(Reuters) -Honda rider Luca Marini suffered a nasty crash while testing in Japan, sustaining injuries to his hip, knee, chest and shoulder as well as a collapsed lung, the Japanese team said on Wednesday.
Marini had travelled to the Suzuka Circuit after the British Grand Prix that was held over the weekend and the Italian was testing Honda's bike for the Suzuka 8-Hour endurance race when he crashed heavily on the second day of testing.
"Suffering from a dislocated left hip, damage to the ligaments in his left knee, fractures in the sternum and left collarbone and a right-sided pneumothorax, Marini was transferred to local hospital and stabilised," Honda said.
"Marini will remain under observation in Japan until he is deemed fit to travel."
Honda did not give a timeline for Marini's return. The 27-year-old is 13th in the MotoGP riders' standings after seven rounds.
The next MotoGP round is the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain on June 7-8.

Tennis-French Open organisers spoil Djokovic's football plans
Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - May 29, 2025 Serbia's Novak Djokovic in action during his second round match against France's Corentin Moutet REUTERS/Lisi Niesner (Reuters) -French Open organisers turned a deaf ear to Novak Djokovic's hint that the former world number one would rather watch the Champions League final than play in the French Open night session on Saturday. Serbia's Djokovic has been scheduled to play the pick-of-the-day third-round match on Court Philippe Chatrier against Austrian Filip Misolic, starting not before 2015 local time. Paris is set to have an electric atmosphere on Saturday night as Paris St Germain take on Inter Milan in Munich with the kickoff scheduled for 2100 local time. Djokovic had made clear he was interested in watching the game. "It's going to be PSG that I will support. I will definitely watch it if I'm not playing night session. Yeah, that will be nice. FYI, Roland Garros schedule... " Djokovic said with a smile on Thursday. "The fact that there's the Champions League final won't change much for us anyway," tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said earlier on Friday. "We're trying to do our utmost for the tournament. We are very happy with PSG. We're trying to do our job organizing this tournament. 15,000 people will come over here to watch tennis tomorrow. We'll try to give them the best possible match." Djokovic will surely be eager to make it the quickest possible match. (Reporting by Julien Pretot; Editing by Christian Radnedge)

Tennis-Sabalenka, Zheng sizzle on sunny day at French Open
Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - May 30, 2025 Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka in action during her third round match against Serbia's Olga Danilovic REUTERS/Lisi Niesner PARIS (Reuters) -World number one Aryna Sabalenka and Paris Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen charged into the fourth round of the French Open but Italian Lorenzo Musetti was made to work a little harder to progress in glorious sunshine on Friday. Sabalenka experienced late resistance in her meeting with unseeded Olga Danilovic but won 6-2 6-3 and kept alive her hopes of winning a maiden Roland Garros trophy after major successes on the hardcourts of the Australian Open and U.S. Open. The three-time Grand Slam champion looked in ruthless form while racing ahead 5-0 but Danilovic avoided the bagel by taking the sixth game on serve and pulled a break back to give herself a small chance to come back. The resurgence did not last, however, as Sabalenka closed out the opening set with another break of serve and withstood another stern test in the second set to beat her 34th-ranked opponent from Serbia. "I'm super happy with the win," Sabalenka said. "Olga's a fighter and I knew it was going to be a fight. I enjoyed playing against her, she played like a top 10 player and I'm sure soon she will be in the top 10. "I enjoyed our battle and I'm super happy to be through this difficult match." Zheng, who won her biggest title at last year's Olympics, continued her good form on Parisian clay as the Chinese eighth seed moved into the second week by beating Grand Slam debutant Victoria Mboko 6-3 6-4 at a sunbathed Court Simonne Mathieu. That match was halted briefly when the 18-year-old Mboko was down 5-3 in the second set as a fan needed medical attention but Zheng ensured her momentum was not affected when play resumed and quickly completed the victory over the Canadian. Former semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova required treatment for a blister on her right hand before the American secured a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson to reach the last 16 of the major where she announced herself in 2019. Anisimova, seeded 16th, takes on Sabalenka in the next round aiming to improve her 5-2 win-loss record against the Belarusian top seed. "We're both big hitters, so I'm sure we're going to be going at it back and forth," Anisimova said. "Obviously she's one of the best right now. She's number one. I feel it's always a good matchup. I really enjoy the fight and the challenge she brings on. "I'm just looking forward to it. Hopefully I can bring my 'A' game. Hopefully it'll be a good match." Liudmila Samsonova will also expect to be fully tested when she meets Zheng after seeing off Dayana Yastremska 6-2 6-3. Reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek resumes her bid for a fifth title in Paris when the fifth seed plays Jaqueline Cristian on Court Suzanne Lenglen while men's champion Carlos Alcaraz plays unseeded Damir Dzumhur in the evening. On the men's side, eighth seed Musetti dropped the opening set against Mariano Navone of Argentina before he prevailed 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-2. Motor racing-Norris fastest in first Spanish GP practice
Formula One F1 - Spanish Grand Prix - Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain - May 30, 2025 McLaren's Lando Norris during practice REUTERS/Bruna Casas BARCELONA (Reuters) -McLaren's Lando Norris followed up his victory in Monaco by lapping fastest in first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen ending the session as his closest rival. The Briton, winner last Sunday to close to only three points behind championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri after eight of 24 rounds, set a best time of one minute and 13.718 seconds at the Circuit de Catalunya. Verstappen was 0.367 slower but missed some 20 minutes of the session with mechanics working to change the car's rear suspension. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton -- winner a record-equalling six times in Spain -- was third on the timesheets, 0.378 off the pace and ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc (+0.520) with Piastri fifth (+0.576). The session was the first in which teams used new front wings to meet stricter flex tests introduced for the Spanish weekend, but there was no immediate sign of any significant change. Liam Lawson was sixth fastest for Racing Bulls with Oliver Bearman seventh for Haas, Isack Hadjar eighth for Racing Bull and Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda ninth. Alpine's Pierre Gasly completed the top 10. Mercedes, McLaren's closest rivals in the constructors' standings, had George Russell 11th and Kimi Antonelli 18th. The session featured two young drivers gaining experience, with Frenchman Victor Martins replacing Alex Albon at Williams and Japanese Ryo Hirakawa for Esteban Ocon at Haas.
