Mikel Arteta told one transfer he must make to 'complete' his Arsenal squad

Daily Mirror21-04-2025

Arsenal are set to be active in the summer transfer window with new sporting directo Andrea Berta now in place at the club - with Mikel Arteta wanting a new striker for his side
Matheus Cunha must be placed on Arsenal's transfer shortlist, according to former Arsenal ace Julio Baptista. The Wolves star is one of two options Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have this summer to complete the Gunners' squad.
A new striker has long been on the agenda for the north London side, and Arteta had hoped for a new arrival in the January transfer window. Injuries have seen Mikel Merino lead the line in recent months and the gap in the squad is likely to be revisited in the summer.

Arsenal were linked to Cunha in January, but the 25-year-old Brazilian ultimately extended his contract at Molineux. The Wolves ace has bagged 16 goals in 30 appearances this term, despite the Midlands club looking like a relegation candidate for much of the season.
Those exploits have been enough to convince Baptista that Cunha can improve the Gunners' squad. The 47-times capped international reckons the forward thrive with greater opportunities presented by Arsenal team-mates.
'People talk about Matheus Cunha, the Brazilian. He's done incredible stuff at Wolves, so maybe he's the player that Arsenal need" told footitalia.com.
"Arsenal need to take a look at him, I think. Cunha should definitely be on their shortlist. He has performed brilliantly in a team that has found life difficult at times this season, so you would think that at Arsenal he would score even more goals given the chances that they create and the way they dominate most games. He would also be playing with better players."
The talents of Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres have not gone unnoticed by Baptista either. The Sweden international has put a convincing argument forward to have gathered interest in the upcoming transfer window.
'Then there's Viktor Gyokeres, too," he added. "The boy has incredible numbers: 45 games, 44 goals, 11 assists.

"Arsenal are one of the teams that are supposed to be really interested in him, and I can see why. I think the new Sporting Director Andrea Berta really likes him; he was on his radar when he was the Sporting Director at Atletico Madrid."
Either player would improve Arsenal's offering next term, according to Baptista. The pair would bring an aura to the Emirates.

"If I'm Arteta, I'm moving for one of those two," Baptista said. I think it's really important that Arsenal bring in a striker that is coming off the back of a great season and is full of confidence.
"They need a player to join them who has that aura about them and is ready to complete the side,' Baptista said.

Arsenal, Man Utd and Spurs racing to seal transfers with one team left fuming

The transfer window is seeing competition between Premier League clubs Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham as they attempt to get signings over the line in their quest for success The trouble with good players can often be how sought-after they are. If there's a clear path to their signature, perhaps they aren't as spectacular as expected or maybe, if you're lucky, you know something others don't. Tottenham's transfer ambitions this summer are certainly not for unknown, uncut gems and have instead taken the shape of prized Premier League possessions. Laudable, and good moves if they can be pulled off, but the Lilywhites may just find out how problematic such deals can be if you can't get them over the line. ‌ With the arrival of Thomas Frank came a desire to land Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo but Spurs weren't first on the scene. The Cameroon international's interest in a move to Manchester United had already developed but Daniel Levy was not immediately dismayed. ‌ Spurs jumped into the race with a bid worth £10million more than United's own offer when they launched a £70m approach. From the outside it sounds like the bold move required to sign a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last term. But despite holding all the cards: a bigger bid, a familiar face in Frank, and being able to offer Champions League football, it seems the club will have to turn elsewhere. Ruben Amorim's side look set to agree a deal worth £65m, with Mbeumo anticipated to complete a deal next week. Football doesn't always make sense, although Manchester United did finish two places above their rivals in the league despite falling to them in the Europa League final. Perhaps money talks or perhaps the Red Devils' stature remains worth more than more tangible qualities. What may be more frustrating is that Tottenham could once again find themselves as the odd one out, unable to capture the attention of the figure commanding everyone's eyes on the dancefloor that is the transfer window. With the competition of an even fiercer rival, Spurs may be forced to jink and jive to standout. Arsenal could be the team to scupper Tottenham 's back-up plan after 'holding talks' with Eberechi Eze's representatives. ‌ Spurs have long-tracked the Crystal Palace and England star but may struggle to hold a candle to Arsenal's Premier League ambitions after a difficult time in 2024/25. Eze made it on to Spurs' shortlist but it appears the Gunners could jump the queue with Andrea Berta already on the case and in conversations. The Europa League champions cannot even repeat their ploy to land Mbeumo as Eze has a release clause in his contract. The former QPR starlet can be taken from Selhurst Park for £68m, ensuring the 26-year-old has almost the only say in his future. But a scenario where Spurs are left chasing another target is not out of the realms of possibility. The will once again attempt to please, persuade and impress that they are a more suitable option to settle down with over their north London neighbours. ‌ It is the Gunners who can offer a stable environment and will strive for the greatest gold in 2025/26 however. Spurs meanwhile are onto the seventh new face in their dugout since Eze became a Premier League player in 2020 - they will have their work cut out once again. Someone will be left unhappy come the end of the summer. For the moment, Spurs are most at risk.

Man City cruise past Juventus as Haaland reaches 300-goal milestone

Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Savinho – with a long-range stunner – were also on target as City produced an outstanding display despite both sweltering heat and a torrential downpour in Orlando on Thursday. City were pegged back after Doku's early opener when Ederson gifted a goal to Teun Koopmeiners but their lead was restored when Pierre Kalulu turned into his own net at the Camping World Stadium. Haaland, reaching a notable landmark in senior football for club and country, came off the bench to bundle in the third and Foden and Savinho made victory certain before Dusan Vlahovic's consolation. The result means City progress with a 100 per cent record from their three group games and should, in theory at least, have a more straightforward route through the knockout stages. Juve beat City 2-0 when the sides met in the Champions League in December but this was a far different side than the one that won just once in 13 games in a dismal run late last year. It was also a notable shift in gear from City after opening the competition with two straightforward wins against Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain. Jeremy Doku opened the scoring (John Raoux/AP) With Ballon d'Or winner Rodri making his first start since September, City were fluid and energetic. They made a fast start and Bernardo Silva had a header saved by the feet of Michele Di Gregorio before they took the lead in the ninth minute through Doku. Summer signing Rayan Ait-Nouri slipped him in with a fine throughball and the Belgian tucked home after cutting inside Kalulu. Juve responded immediately and City failed to make the most of a reprieve after Vlahovic scuffed an effort wide. Ederson carelessly gave the ball away from the resulting goalkick and Koopmeiners rifled a shot past the Brazilian. Erling Haaland came off the bench to score (Phelan Ebenhack/AP) City dealt well with the setback and Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri and Omar Marmoush all had attempts blocked. The pressure paid off in the 26th minute although they benefited from a huge stroke of luck as Kalulu diverted Matheus Nunes' ball past Di Gregorio. The ferocious sunshine gave way to heavy rain just before the break but City were not deterred as Savinho shot at Di Gregorio before the keeper pushed away further strikes from Ait-Nouri and Marmoush. Marmoush was replaced by Haaland at the interval and the Norwegian soon made an impact. Reijnders played in Nunes, who rolled a pass perfectly into the path of Haaland in front of goal. His connection was hardly the cleanest but such was his positioning he could hardly miss. Phil Foden hit City's fourth goal (Phelan Ebenhack/AP) Ederson denied Vlahovic as Juve sought a way back but Haaland created the opening for the fourth when his pass was picked up by Savinho and powered in by Foden from close range. Savinho added another in style when he thundered in a shot off the underside of the bar from distance after 75 minutes. Juve were well beaten but Vlahovic battled on and pulled one back six minutes from time after good work by Kenan Yildiz.

Transfer news live: Arsenal open talks with Eze, Man Utd pursue Mbeumo deal, Liverpool sign Kerkez

The transfer window is now open again following the start of this summer's Club World Cup with clubs able to accelerate deals ahead of the new season. Arsenal chiefs are reportedly in talks with Eberechi Eze as the look to bring a striker to the club in this window. The Gunners have already agreed a fee for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard in a surprising move after contract talks with Thomas Partey have stalled. They have also agreed to pay above the release fee for Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Arteta wants to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko - though talks have stalled somewhat. Manchester United, meanwhile, have secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m and are negotiating with Brentford about Bryan Mbeumo, having submitted an improved offer. Florian Wirtz is now officially a Liverpool player after agreeing a record £116.5m deal for the German superstar and completed the medical last Friday, while Reds defender Jarell Quansah is set to go the other way in a £35m deal to join Bayern Leverkusen. Liverpool, who have already brought in Jeremie Frimpong, signed Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, on Thursday as they continue to strengthen ahead of the new season. Sky Sports News revealed that the add-ons amount to around £5m if they are all met, taking the total value of the deal to a possible £15m. Negotiations are ongoing for the 31-year-old but this transfer is expected to get over the line in the next couple of days. Arsenal made the move after contract extension talks with Thomas Partey began to stall. Mike Jones27 June 2025 08:02 Arsenal in talks with Eze's representatives Arsenal are in talks with the representatives of Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze reports The Sun. They claim that Gunners chief Andrea Beta met with Eze's people to discuss the details of a potential transfer. Eze is on the market for around £68m and Arsenal would need to battle Tottenham to do a deal. Their main priority is still an out-and-out striker with an attacking winger seen as a bonus. If any move for Eze materialises that would reduce the funds available to purchase a centre forward with Arsenal still negotiating a price for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
