Now Boarding: Metro's LAX/Metro Transit Center Station Officially Opens, Connecting Communities; Bringing Faster, Easier Travel for Angelenos, Visitors
LOS ANGELES, June 6, 2025 /CNW/ -- The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) celebrated the official opening of the LAX/Metro Transit Center station with a ribbon-cutting today. Metro is now ready to welcome global fans headed to Los Angeles for major events, such as FIFA World Cup 26™, Super Bowl LXI, and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games forever changing how car-centric Angelenos travel to and from LAX.
"The wait is over, Los Angeles," said Metro Board Chair and LA County Supervisor, Janice Hahn. "At long last, we are getting a train to LAX. And when the Automated People Mover finally opens, we will truly have an international airport that connects people from inside the terminals to the world beyond through Metro."
The grand opening of this station marks the eighth project completed in Metro's ambitious Twenty-Eight by '28 initiative, a comprehensive plan to enhance the region's transit infrastructure in time for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is poised to play a crucial role in facilitating the movement of athletes, officials, and spectators during these global events.
The state-of-the-art transit center embodies a large-scale open station concept. With continuous swooping canopies guiding users' views through large open spaces, the station reinforces intuitive wayfinding and walking access to buses and light rail trains, and the soon-to-be-opened Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), Automated People Mover (APM).

Located at Aviation Blvd./96th St., the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station signifies the K line is a fully functional connection in Metro's network. Connecting Metro's C and K rail lines, six Metro bus lines and eight municipal bus lines, including Beach Cities, Big Blue Bus, Culver City Bus, GTrans, Torrance Transit and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) shuttles to and from the terminals. Metro Micro will also service this station. By providing a direct connection to regional transit, the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station expands options for airport-area employees and travelers, and decreases reliance on more costly options, such as taxis, rideshares or private vehicles.

The new station illustrates for Angelenos and the world that public transportation is the secret to bypassing traffic on their way to and from LAX, and that Metro, with one of the most ambitious capital project programs in the United States, is a reliable and comfortable way to travel across the county.
Featuring a bus plaza, bike hub and a customer service center, the station spans more than 1,100 feet from north to south. With the widest light rail platform in the Metro system, its two main levels provide a welcoming, convenient and secure connection point offering riders access to a wide array of destinations throughout LA County. In addition, this station features security coverage monitored 24/7 by security operations staff.
As part of Metro's commitment to sustainable urban planning, the station also includes numerous environmentally friendly features such as energy-efficient lighting, landscaping with native plants, and plans for further expansion to accommodate future growth. This project represents Metro's on-going efforts to enhance regional mobility, support green infrastructure, and prepare Los Angeles for the future.
When the APM opens and connects to Metro in 2026, Angelenos and visitors alike will have a more direct, easier connection to Metro's public transportation system, with a total of six stops – three in the terminal, one at the Metro/LAX Transit Center Station, one at economy parking and one at the Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility (ConRAC) which is directly across the street from the transit center. As riders await access to the APM, LAWA will provide shuttles every 10 minutes. The shuttle's schedule will be based on the operating schedules for the C and K light rail lines and municipal bus routes serving the new station ensuring seamless travel to and from the airport helping to alleviate traffic congestion around LAX.

Commissioned by Metro Art, the suspended sculpture consists of a series of vessels for travel, both real and imagined, rafted together in increasing size to create a spiral pathway towards the sky above. The work is a meditation on collective ambitions and shared hope, acting as a bridge to the future created from the designs of the past.

Thousands of volunteers still needed for FIFA World Cup 2026 in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As Kansas City prepares to host a handful of FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, thousands of volunteers are still needed to make it work. Although it's unpaid, organizers said it's an opportunity to give back and show off Kansas City. Shawnee police K-9 stabbed while assisting with standoff call 'We want to have over 15,000 signed up and we just got word yesterday that we have surpassed 10,000 sign-ups,' Lori Thomas, director of volunteers for KC2026, told FOX4 Tuesday. 'We need people from all different backgrounds, cultures, bilingual, etc. We are looking for anyone and everyone that just wants to be part of the Kansas City magic.' Thomas said volunteers are the heartbeat of the operation and midwestern hospitality is needed to welcome the 650,000 visitors that are expected to visit the Kansas City metro during the World Cup. 'We need people that are calm under pressure,' she added. 'We need people that are welcoming. We need people that can be in different scenarios.' Volunteers must be 18 years old. All applicants must speak English; additional languages are a plus, KC2026 said. If interested, the deadline to sign up is Sept. 15. You can sign up here. The process starts with registering and applying with FIFA, then an interview process follows in October. During the process, you can select your interest in certain areas to help match your experience with a specific role. Roles will be all over the community, including at the airport, within the stadium, for FIFA fan fest, hospitality, ticketing and more. 'We are going to interview over potentially 15,000 people, and they are going to come in [then] they are going to visit with interviewers for 30 minutes a piece,' Thomas said. 'So, we will go through that process for about 2-2.5 months.' Background checks, as well as role and venue-specific training, will follow. 'Then, the fun part is, you get to pick up your 10-piece uniform, which is an Adidas FIFA-branded uniform and pick up your accreditation,' Thomas said. She said the schedule commitment is eight-hour shifts, eight times. 'It's going to be over the span of 45 days, between June 1 and approximately July 18,' she said. Volunteer perks include the official uniform, exclusive reward items, meals during shift, a volunteer certificate, along with experiences and opportunities. The organization hopes to interview between 12,000 and 15,000 people to reach their goal of 6,300 volunteers. Staff said, if you are interested, go ahead and apply. Applying now does not constitute your commitment or guarantee an opportunity; there is a process in play from now until tournament time. Role offers and name-check verification begins in January and February of 2026. Shift confirmation is slated for March and April of 2026, then training. Macy's is out in DTLA. Coming in? A chic social club with pickleball and cold plunges
A sprawling social club centering on racquet sports — the ubiquitous pickleball and rising padel, a blend of tennis and squash — is making its way to downtown L.A. next summer. With the cheeky name Ballers, the club will be housed in the former Macy's building at The Bloc, which spans 100,000 square feet. It will be equipped with 18 pickleball courts and four padel courts — marking the first pickleball and padel courts to open in the DTLA area, according to the founders. The club will also feature five golf simulators, two soccer pitches, a high-end retail shop, two full bars, a restaurant and a recovery zone outfitted with a sauna and cold plunge area. Membership packages for the social sports club will start at $99 per month and come with perks such as advanced booking windows, access to the recovery lounge and invites to exclusive events. Nonmembers will still be welcome to enjoy the social spaces and book courts for fees between $15 to $25 per hour. '[We wanted] to bring the country club to the city in an elevated, fun way,' said Ballers CEO David Gutstadt. Ballers L.A. will be the third Ballers location — the first will debut in Philadelphia later this month and the second will open in Boston later this year. The founders, who are behind hospitality projects like the Fitler Club and Equinox Hotels, have plans to expand to 50 locations across the country within the next seven to 10 years. Ballers has received financial backing from an all-star roster of professional athletes including tennis icons Andre Agassi, Kim Clijsters and Sloane Stephens, pickleball champion Connor Garnett and 76ers star Tyrese Maxey. Earlier this year, Macy's at the Bloc was deemed one of the retailer's 'underproductive' locations and closed its doors, leaving downtown L.A. without a department store for the first time in over 150 years. This evolution of the space follows a trend of retail stores transforming into 'experiential' spaces — companies are tapping into consumers' hunger for communal experiences and new hobbies. In 2023, indoor pickleball venue Pickle Pop opened in Santa Monica, in part to try to revive ailing Third Street Promenade. When designing Ballers' Los Angeles club, co-founder and chief creative officer Amanda Potter said it was important that the venue be accessible in location and price so that anyone could visit and try the racquet sports. While the popularity of pickleball has skyrocketed since the COVID-19 pandemic, Potter said not everyone is familiar with it, citing a 2023 study by the Association of Pickleball Professionals which found that less than 10 percent of Angelenos had tried the sport that year. 'It's a sport that people are still getting acquainted with, so we don't want to have that barrier to people trying our sports by saying it's members-only,' Potter said. Garnett, who started playing pickleball about three years ago, said he was eager to become involved with the Ballers' project. 'You don't have to be great at pickleball to come out here,' he said. 'You don't have to be great at padel. It's just really an inclusive way to get people active and on their feet.' While there is no set opening date for Ballers L.A., the founders say it will launch in the late summer of 2026.
