SOHR: Nearly 10,000 people killed since al-Assad's fall
Shafaq News – Damascus Nearly 10,000 people have been killed across Syria following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad's government, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The watchdog documented 9,889 deaths, including 7,449 civilians—among them 396 children and 541 women—attributing widespread violations to both pro-government forces and armed non-state groups. SOHR said that March 2025 was the deadliest month, with 2,644 deaths, most occurring during mass executions and attacks on security checkpoints in Syria's coastal region. The group reported 1,726 executions that month alone. Another major spike came in late 2024, when 2,354 people—mostly civilians—were killed in similar violence in the same region. In July 2025, heavy fighting in the southern province of Suwayda left 1,733 people dead. Over the eight-month period, the Observatory recorded more than 2,500 field executions, along with intensified shelling, targeted killings, and unexplained deaths. These included 866 people killed by forces under the Military Operations Administration, a coalition of security units now controlling parts of Syria, and 590 shot by unidentified gunmen. At least 1,750 deaths occurred under unverifiable circumstances, while landmines and unexploded ordnance killed 571 people. SOHR also confirmed 50 torture-related deaths in detention facilities, most under the Military Operations Administration, with others occurring in the custody of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Non-civilian casualties over the same period totaled 2,440, including fighters from pro-government units, opposition factions, local militias, Kurdish forces, Iranian-backed groups, Turkish troops, and ISIS remnants. The group criticized what it described as Syria's entrenched culture of impunity, citing the 'failure' of a government-appointed Fact-Finding Committee to publish findings on the coastal massacres. It also accused state media of discrediting rights monitors while fueling sectarian tensions.

El-Sisi congratulates Al-Sharaa for assuming Syria interim presidency - Foreign Affairs
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi congratulated Friday Ahmed Al-Sharaa on assuming the Syrian presidency during its transitional phase. 'I wish him success in achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people for further progress and prosperity,' El-Sisi wrote on his official Facebook page. On Wednesday, the Military Operations Administration that ruled Syria after the ouster of President Bashar Al-Assad installed Al-Sharaa as Syria's president in the transitional phase. Since the fall of al-Assad's regime on 8 December, Egypt has consistently reaffirmed its full support for the Syrian people, expressing hope that the political transition in Syria will be inclusive and entirely led by Syrians, free from external interference. In late December, Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held his first phone call with Syria's interim foreign minister, reaffirming Egypt's full support for the Syrian people and their legitimate aspirations. Syria has suffered 13 years of civil war, killing over 500,000 people, displaced millions, and rendered half of the country's hospitals non-operational. Approximately 1.5 million Syrians reside in Egypt, representing the second-largest foreign community in the country after Sudanese nationals. Short link:

Syrians celebrate al-Sharaa's appointment as transitional president
Celebrations broke out across Syria on Wednesday evening following the appointment of Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of the new administration in Syria, as the country's transitional president. In Damascus, Umayyad Square, the largest square in the capital, saw a large gathering celebrating al-Sharaa's appointment. Attendees waved Syrian flags and chanted slogans supporting al-Sharaa and opposing the long-time rule of toppled dictator Bashar al-Assad. "Hundreds of cars roamed the neighbourhoods of the capital, waving the Syrian flag in a joyful and celebratory atmosphere," said Ziad Ali, who participated in a car parade in Damascus. "Everyone in the neighbourhood exchanged congratulations on social media, and hundreds came out to Baramkeh Square to celebrate, performing dabke dances despite the cold weather," Ali, a resident of Baramkeh, told dpa. In the town of Jdeidet Artouz, west of Damascus, hundreds of residents took to the streets, both on foot and in cars, following the announcement by the Military Operations Administration of al-Sharaa's appointment as transitional president. Mustafa Abdullah, from Raqqa province, carried the Syrian flag while chanting, "Raise your head high, you're a free Syrian – we'll crush them, crush the Assad family!" Abdullah told dpa: "We urge President al-Sharaa to work on liberating the provinces of Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor, and expelling the SDF forces occupying the Jazira region. Celebrations are also underway in these areas, as they are part of Syria, and we will never accept their division." In the evening, roads looked deserted in Damascus as Syrians eagerly awaited the "victory speech" from al-Sharaa. Judge Abdullah Saad, speaking from Aleppo, said, "Today's decisions to dissolve the army, security agencies, and parliament, and suspend the 2012 Constitution, are natural outcomes of the revolutionary factions taking control of governance." Saad told dpa: "The celebrations currently sweeping all Syrian cities are a testament to the legitimacy given to Ahmed al-Sharaa. This aligns with the decision of revolutionary faction leaders to appoint al-Sharaa as president, from whom we expect significant contributions to serve the country."
