Medium- and small-scale agri activities: PM for easy lending policy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday called for urgent measures to revitalise the country's struggling agricultural sector, stressing the need for a bold roadmap to provide easy loans and advanced technology to small and medium farmers, particularly those owning less than 12 acres.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on national agricultural development and financing, Sharif directed officials to present a comprehensive plan by the end of the month aimed at facilitating farmers' access to easy-term loans for modern agricultural equipment, artificial intelligence technologies, and quality seeds.
He emphasised the importance of improving farmers' access to small-scale industrial machinery to process produce into export-ready products, underlining that agricultural development and value addition are critical to Pakistan's overall progress.

'The development of Pakistan is closely linked to the agricultural sector and the value addition of farmers' produce,' Sharif said, noting that supporting small farmers remains a top priority for agricultural growth.
'The government is accelerating reforms to provide farmers with modern equipment, quality seeds, AI tools, improved water management systems, on-farm small industries, and other essential facilities,' he added.
These reforms also include measures to offer farmers necessary facilities and training to boost exports through the processing of agricultural commodities.
During the meeting, officials presented detailed briefing on ongoing reforms in the agricultural sector, the performance of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Ltd (ZTBL), and loan disbursement efforts.
Sharif instructed the development and timely submission of comprehensive plans to introduce a modernised agri-financing system that ensures farmers receive loans on easy terms.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers Ahad Cheema and Rana Tanveer Hussain, Adviser to the Prime Minister Muhammad Ali, Ministers of State Bilal Kiani and Abdul Rehman Kanju, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad, and other senior officials.

According to the official statement, the prime minister directed the Ministry of Finance to immediately release funds on a priority basis under the Workers' Remittances Incentive Scheme. 'Overseas Pakistanis are a vital asset and strength of the country,' said Prime Minister Shehbaz. He noted this was instrumental in securing a current account surplus — Pakistan's first in 14 years — and helped meet the import bill while boosting foreign exchange reserves. Shehbaz Sharif also emphasised that contributions come from all sectors of the diaspora — from labourers to business professionals — and underscored the need to remove barriers to remittance flows. 'Efforts are ongoing to make the remittance system more efficient, effective, and user-friendly for our hardworking overseas community,' he added. The incentive scheme aims to channel more remittances through formal banking channels, a crucial factor for Pakistan's economic stability.

Pakistan govt decides to continue remittance incentive scheme

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided on Saturday to continue the remittance incentive scheme, directing the Ministry of Finance to immediately release funds on a priority basis for the Workers' Remittances Incentive Scheme, a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) read. The development comes a few weeks after State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) Dr Inayat Hussain reportedly cautioned that the government's decision to curtail subsidies for promoting foreign remittances, which hit a record $38 billion in F2024-25, might reduce the flow through banking channels. 'Overseas Pakistanis are our strength and a valuable asset of the country,' PM Shehbaz was quoted as saying the PMO statement on Saturday. SBP revises Telegraphic Transfer charges scheme, raises limit to $200, includes ECs 'The hard-earned remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis play a vital role in Pakistan's development, and I, along with the entire nation, deeply value their contribution. 'These remittances not only helped in covering the rising import bill but also contributed to the increase in foreign exchange reserves,' he said. 'We are removing obstacles in the way of remittances sent by hardworking overseas Pakistanis and making the system more effective, efficient, and user-friendly.' The inflow of overseas workers' remittances into Pakistan stood at $38.3 billion in fiscal year 2024-25, the highest-ever in the country's history, the SBP data showed. Remittances increased by 27% year over year, compared to $30.25 billion recorded in the previous fiscal. Home remittances play a significant role in supporting the country's external account, stimulating Pakistan's economic activity as well as supplementing the disposable incomes of remittance-dependent households.

Pakistan invites global stakeholders to invest in healthcare sector

Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal has urged international stakeholders to explore partnerships in Pakistan's rapidly evolving health landscape, reported Radio Pakistan on Saturday. Representing Pakistan at Boao Forum for Asia's (BFA) Global Health Forum in Beijing, he said Pakistan presents immense opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and investment. Kamal invited global partners to explore investment avenues, emphasising Pakistan's commitment to providing strong returns, streamlined regulation, and government support. Established in 2001, the Boao Forum for Asia is a non-governmental and non-profit international conference organisation. Since its inception, with a focus on Asia and a global perspective, the Boao Forum for Asia has been committed to promoting regional cooperation in Asia and common development across the world. Apart from traditional economic issues, the conference has been focusing on health issues closely related to economic development and the people's well-being. 'Pakistan is ready for partnerships in global health,' said Kamal, according to a post on his X account, highlighting that250 million population, nursing cooperation, and digital reforms are our assets. 'Economy cannot progress without health,' said Kamal. During the address, the health minister informed that the recently inaugurated digital licensing and registration system for medical devices 'will complete licensing in 20 days.' Just days ago, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the digital licensing system, terming it a significant milestone in healthcare reform and transparency. Sharif said that while revolutionising the country's healthcare sector is a daunting task, it is achievable through collective effort. 'It is difficult, but not impossible,' he said. The newly-launched digital platform – initiated under the previous coalition government – will enable medical device manufacturers to complete licensing documentation online and receive approvals within 20 days. This sharply reduces the years-long delays that, according to Sharif, had previously encouraged corruption and inefficiency.
