Many Canadians have seen the King's 24-hour whistle-stop trip to Ottawa as a symbol of support for the nation as they battle with

— despite Charles inviting the US leader for a second state visit earlier this year following his return to the White House.
In his address, the King said: "It is with a sense of deep pride and pleasure that my wife and I join you here today as we witness Canadians coming together in a renewed sense of national pride.
"Today, Canada faces another critical moment.
"Democracy, pluralism, rule of law, self-determination and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the government is determined to protect."

And in a possible nod to the ongoing tariff row with Mr Trump, he said: 'The system of open global trade that, while not perfect, has helped to deliver prosperity for Canadians for decades, is changing. Canada's relationships with partners are also changing.'
He went on to look to offer reassurance to Canadians over the changing world and their prospects for the future ahead of them.
He said: 'Canadians can give themselves far more than any foreign power on any continent can ever take away.
'And by staying true to Canadian values, Canada can build new alliances and a new economy that serves all Canadians.'

In the address, which outlined the plans of Mr Carney's government, he described how Canada's PM and Mr Trump had begun a new relationship built on 'mutual respect and founded on common interests'.

Britain's Got Talent viewers 'work out' how winner pulled off magic trick
Britain's Got Talent fans have been left fuming after 'figuring out' how 2025 winner Harry Moulding pulled off one of his daring tricks. Fans of the long-running ITV talent show voted for the 24-year-old magician from Blackpool to win the 18th season of the show. Harry beat off competition from dance troupe The Blackouts and solo dancer Binita, 8, to win the show. While Binita got to the final on her own merit, both Harry and The Blackouts were propelled to the final by the judges, who used golden buzzers, which gave them an automatic place in the final. During Saturday night's grand finale, Harry wowed the judges, live audience, and those watching from home as he executed an impressive skydiving magic trick. He asked Bruno Tonioli, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden to take part in an elaborate card trick. After several minutes of banter and card selection, it was revealed that Bruno had picked out the three of clubs, Alesha would select the four of hearts, and Amanda would pick the seven of diamonds. While the judges were already impressed by the stage of the trick, Harry then played a video clip of himself sky diving hours earlier. During his descent, he predicted that the trio would pick the cards that the ultimately ended up with. The judges and audience were left gobsmacked by the reveal, but some fans watching along at home were convinced they figured out how Harry had pulled off the stunt. Fans took to social media to accuse the performer of cheating - and even using AI to perfect his act. One viewer wrote on X: "How much AI on the #BGTFinal magician's video?" And another, also accusing AI of being involved, wrote: "Not my cup tea this AI magic #BGTFinal". Others accused Harry of using simple sleight-of-hand tricks or using reflections to perfect his stunt. One wrote: "#BGT he can see the card in the camera." And another fan typed: "They have all put their card on the top #BGT." Other viewers were stunned by the performance, however, and went on to cheer for the winner. One wrote on X: "I'm not usually a fan of magicians, but this guy is brilliant and really enjoyable to watch #BGTFinal." And another fan gushed: "I dont care what anyone says but Harry Moulding deserves to win. All my votes goes to him #BGTFinal." Harry was indeed crowned winner of the 2025 season - with the awestruck magician telling hosts Ant and Dec: "I can't believe what is going on." Snatching the microphone from Declan, he continued: "Thank you, everyone, so, so much. I genuinely feel like everyone has been behind me. This has been the most incredible journey. I can't believe that I'm here. Thank you." His victory came after he wowed the judges with his tricks. Alesha gushed during the show: "Every time we see you, you up the level, you take it to the next level, and your imagination and the way you present your act is just astonishing. You're so likeable." And head judge Simon Cowell added his commendation, remarking how Harry was "so good, but so humble". He further commented: "This show, genuinely, is about finding people like you who, for whatever reason, haven't had the break they deserve. And you do deserve this break, I really think the audience are going to get behind you." After being crowned winner, Harry has the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Performance later this year and has also pocketed a whopping £250,000 cash prize.

EU prepared to retaliate to Trump's steel and aluminum tariff hikes
Europe is prepared to retaliate against US president Donald Trump's plan to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, the European Commission, raising the prospect of an escalating trade fight between two of the world's largest economic powers. Mr Trump's announcement on Friday that he would increase tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50% from 25%, intensifies his global trade war and came just hours after he accused China of violating an agreement with the U.S. to mutually roll back levies and trade restrictions for critical minerals. The European Commission said it "strongly" regrets Trump's plan to increase tariffs, adding it "undermines ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution." "This decision adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic," a European Commission spokesperson said, adding that "the (European Union) is prepared to impose countermeasures." The spokesperson noted that the European Union had paused its countermeasures to create space for continued negotiations. "The European Commission is currently finalising consultations on expanded countermeasures. If no mutually acceptable solution is reached, both existing and additional EU measures will automatically take effect on 14 July — or earlier, if circumstances require," the spokesperson added. Trump announced the higher tariffs just outside Pittsburgh, where he was talking up an agreement between Nippon Steel and US Steel. Trump said the $14.9bn (€13.1bn) deal, like the tariff increase, will help keep jobs for steel workers in the US. He later posted on social media that the increased tariff would also apply to aluminum products and that it would take effect on Wednesday. The planned move ratchets up pressure on global steel producers, and has sparked protests from trading partners around the world. Canada's Chamber of Commerce quickly denounced the tariff hike as "antithetical to North American economic security." "Unwinding the efficient, competitive and reliable cross-border supply chains like we have in steel and aluminum comes at a great cost to both countries," Candace Laing, president of the chamber, said in a statement. Canada's United Steelworkers union called the move a direct attack on Canadian industries and workers. Australia's centre-left government also condemned the tariff increase, with Australia's trade minister Don Farrell calling it "unjustified and not the act of a friend." The US is the world's largest steel importer, excluding the European Union, with a total of 26.2m tons of imported steel in 2024, according to the US Department of Commerce. As a result, the new tariffs will likely increase steel prices across the board, hitting industry and consumers alike. Steel and aluminum tariffs were among the earliest put into effect by Mr Trump when he returned to office in January. The tariffs of 25% on most steel and aluminum imported to the US went into effect in March, and he had briefly threatened a 50% levy on Canadian steel but ultimately backed off. Reuters
