that the uncertainty was affecting all global markets.
He said the near-term focus for Mainfreight was to look after its customers.
"The beauty of being in 27 different countries is that if the trade lanes change, if companies begin to think of of other countries other than the USA, then from an international shipping perspective we're able to assist their customers.
"But at the same time it's business as usual across supply chains in the five regions we're in and we're working hard to win market share and provide an improving performance."
Sales revenue increased in all five regions Mainfreight operated and its across transport, warehousing and air and ocean divisions. However, Asia, the Americas and New Zealand saw profits decline.
Braid said economic uncertainty continued to affect the New Zealand market.
"I think at the small end of town, whilst we might have seen an increase in dairy and the kiwifruit harvest was pretty healthy ... at the other end of the spectrum, I think people are still seeing it as a tough environment.
"We're lucky enough to have won more market share then we've lost and we continue to build the business."
Mainfreight was continuing to invest in new facilities in preparation for when the New Zealand economy began to improve, he said.
"However, the likelihood of slower economic growth, coupled with the considerable investments made in the past year, particularly in New Zealand, will result in a more cautionary approach to property development and capital expenditure."
However, he said there had been a small improvement in domestic freight movements over the past couple of weeks.
"How that looks as we get into the rest of the year, we're uncertain and I think that's our biggest problem is that we just don't have any certainty about how the economy will perform over the next six to 12 months."
Mainfreight would also pay staff bonuses of $30.5m to be shared with team members in branches who had contributed satisfactory profits in Australia, Asia and Europe regions.
"Unfortunately, this year's performance will result in our people in New Zealand and the Americas regions foregoing bonuses as a consequence of contributing less profit than the year prior," Braid said.

It has signed up to buy the parent holding company of Arizona firm Geost for $460 million. Geost develops electro-optical and infrared technology used in missile warning and tracking, surveillance and reconnaissance, Rocket Lab said. These were "core capabilities" for the likes of the Pentagon's proposed constellation of low-orbit satellites, as well as for the Dome, the company said on its website . The aim of the Dome is to create a shield that can shoot down all sorts of missiles including nuclear warheads. US President Donald Trump last week put the cost of the Golden Dome at $300 billion, but many analysts say it will cost much more. Critics have said it risks undermining global security by fuelling a new arms face involving space. Sir Peter Beck said the Geost deal positioned Rocket Lab as a "disruptive prime" - meaning major - contractor to US national security. "Rocket Lab was founded to disrupt the traditional space industry and we're doing just that," Beck said on the firm's website. "By bringing these mission critical payloads in-house, Rocket Lab enhances its ability to rapidly deliver integrated spacecraft systems purpose-built for US national security," the website said. The acquisition to be settled later this year would take the company's staff numbers to 2600 in factories and at test and launch sites in New Zealand, California, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, New Mexico, Toronto and Arizona. Photo: Supplied / Pacific Edge Cancer testing company Pacific Edge has posted another sizeable full year loss and will tap investors for more capital as it battles to regain federal health insurance coverage in its key US market. Key numbers for the 12 months ended March compared with a year ago: The Dunedin based company held its loss steady as it cut costs and looked to expand sales of its bladder testing technology into new sectors and markets. The company has been hit recently by losing coverage for its test under the US Medicare health insurance scheme , which accounted for about 60 percent of revenue. It has been fighting for the past two years to retain coverage, and is reapplying for coverage supported by new clinical evidence and acceptance of its testing in medical guidelines of professional bodies. "The robust evidence emerging from our clinical evidence programme is shifting clinical sentiment towards the broader adoption of our tests in the US and further afield. We are determined not to lose that momentum," chairperson Chris Gallaher said. He said the company planned to raise $20m by selling new shares, with selected investors to be offered $15m and the balance to be offered to existing shareholders. The new shares would be offered at 10 cents each compared to its last traded price of 8 cents. "The new capital will support the company and its operations for over 12 months, giving Pacific Edge the ability to grow testing volume as we work to regain coverage." The company has staked its future to the US market but said it would also look to extend the use of its tests in New Zealand as well as seeking new markets Latin America and South-East Asia. The ruling came a day after a trade court had ruled Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing the duties and had ordered an immediate block on them. The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington's order provided no opinion or reasoning but directed the plaintiffs in the case to respond by 5 June and the administration by 9 June. Wednesday's surprise ruling by the US Court of International Trade had threatened to kill or at least delay the imposition of Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs on most US trading partners, as well as import levies on goods from Canada, Mexico and China related to his accusation that the three countries were facilitating the flow of fentanyl.
