LABUAN (June 25): Despite sharing similar geographies and economic aspirations, Sarawak and Sabah have taken markedly different paths in infrastructure development.
Former President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Malaysia and vice-president of CILT International for Southeast Asia, Datuk Dr Ramli Amir, said Sarawak has emerged as a model of self-reliance, independently funding large-scale infrastructure projects.
At the same time, Sabah remains heavily dependent on federal allocations, resulting in development delays and fragmented logistics.
'Over the past decade, Sarawak has allocated billions of ringgit toward roads, bridges, ports, and industrial zones, all without resorting to debt or federal funding.
'The state government's fiscal discipline and adoption of innovative financing, including an alternative funding model introduced in 2019, have enabled accelerated infrastructure rollout.
'Sarawak's commitment to strategic financial management is exemplified by the RM11 billion invested in ten bridges, executed without external borrowing,' he said in a statement to Bernama today.
Ramli said the decision to replace the Infrastructure Development Trust Fund with a unified modern financing mechanism highlights the state's focus on project efficiency and accountability.
He added that political stability and a long-term vision have also enabled Sarawak to maintain consistent development through initiatives such as the Coastal Road Network, the Second Trunk Road, deep-seaports, and free industrial zones.
'In contrast, Sabah faces persistent infrastructure gaps, largely due to its dependence on federal grants. Although the state has gained autonomy for projects below RM50 million, larger infrastructure ventures remain subject to federal processes.
'This has resulted in underinvestment and chronic delays, such as those plaguing the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway,' Ramli said.
He noted that the logistics sector in Sabah is particularly strained, with transport costs reportedly 30 to 50 per cent higher than in Peninsular Malaysia, and public transport penetration in Kota Kinabalu lags far behind Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, many rural areas still lack basic infrastructure, and poor connectivity continues to hinder economic growth.
Sabah's reliance on fragmented and reactive infrastructure planning has limited its potential for sustainable economic transformation.
Commenting on the contrast, Ramli said Sarawak's success is rooted in its institutional leadership and fiscal autonomy.
'The state's ability to independently manage and finance its infrastructure agenda should serve as a wake-up call for Sabah to strengthen its internal capacities,' he said. – Bernama infrastructure innovative Ramli Amir sabah sarawak transport

"Malaysia's Gen Alpha is growing up in a digital-first environment, where mobile wallets are already the norm -- driving one of the highest digital wallet penetration rates in Southeast Asia at around 40 per cent," it said. The findings are based on a global research study conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Mastercard which surveyed 19,302 consumers across five global regions, including 9,131 consumers in Asia Pacific and 1,010 in Malaysia. According to the survey, parents of Malaysian Gen Alpha anticipated their children will grow up in a digital-first financial world -- one where they may never own a physical wallet or carry cash. With the rise of digital wallets, mobile payments and virtual accounts, Malaysian families are calling for smarter, future-ready solutions that will set their children up for success, it said. Mastercard Malaysia and Brunei country manager Beena Pothen said the findings highlight the remarkable pace at which Malaysia's youngest generation is embracing digital finance. With 97 per cent of Gen Alpha children already accessing financial accounts and nearly half using digital wallets, it is clear that the children are growing up with a strong digital-first mindset, she said. "This is a true reflection of Malaysia's impressive momentum in digital transformation. Mastercard is supporting this progress by driving innovation that delivers secure, seamless, and meaningful payment experiences - not just for Gen Alpha children, but for their parents as well. Ringgit likely to trade cautiously next week amid US tariff concerns

Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is anticipated to trade cautiously against the dollar next week as investors monitor external developments, particularly regarding United States tariffs. In a research note, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd stated that the ringgit should find support from domestic economic stability and a softer US dollar, likely holding near current levels. "President Donald Trump's proposed chips and pharmaceutical tariffs will likely dampen sentiment in risk assets. Investors are also tracking pressure on BRICS and signs of strain in the US-China trade detente. "Trump's rapid-fire policy moves and media headlines continue to drive market uncertainty," it said. As such, the research firm said the ringgit has traded higher this week, hovering within the range of 4.23-4.24 after a weaker-than-expected US jobs report pulled the greenback lower. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2420/2480 versus 4.2750/2815 previously. However, the local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. On Friday, the ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8720/8763 from 2.8407/8452 the previous week, declined against the British pound to 5.7034/7114 from 5.6208/6293 and eased versus the euro to 4.9381/9451 from 4.8752/8826. The ringgit also trended lower against Asean currencies. The local note slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3014/3064 from 3.2907/2960 at the end of last week, inched down versus the Thai baht to 13.1173/1419 from 13.0058/0319, slid versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.3/260.8 from 258.8/259.4 and edged down against the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.44 from 7.35/7.36 in the preceding week.
