Efforts to boost TVET capacity, STEM proficiency key to strengthening Malaysia's economic resilience
KANGAR: Efforts to improve the capacity of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and mastery of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among youth are needed to build the domestic economic resilience of Malaysia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the fields of engineering, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital, as well as approaches to keep up with current economic developments, must be prioritised to enable Malaysia to have the ability to achieve this goal.
"So God willing, we will build domestic economic resilience...enter the field of engineering, AI, digital and follow economic developments, and not be dragged into issues that can break and weaken us, such as busy to listening to quarrelsome talks, which spew hatred.
"We have the strength to build this country, in 10 years, 20 years, where do we want to take the people and children, think about the future, do we want to quarrel about race or interpretation or raise our dignity so that together we can become part of a developed country and be strong to face the current tests," he said.
The Prime Minister said this when speaking at the Perlis State-Level Aidilfitri Madani 2025 Celebration at Dataran Lok 9, Kuala Perlis near here today.
Also present were the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid.
Also attending the ceremony were the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

"For Perlis' annual grants in 2022, it was RM168.4 million, 2023 (RM182.3 million) and 2024 (RM210.6 million), which means Perlis is among the highest with a 25 per cent increase," he said.
Regarding the Basic Rahmah Contribution Programme (SARA) in Perlis, he said the beneficiaries of the programme had increased to 62,292 people as of April compared to 25,682 recipients last year.
Earlier, the Prime Minister chaired a Special State Development Meeting with the Menteri Besar of Perlis and the leadership of the state and federal governments at the Perlis State Development Office here.
Through his Facebook post, Anwar, among others, said that the government machinery at all levels must immediately expedite the approval and implementation of projects without being hampered by bureaucratic red tape.
"I have instructed agencies to tighten monitoring of projects and not hesitate to punish those who delay them to the detriment of the people.
"The Perlis Menteri Besar then presented several state development priorities, covering basic infrastructure such as roads, flood control, tourism, ports and education," he said.
Anwar said among the projects raised were the development of Sanglang port, the reconstruction of Sekolah Kebangsaan Chuping, the completion of the abandoned Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Perlis project and the Chuping flood reservoir upgrade project.
He said that, considering their importance, he had ordered the reconstruction of Sekolah Kebangsaan Chuping to begin this year.
Meanwhile, the Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Perlis project, which has been abandoned for the past 12 years, must be immediately handed over to a capable government-linked company.
"The federal and state government machinery must be bold enough to think outside the old framework, break the deadlock, expedite the resolution of the people's problems, and build a resilient economic foundation, thereby raising the dignity of both the people and the country on the world stage," he said.

Malaysia supports June 14 Thailand-Cambodia border talks, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had spoken with his Thai and Cambodian counterparts and supported the measures they have taken. PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries. Anwar said that Malaysia, as the Asean chair in 2025, is prepared to follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia that is slated for June 14, in addition to providing the cooperation required in the talks. 'I spoke with both the prime ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia) and they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. 'I'm ready to participate and provide the cooperation required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media after performing the solat sunat Aidiladha with about 15,000 congregants at Masjid Putra here today. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province which borders Cambodia's Preah Vihear province. A Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed in the incident. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Following the tension, the two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on June 14. This is expected to be a crucial step towards a peaceful long-term resolution between the two Asean neighbours.

PM Anwar seeks stronger ASEAN-GCC push to end Gaza atrocities
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger cooperation between ASEAN countries and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to end Israel's atrocities in Gaza. Speaking to reporters after performing Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Putra here today, Anwar said that regional and international collective efforts are crucial to ending the prolonged conflict and the suffering of the Palestinian people. 'We've conveyed our stance (through a Wisma Putra statement), but this cannot be the effort of just one country. As we saw in recent engagements with Gulf nations, there is a shared consensus. 'So ASEAN, the Gulf states, and a few other countries can come together to provide a clear message and exert strong pressure on the world to put a stop to it (Israel's brutality),' he said. He was responding to the United States' use of its veto power on a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid.

Asean leaders to deliberate Pakistan's bid for full dialogue partner status, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — Pakistan's bid to become a full dialogue partner with Asean will be discussed with leaders of the regional grouping, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'It will be brought up for discussion at the Asean leaders' conference,' he told reporters briefly after performing the Aidiladha prayers at the Putra Mosque here today. He said this when asked to comment on Pakistan's renewed efforts to elevate its partnership status with Asean. Yesterday, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Malaysia Syed Ahsan Raza Shah reportedly said that Islamabad is renewing its push to become a full dialogue partner, reflecting the country's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and deepening engagement with the bloc. Pakistan, which became Asean's first sectoral dialogue partner in 1993, has consistently valued its cooperation with the regional grouping and aims to further expand those ties. In October last year, Anwar was quoted as saying that Malaysia fully supported Pakistan's efforts to become a full dialogue partner of Asean. Meanwhile, when asked about Pakistan welcoming his offer to mediate in the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, Anwar said Malaysia only hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'I have no role to play, I'm simply offering my opinion,' he said. Earlier, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, performed the Aidiladha prayers alongside nearly 15,000 congregants at the Putra Mosque. Anwar, dressed in a light blue baju Melayu, arrived at 7.50 am and was greeted by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan. The Prime Minister also joined the congregation reciting the takbir raya before performing the Aidiladha prayers, led by the Grand Imam of the Putra Mosque Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali. He then listened to the Aidiladha sermon titled 'Korban dan Semangat Kebersamaan', which emphasised the importance of intention, proper conduct, and sincerity in performing the sacrificial ritual. Before departing, Anwar took time to mingle and shake hands with members of the congregation. — Bernama
