India's most profitable film of 2025 with just ₹7 crore budget earned 1200% profit, beats Chhaava, Saiyaara
But rising above all was a small-budget film with no big stars that emerged as the most profitable release of the year.
India's most profitable film of 2025 so far is the Tamil surprise box office success, Tourist Family.
Tourist Family is written and directed by Abishan Jeevinth, who made his directorial debut with the film.
The slice-of-life comedy-drama stars M. Sasikumar, Simran, Mithun Jai Sankar, and Kamalesh Jagan in the lead, while Yogi Babu, Ramesh Thilak, M. S. Bhaskar, Elango Kumaravel, Sreeja Ravi, and Bagavathi Perumal are also part of the film's ensemble cast.
The storyline of Tourist Family follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family who reach India in search of a better future after the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
The film is produced by Million Dollar Studios and MRP Entertainment. It was released on 29 April 2025 (India) and 1 May 2025 (worldwide).
Tourist Family was made on a modest budget of just ₹ 7 crore. The film went on to earn over ₹ 90 crore worldwide, delivering a whopping 1200% profit over its production cost.
In addition to its commercial triumph, it garnered glowing reviews from both critics and audiences.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Tourist Family opened in India with an impressive day-one collection of ₹ 2.35 crore. It gained strong momentum over the weekend, amassing ₹ 23.3 crore in its first week alone. Powered by positive word-of-mouth, the film continued to grow and earned even more in its second week, collecting ₹ 28 crore.
The film maintained a stronghold at the box office for five consecutive weeks, ultimately ending its run with a lifetime global collection of ₹ 90 crore—of which ₹ 70.7 crore came from the Indian market alone.
With its earnings, Tourist Family has emerged as the most profitable film, even surpassing 2025's highest grosser Chhaava.
Vicky Kaushal's biggest hit Chhaava earned ₹ 808 crore worldwide. The film was made on a budget of ₹ 90 crore, which means it earned around 800% profit. While it is an impressive number, it's still less than what Tourist Family achieved with about 8% of Chhaava's budget.
Even the latest box office blockbuster, YRF's Saiyaara, featuring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, is far from replicating the profit margins attained by Tourist Family.
As per Sacnilk, Saiyaara recorded worldwide earnings of ₹ 393.80 crore. Reportedly, the Mohit Suri film is made on a budget of ₹ 50 crore, raking in 687.6% profit so far.
Other box office hits such as Housefull 5 earned ₹ 300 crore worldwide. However, it wasn't as profitable as expected due to its huge budget of ₹ 225 crore. The same goes for Salman Khan's Sikandar. Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has done better, becoming one of the highest grossers of this year so far. It made about 300% profit, as per the latest report.
Some South Indian films have also delivered excellent profits. While Tamil film Dragon made a 300% profit at the box office, Malayalam hit Thudarum recorded about 720% profit margin. Telugu blockbuster Sankranthiki Vasthunam, the top Telugu film of 2025 so far, made around 300% profit on its ₹ 60-crore budget.
Tourist Family is now streaming on JioHotstar.

What is Raanjhanaa movie controversy? 9-point detailed timeline of AI-altered climax in re-release of Dhanush starrer
Raanjhanaa, a 2013 released much-loved romantic drama, sparked a controversy on AI-altered climax. If you have no clue about what exactly happened and why director Aanand L Rai and actor Dhanush are opposing the re-release, here's a 9-point detailed timeline of the AI-tweaked climax of Raanjhanaa. Makers announces the re-release with new climax In July 2025, Eros International, the production banner, announced the re-release of Raanjhanaa /Ambikapathy with a new ending powered by AI. The movie was announced to re-release on August 1st, 2025, in cinemas. Aanand L Rai opposed the act while disassociating himself from the movie Aanand L Rai, who directed the movie, strongly opposed the strategy. In a statement, Aanand told PTI, 'I'm heartbroken that this is the future we're heading toward, where intent and authorship are disposable. All I can do is dissociate myself from such a reckless and dystopian experiment. Raanjhanaa didn't need a new climax.' 'To see its ending altered without a word of discussion is a gross violation not just of the film, but of the trust of the fans who've carried the film in their hearts for 12 years,' the filmmaker said. Eros responded and called it a creative reimagination While responding to Aanand L Rai's comment, company's CEO Pradeep Dwivedi said, 'This is a creative reimagining, not a replacement, and is consistent with global industry practices including anniversary editions, alternate cuts, and modernised remasters." The company further stated that Eros holds the sole and exclusive copyright and producer rights of Raanjhanaa, including the legal and moral rights under Indian law. Raanjhanaa re-released with AI-ending on August 1st in cinemas; fans were divided Raanjhanaa met with mixed response during its re-release on August 1st. While some were seen hooting for the new ending, many showed their disinterest in the movie. A section of Social media called it an act of ripping off the soul of the film. What changes are made in the AI version of Raanjhanaa? While in the original print, Kundan (Dhanush) dies in the climax, the AI version showed Kundan alive. Zoya, Murari and Bindiya who were originally mourning the loss of Kundan in the OG ending, are seen smiling with happy tears when Kundan gets off the ICU bed. Aanand L Rai's social media post against AI-tweaked ending of Raanjhanaa In a social media post, Raanjhanaa director Aanand L Rai called it a devastating step and mentioned that he doesn't support the new AI changes. An excerpt from the caption reads, 'To watch Raanjhanaa, a film born out of care, conflict, collaboration, and creative risk, be altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent has been nothing short of devastating. What makes it worse is the complete ease and casualness with which it's been done.' 'I do not support or endorse the AI-altered version of Raanjhanaa. It is unauthorised. I had no role in it. Neither did the team that made the film. And whatever it claims to be, it is not the film we intended, or made,' wrote the filmmaker on Instagram. Anurag Kashyap, Neeraj Panday, Varun Grover and others condemn the AI-ending Industry people stood in favour of the creators and condemned the new practice. Anurag Kashyap shared a couple of social media posts which criticised the AI-ending of Raanjhanaa. Varun Grover opposed the production banner with a short story of his film Masaan and his uncle's demand of making it a happy ending. Neeraj Panday also reacted on the same and stood firm with the creators. In an interview, he said, 'If Eros says, 'We have the rights, we can do anything,' that's still no excuse. A little communication wouldn't have hurt. If they had just spoken to Anand and the other creators involved in birthing that film, it would have been the right thing to do," the director told NDTV. Dhanush released an official statement against AI-altered ending of Raanjhanaa On August 3, 2025, Dhanush, who played the lead character in Raanjhanaa, released an official statement. He wrote, 'The alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago.' He further stated, 'The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.' Eros responded to Dhanush's statement Eros reverted back with a reply to Dhanush. On August 4, the company released a statement and said, 'We would like to respectfully clarify that an Eros representative had engaged in direct communication with Mr. Dhanush's team regarding the proposed revisions, and no formal objection was communicated to us prior to the AI-enhanced re-release of Ambikapathy.' The production banner also raised questions on Aanand L Rai and Dhanush using title, themes, characters, and music of Raanjhanaa in the promotional assets of their upcoming movie, Tere Ishk Mein. Indian dance troupe mesmerises packed auditorium in Israel
Haifa (Israel), Aug 4 (PTI) India enthusiasts in Israel descended on the northern Israeli coastal city of Haifa on Monday evening to witness a rich and impressive dance performance that blended the traditional Indian dance form of Odissi with modern styles, including fusion, Bollywood, urban dance and even some shades of Middle-Eastern influences. Young dancers from the Indian dance troupe Amaiza, founded by dancer and choreographer Nitisha Nanda, known for her appearances in leading reality shows 'So You Think You Can Dance India" and 'India's Got Talent", gave a captivating performance in front of a packed Beit Aba Hushi auditorium, with the 500 people in the audience often cheering in delight. The Embassy of India in Israel, in collaboration with the Haifa Municipality, the Indian Cultural Centre and the Port of Haifa, hosted the vibrant cultural event, 'celebrating the deepening friendship between India and Israel". The northern Israeli coastal city of Haifa has a deep connection with India, having been liberated from the Ottomans in 1918 by Indian soldiers, and Major Dalpat Singh is known as the 'Hero of Haifa" for leading a successful cavalry charge that shocked military historians by its sheer audacity. 'We were taught in school that the British liberated Haifa, but I later learned that it was Indian soldiers who shed their blood to free the city," Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav told the audience. 'Once a year, we gather at the city's cemetery to honour the Indian soldiers who gave their lives to protect us," Yahav said, emphasising the city's strong bond with India. 'The relationship between India and Israel, especially with the city of Haifa, is built on trust, mutual respect and lasting friendship," India's Ambassador to Israel, J P Singh, said. 'This cultural performance is dedicated to the people of Haifa, a city with which India shares deep historical bonds. During World War I, Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives in the Battle of the Liberation of Haifa," Singh stressed. Dalpat Singh made the ultimate sacrifice in that battle, which the Indian cavalry forces fought bravely under dire circumstances to inscribe their names in the last 'major cavalry charge in history". The performance in Haifa mesmerised the audience with its passion, precision and energy, showcasing both the traditional and contemporary spirit of Indian culture. It was an evening of colour, rhythm and movement — a powerful artistic experience that left a lasting impression on the Israeli audience. The event marked the festive launch of the troupe's Israel tour, with upcoming performances scheduled at Netanya on August 5, Or Akiva on August 6 and Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek on August 7.
