El-Sisi congratulates Al-Sharaa for assuming Syria interim presidency - Foreign Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly31-01-2025
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi congratulated Friday Ahmed Al-Sharaa on assuming the Syrian presidency during its transitional phase.
'I wish him success in achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people for further progress and prosperity,' El-Sisi wrote on his official Facebook page.
On Wednesday, the Military Operations Administration that ruled Syria after the ouster of President Bashar Al-Assad installed Al-Sharaa as Syria's president in the transitional phase.
Since the fall of al-Assad's regime on 8 December, Egypt has consistently reaffirmed its full support for the Syrian people, expressing hope that the political transition in Syria will be inclusive and entirely led by Syrians, free from external interference.
In late December, Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held his first phone call with Syria's interim foreign minister, reaffirming Egypt's full support for the Syrian people and their legitimate aspirations.
Syria has suffered 13 years of civil war, killing over 500,000 people, displaced millions, and rendered half of the country's hospitals non-operational.
Approximately 1.5 million Syrians reside in Egypt, representing the second-largest foreign community in the country after Sudanese nationals.

Egypt, European Bank to launch €10 Million projects account

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has issued a new presidential decree, #146 of 2025, approving a cooperation agreement to establish a Projects Account in Egypt between the Egyptian government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with a capital of 10 million Euros. The House of Representatives, headed by Counselor Hanafi al-Gebali, had approved the presidential decree during its general session on May 11. The agreement aims to create the 'Projects Account in Egypt' with the goal of accelerating the launch of investment projects by financing feasibility studies and technical consultations. It also seeks to reduce the time it takes to begin implementing public-private partnership (PPP) projects from one year to two months. The project is expected to attract both local and foreign investment through simplified procedures and technical support.

S.Sudan hosts Israeli deputy FM but denies Gaza displacement reports - War on Gaza

South Sudan on Wednesday said that Israel's deputy foreign minister had visited for talks, after reports of plans to displace Palestinians from the war-torn Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he would encourage Palestinians to relocate from Gaza and that his government was talking to a number of potential host countries to displace Gaza's population. South Sudan, which is said to be one of the host countries, announced that Sharren Haskel had visited in what it called "the highest-level engagement from an Israeli official to South Sudan thus far". According to a statement, Foreign Minister Semaya Kumba held "a fruitful bilateral dialogue" with Haskel that touched on "the evolving circumstances within the State of Israel", without elaborating. "Both parties expressed a resolute commitment to advancing stronger bilateral and multilateral cooperation moving forward," it added. The office of President Salva Kiir said he met with Haskel for "high-level" talks about enhancing cooperation in a number of sectors. "In a bid to attract foreign investment, the government has offered Israel new opportunities in the oil and gas industry, minerals, agriculture and water resource management," a statement read. Haskel said the visit was "a reflection of friendship and solidarity between the two nations" and announced a new aid package of food supplies and medical equipment, it added. A previous statement from the government in Juba refuted media reports that it was in discussion with Israel about displacing Palestinians from Gaza to South Sudan, calling them "baseless". Impoverished South Sudan -- the world's youngest country -- has been plagued by insecurity and instability since its independence in 2011. This year, the country saw months of clashes between forces loyal to Kiir and those backing First Vice President Riek Machar. The arrest of Machar in March fuelled fears of a return to civil war, nearly seven years after the end of bloody fighting between supporters of the two men that led to around 400,000 deaths between 2013 and 2018. * This story was edited by Ahram Online. Sisi: Uganda is Egypt's key partner in southern Nile Basin

CAIRO, Aug 12 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has stressed that Uganda is a key partner of Egypt in the southern Nile Basin region, expressing Cairo's aspiration that the African country can be among the primary beneficiaries of the Egyptian mechanisms designated to support development in Nile Basin countries. President Sisi's remarks came during his speech at the Egypt-Uganda Businessmen Forum, which was inaugurated Tuesday in the presence of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. Sisi also lauded the organization of the forum, which brings together leading business figures from both countries. He noted that the forum reflects the depth of the extended bonds of friendship between Egypt and Uganda, as well as their firm determination to expand partnerships across various fields of cooperation for the benefit of their peoples. Egypt looks forward to enhancing economic cooperation and increasing the volume of trade exchange, which reached about $133 million in 2024, and expected to double this figure, President Sisi said. He underscored the need for accelerating the formation of the Egyptian-Ugandan Joint Business Council, increasing the exchange of business delegations, and encouraging companies in both countries to boost their exports — particularly in sectors like agriculture, pharmaceuticals, building materials, electrical appliances, and other products that meet the needs of markets. The president noted that the forum is a practical step toward translating the strength of bilateral political relations into concrete projects that benefit Egyptian and Ugandan peoples, based on a win-win approach. Sisi said the private sector and entrepreneurs in both countries should be the driving force of partnership in economy, trade, and investment, while the role of governments is to provide the legal and political frameworks that enable these partnerships to thrive. President Sisi reaffirmed that Egypt, as always, extends its hand to Uganda — as a partner, brother, and friend — within a framework of mutual respect and shared interests. (MENA)
