Bali's crazy new wellness store

Bali's crazy new wellness store

West Australian3 days ago
Last year, I reviewed Ikone Bali Spaceships, an experimental cocktail bar, art gallery and restaurant with fine French food in the Seminyak tourist precinct of Bali.
Now the owner, Yaz Duralex, a French entrepreneur and accomplished graffiti artist, is about to launch a new wellness concept called Hydrotherapiz Lab.
Last week, he invited The West Australian inside for a sneak peek. Hydrotherapiz Lab specialises in high-end organic perfumes, soaps, serums and botanical candles handmade on the premises using a machine cut straight out of a science fiction film that costs as much as a new family car: a rotary evaporator, or Rotovap for short.
Traditionally used in laboratories to remove solvents from samples through the process of evaporation, Yaz used a Rotavap at his restaurant to make luxury apple juice by extracting the flavour from apples without any sugar, and other unique cocktails and drinks.
Now he's applying the same process to unlock and extract the botanical and healing powers of rare roots, flowers, leaves, spices and resins sourced from different islands of Indonesia and make scents and skincare products with aromas that are off the charts that are chemical-free.
'I was inspired by Yuka, a smartphone app that tells you the ingredients inside food, beauty products and toiletries,' says Yaz. 'I picked up some soap, cologne and suncream from a store in Bali. But when I scanned them with Yuka, I was shocked to learn that about 75 per cent of the ingredients are banned in the West. That was the light-bulb moment, when I realised there was space in the market to start an organic skincare range in Bali.'
The Hydrotherapiz product range will include labels like Cosmos, a scent made from fig leaves, lotus flowers and jasmine; Blood Dragon soap enriched with cryo macerated vetiver and Edelweiss flowers; and Lumibalm, a botanical candle that blends seaweed and exotic woods and that melts into a body balm.
But the Hydrotherapy concept store doesn't end there. It will also include a day spa based on 'cryotherapy' or ice bathing.
An ancient form of physical therapy first mentioned in an Egyptian medical text, ice bathing is believed to have a range of health benefits like better circulation, improved immune responses and reduced muscle inflammation.
There are already dozens of venues in Bali where you can get an ice bath: gyms, hotels, yoga retreats and day spas. But in all these places, the ice baths are communal, whereas here they are pod-shaped and for one person only.
Yaz designed and built the baths with proprietary engines that not only cool but also clean and filter the water after every use. And instead of just sitting there and shivering as your body goes into cold shock, the staff at Hydrotherapiz Lab teach the Wim Hof breathing technique: deep, rhythmic breaths that help control the body's stress response.
They also take a photo of you to show your friends and family as you freeze your arse off in Bali.
fact file
Hydrotherapiz Lab is at 28 jalan (street) Lebak Sari in Seminyak, one of Bali's most popular beachside districts, about half an hour's drive north of the international airport.

Epic Royal Show preview kicks off countdown to annual event

The opening of sideshow alley might still be weeks away, but the countdown is officially on — there are just 44 days until the Perth Royal Show returns to Claremont Showground. Excitement is building for the highly anticipated annual event, with a taste of what to expect on display inside Centenary Pavilion on Wednesday. Camboon Primary School students got to get amongst the action. Ten-year-old Astrid Snook said she cannot wait to come back to the showground with her mum when it officially opens to eat sweet food and pat the farm animals. 'I'm definitely excited for more bananas dipped in chocolate and the animals,' she said. Astrid told The West she has gone to the Royal Show almost every year and won't be stopping anytime soon. Five-year-old Jacob Perry was showing off one of his eight pet cows to the city kids who, unlike him, don't see farm animals every day. But for Jacob, the animals aren't the exciting part. 'I love going on the rides,' he said. 'Rollercoasters and the swing chairs are my favourite.' The executive officer of the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia, Robyn Sermon, revealed the upcoming show will feature new attractions, including exclusive rides and after-dark activities. 'To make this not an everyday event, we have locked in some amazing new attractions this year and more value, more variety,' Ms Sermon said. 'For the first time ever, in Perth, we will be welcoming the flying force. They are a Canadian based high diving team that will dive from a platform 25 meters above the arena into a three-meter deep pool. Ella, Mya and Astrid enjoy the rides. Credit: Ian Munro / The West Australian 'They will be doing that three times a day. It will be even more exciting at night, when we literally light them up. 'We will turn the arena into a 360 degree sky theatre, this (will be) the most innovative fireworks we've ever had, and we'll be wrapping the audience in colour, sound and light. 'We're launching a new late-night precinct, called Late Night Woodies, featuring fun, country-inspired music and entertainment, which will start after the fireworks every night. 'We are debuting a brand new ride, the 24-meter Luna Ritz, which has arrived from Europe and will debut in Australia for the first time at this year's Royal Show.' It has been made possible thanks to a $2.8 million funding boost from the government and an additional $950,000 from Lotterywest. Agricultural minister Jackie Jarvis said sh is proud to see the Royal Show's agricultural precinct continue to grow in popularity. Perth Royal Show preview at Claremont Showgrounds. 'Everything that's linked to agriculture and everything that is great about agriculture in Western Australia, you'll see here at the Perth Royal Show.' Ms Jarvis hopes to match last years record breaking attendance number of more than 430,000 showgoers A $600,000 program to support affiliated agricultural shows around the state was also announced on Wednesday in a government first. ‘A proud symbol of representation and visibility': Madame Tussauds Sydney unveils first ‘non-binary' wax figure of rocker G Flip

Aussie rocker G Flip has become the first non-binary person to be immortalised in wax by Madame Tussauds Sydney. The Melbourne-born singer and drummer, who goes by they/them pronouns, was unveiled as the latest addition to the museum on Wednesday. G Flip's waxy doppelganger is part of Madame Tussauds' music icon series and will appear alongside the likes of Kylie Minogue, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. 'Wow, this is extremely wild. Very stoked to be made of wax and be the first non-binary wax figure in Australia,' G Flip said in a statement. 'It's an honour to be included among so many legends. I hope everyone enjoys whacking some drums with the wax version of me, apologies for the noise in advance.' While G Flip's wax figure will be on permanent display in Sydney, the real G Flip now lives in Los Angeles with their wife, Netflix star Chrisell Stause. In a press release, Madame Tussauds claimed the new statue would serve as 'historic moment' for the country's LGBTQ+ community. 'The figure also stands as a proud symbol of representation and visibility, celebrating LGBTQ+ Australians and reinforcing Madame Tussauds' commitment to showcasing diverse icons who inspire and lead with authenticity,' a spokesperson for the wax museum said. 'G Flip has revolutionised the Australian music scene with their raw talent and fearless authenticity,' Chris Harvey, Head of Operations at Madame Tussauds Sydney added. 'But beyond the music, they've become a beacon of inclusivity and self-expression. This figure celebrates both their artistry and their impact - and we're proud to welcome them to our Sydney Live! zone.' The original Madame Tussauds museum was opened in London in 1835 by French sculptor Marie Tussaud, who wowed the public with her eerily life-like creations. The Madame Tussauds brand is now owned by Merlion Entertainments, which operates over a dozen wax museums across the globe.

Star's daughter ‘frontrunner' to replace Anna Wintour as Vogue editor

Don't miss out on the headlines from Magazines. Followed categories will be added to My News. Chloe Malle is the frontrunner to take over at Vogue from fashion's legendary ice queen Anna Wintour, Page Six reports. Malle — the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and French film director Louis Malle — is currently editor of and is in the 'final rounds' of interviews to be the new head of editorial content for US Vogue. Chloe, 39, is a favourite of staff at Vogue and recently interviewed Lauren Sanchez for her Vogue cover ahead of her lavish Venetian wedding to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos. Chloe Malle is the 'frontrunner' to replace Wintour. Wintour has been at the helm for 37 years. Picture: Karwai Tang/WireImage We're told that Condé Nast bosses, including CEO Roger Lynch and Anna Wintour, who is stepping down as Vogue's editor-in-chief, have whittled the shortlist down to the final few candidates. Vogue declined to comment. Nicole Phelps, global director of Vogue Runway – the online platform of Vogue dedicated to fashion shows – is also in the running. The new editor should be announced by the beginning of New York Fashion week, which starts September 11 and runs through September 16. Chloe Malle, pictured with her famous mum Candice Bergen, is a hot favourite to succeed Anna Wintour at Vogue. Picture: Supplied There are believed to be four to five favourites left, including some external candidates. However, Instagram's Eva Chen, a pal of Wintour's, is no longer believed to be in the running as her role is so big at Meta. Chen, who is Head of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram, previously worked on Condé Nast's Teen Vogue and Lucky. 'Eva is making a ton of money at Instagram,' said an industry insider. 'There is no reason for her to move over.' W Magazine owner Sara Moonves has also been linked to the role, but another source pointed out that she's too entwined with her publication to make the move. Similarly, Chioma Nnadi, who replaced Edward Enninful as Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue in October 2023, is happy in London and doing a great job. Wintour, 75, broke the news that she was stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue in June after helming the fashion bible for 37 years. Wintour might be stepping don, but she won't hand over her editor-in-chief title – her successor will be known as 'Head of Editorial Content.' Picture: Karwai Tang/WireImage 'When I became the editor of Vogue, I was eager to prove to all who might listen that there was a new, exciting way to imagine an American fashion magazine,' she told staff. 'Now, I find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas, supported by a new, exciting view of what a major media company can be.' As previously reported, the new boss won't get Wintour's editor-in-chief title, and will be a head of editorial content instead. They will also report to Wintour, who is staying on as Vogue's global editorial director and chief content officer for Condé Nast. '[I'll be] paying very close attention to the fashion industry and to the creative cultural force that is our extraordinary Met Ball, and charting the course of future Vogue Worlds, and any other original fearless ideas we may come up with,' Wintour has said.
