EU Accuses Temu of Selling Illegal Products
The European Commission has
issued
preliminary findings accusing Chinese e-commerce platform Temu of breaching the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) by failing to prevent the sale of illegal and non-compliant products within the Single Market.
Temu
, which boasts nearly 94 million average monthly users across the EU, is designated as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the DSA. This classification subjects it to enhanced regulatory obligations, including stringent consumer protection measures.
According to a statement released on Monday, the Commission determined that Temu presents a high risk to European consumers, with evidence indicating widespread availability of illegal goods on the platform.
The investigation, formally launched in October, also raised concerns over the platform's business practices, including misleading discounts, fake reviews, lack of transparency regarding third-party sellers, and a design strategy that may exploit addictive user behaviors.
The Commission further emphasized that Temu is failing to comply with the EU's product safety standards, thereby undermining consumer trust and the integrity of the digital Single Market.
Temu has been granted the opportunity to respond to the allegations. However, should the Commission uphold its findings, the company could face penalties of up to 6% of its global annual revenue.
A spokesperson for Temu stated that the company is cooperating fully with EU authorities. No final ruling has yet been made.
The Digital Services Act, which came into force to enhance accountability and consumer protection across major online platforms, represents a cornerstone of the EU's digital governance strategy.

SCZone Chief Lays Foundation for Two New Chinese Textile Projects Worth $55 Million
Taarek Refaat Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony for two new Chinese textile projects in the industrial developer 'TEDA–Egypt' zone in Ain Sokhna, marking a fresh wave of foreign investment into Egypt's manufacturing sector. The projects, with combined investments exceeding $55 million, are set to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, while strengthening Egypt's presence in global textile supply chains. The first project, led by Bridge-Tex, involves the construction of a fully integrated textile complex on a 40,000-square-meter plot. With an investment of over $25 million, the facility will house 18 spinning lines, more than 100 fabric production lines, and six printing and dyeing lines. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce 25 million meters of high-quality fabrics and 105,000 tons of fibers annually, generating around 500 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs. The second project, developed by F-TEX International, will be built on 55,000 square meters with 60 production lines for drawn textured polyester yarn (DTY). The $30 million facility is projected to reach full operational capacity by late 2027, with an annual production target of 130,000 tons and 400 direct jobs, contributing an estimated $150 million in annual export revenues. Gamal El-Din emphasized that these projects reflect growing international investor confidence in the SCZONE and the success of the partnership with TEDA–Egypt. He highlighted ongoing talks with Chinese partners to allocate an additional 10 km² for industrial development, following the near-completion of earlier expansion phases. 'These projects will not only add significant value to the local economy and create jobs, but also enhance Egypt's industrial integration and global supply chain competitiveness,' Gamal El-Din said, noting that SCZONE attracted $8.6 billion in investments across 297 projects over the past three years, including $4.4 billion in the last fiscal year alone. Representatives from both companies highlighted the export-oriented nature of the projects, with 80% of output destined for U.S. and European markets. Bridge-Tex expects annual sales of $120 million, with $100 million in foreign currency inflows, while F-TEX executives framed the project as a symbol of Sino-Egyptian textile cooperation, combining Chinese technology with Egyptian labor to achieve sustainable growth. Islamic Jihad publishes video of Israeli captive held in Gaza - War on Gaza
The armed wing of Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad published a video Thursday of an Israeli-German captive who was abducted to Gaza in October 2023. In the six-minute video, the male hostage, speaking in Hebrew, is seen watching recent news footage of the hunger crisis in Gaza. He identifies himself and pleads with the Israeli government to secure his release. AFP was not immediately able to confirm the authenticity of the video nor the date it was filmed, but was able -- along with several Israeli news outlets -- to identify the captive as Rom Braslavksi, a German-Israeli dual national. Islamic Jihad announced last week that it had lost contact with the captive and repeats this in commentary at the beginning of the latest video, suggesting the images were filmed more than a week ago. A previous video of Braslavski was released on April 16. The footage, distributed by the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, shows the young man watching an Arabic-language television channel broadcasting a report on hunger in Gaza. Israel's war on Gaza has been ongoing since October 2023, but a truce from January 19 to March 17 allowed the return of 33 captives to Israel, eight of them dead, in exchange for the release of approximately 1,800 Palestinians from Israeli jails. Families of the remaning captives - numbered 20-50 including dead or alive - have been pleading with the Israeli government and taking part in protests in Tel-Aviv, asking for a ceasefire and captive exchange, whereby the Israeli government would release detained Palestinians in exchange for the remaining hostages. Negotiations for a ceasefire broke down last week when the American and Israeli delegations withdrew from talks with Hamas. Despite Hamas's stated willingness to continue talks, Witkoff claimed: 'While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith. We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.' Hamas, which has consistently demanded a permanent ceasefire, an end to Israel's blockade, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, said it was surprised by Witkoff's 'negative remarks'. In a separate statement, the group said it had shown responsibility and flexibility during the negotiations and was 'keen to reach an agreement that ends the aggression and the suffering of our people in Gaza.' *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Egypt Foreign Ministry debunks 10 false claims on Rafah crossing, aid delivery into Gaza - Foreign Affairs
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has debunked 10 circulated allegations targeting Egypt regarding the Rafah crossing and the access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. An infographic posted by the foreign ministry on its Facebook page on Thursday listed 10 false and true statements. Claim 1: Egypt has failed to provide aid to the Gaza Strip. Fact: This is a deliberate misrepresentation. Egypt has provided 70 percent of the total humanitarian aid that has entered Gaza since the beginning of the war. Egypt organized an international ministerial conference on the humanitarian response in Gaza in December 2024, with the participation of more than 100 delegations, to support the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people. Egypt received hundreds of injured and sick Palestinians in Egyptian hospitals. Egypt prepared a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of Gaza. It has successfully mobilized support from the vast majority of countries and intends to organize an international conference to mobilize the necessary funding for its implementation. The complete Israeli blockade on Gaza has prevented aid from reaching the strip at a level commensurate with the scale of the humanitarian disaster. Claim 2: Rafah Crossing is a one-sided crossing controlled by Egypt. Fact: It is a false claim. The crossing consists of a gate on the Egyptian side and another gate on the Palestinian side, separated by a road. Crossing the gate on the Egyptian side does not constitute crossing the border between the two sides and does not provide access to the Gaza Strip. Access to the strip requires crossing the distance between the two gates and entering through the Palestinian gate for trucks and individuals. This has been impossible since the Israeli army occupied the Palestinian side of the crossing and completely prevented the passage of individuals and trucks, in addition to targeting the Palestinian side of the crossing militarily more than once. Claim 3: Egypt has closed the Rafah Crossing. Fact: This is a false claim. The crossing has not been closed on the Egyptian side since the beginning of the brutal war in Gaza. The Rafah Crossing gate on the Egyptian side is open, but the closure of the Palestinian gate prevents the entry of aid (there is no possibility of entering Gaza except through the Palestinian gate). Although the Rafah crossing is designated for the passage of individuals only, not trucks, Egypt has been able to allow thousands of trucks through it since the start of the war to expedite the delivery of aid. Claim 4: Egypt is participating in the blockade of Gaza. Fact: This is a deliberate lie. The Israeli occupation army completely besieges the Gaza Strip by land, sea, and air and controls all entry points into the Strip. Claim 5: The Rafah crossing is the only exit point for the Gaza Strip. Fact: This is incorrect. There are several other crossings in Gaza, such as the Karm Abu Salem crossing, the Erez crossing, the Sufa crossing, the Nahal Oz crossing, the Karni crossing, and the Kissufim crossing, all of which are fully controlled by Israel. Israel, the occupying power, obstructs the entry of any humanitarian aid through all the crossings it controls, including the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing. Those who claim that Egypt is responsible for what is happening in the Gaza Strip should demand pressure on Israel to open all the crossings it controls. Claim 6: Egypt prevents public solidarity with Gaza. Fact: This is a false claim. Egypt has organized and facilitated visits to the Rafah and Arish crossings for numerous citizens and officials from humanitarian organizations, as well as for senior international officials. This included the UN Secretary-General and French President Macron, whose visit contributed to France's decision to recognize the Palestinian state. Egypt has also organized visits for foreign ministers, senior officials, and civil society representatives. Additionally, there are rules and regulations for conducting solidarity visits to these border areas based on the facts on the ground, given their proximity to a war zone and the need to take special measures to secure and protect participants in any marches or visits there. Claim 7: Egypt failed to support the Palestinian cause. Fact: This is a deliberate slander and lie. No country in the world has made as much effort or sacrifice for the Palestinian cause as Egypt. Egypt has played a key role as a mediator in the difficult and complex ceasefire negotiations, and its efforts succeeded in achieving this on 19 January 2025. However, Israel failed to fulfill its commitments. Egypt hosted the Cairo Peace Summit in October 2023 and the emergency Arab Summit in March 2025. It prepared a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, which contributed to halting displacement plans. It also played a leading role in coordinating Arab, Islamic, and international action on the Palestinian issue. Claim 8: Demonstrations in front of Egyptian embassies support the Palestinian cause. Fact: On the contrary, demonstrations in front of Egyptian embassies undermine Egypt's historical role in supporting the Palestinian cause and the sacrifices Egypt has made since the Nakba. They serve the Israeli occupation entirely, offering it a free gift. This contributes to distracting international and Arab public opinion from the real culprit behind the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip and easing the recent mounting international pressure to halt the blatant Israeli violations committed against the Palestinian people. It also diverts attention from the crimes the Palestinian people are suffering and targets Egypt, as the steadfast, fundamental pillar defending the rights of the Palestinian people. This severely harms the Palestinian struggle for independence and creates division among the Arab peoples, to the benefit of Israel. Claim 9: Egypt is not keen on stopping the famine in Gaza. Fact: This is an illogical claim. The entry of humanitarian aid is not only a moral, humanitarian, and legal duty but also serves the national interest by strengthening the Palestinian people, ensuring their steadfastness on their land, preventing their displacement, and preventing the implementation of 'alternative homeland' scenarios by starving the population to empty the land. Bringing in the largest possible amount of aid is a top priority for Egypt, primarily for moral and humanitarian reasons, and also to ensure an end to Israeli displacement plans and attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause by forcing the Palestinian people to leave their land. Claim 10: Criticizing the Egyptian role aims to alleviate the suffering in Gaza. Fact: There are deliberate attempts to systematically distort and cast doubt on the Egyptian role, and to deliberately falsify facts with the aim of undermining Egypt's role, frustrating the Arab peoples, creating divisions among them, and weakening Palestinian resilience.
