Sheets hits 2 of San Diego's 4 homers, Tatis robs Devers as the Padres beat the Giants 8-1
Manny Machado and Ryan O'Hearn also homered for the Padres, who pulled within one game of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Giants starter Landen Roupp (7-7) was carted off the field after being hit in the back of his right thigh by a line drive by Ramón Laureano in the third inning. He slipped on the mound and his left knee buckled before he fell face-first to the ground. He was holding his left knee as he was checked by a trainer before being loaded onto a cart.
Tatis made a sensational leaping catch to rob Devers in the first after the left-hander hit a high fly ball to right field off left-hander JP Sears. Tatis tracked it to his left, perfectly timed his leap and got his glove high above the wall to make the catch. Tatis landed on his backside and sat against the wall for a moment. He popped up and tossed the ball from his glove to his right hand and threw it in.
Sears (8-10) pointed and smiled at Tatis. Devers smiled, too.
Tatis doubled to open the Padres' first and scored on O'Hearn's single.
Sheets hit a leadoff homer in the second and, after Roupp was knocked out, greeted reliever Joey Lucchesi with a three-run homer. He has a career-high 17.
San Francisco's Casey Schmitt, who grew up in San Diego, homered off Sears in the fourth. It was his eighth.

Six-run inning propels Padres to series win
The San Diego Padres benefitted from two errors on one play in the bottom of the fifth inning. The play resulted in two runners crossing the plate to give the Padres a 4-2 lead over the San Fransisco Giants. By the end of the fifth, San Diego had scored six runs and enjoyed an 8-2 lead, which allowed the Padres to earn an 8-4 win at Petco Park, Thursday. San Diego opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and a walk by Ramon Laureano and Jake Cronenworth. Freddy Fermin bunted toward third base and San Francisco third baseman Casey Schmitt fielded the ball and threw wide of first base. The ball went up the right field line and right fielder Luis Matos could not field the ball cleanly. Laureano and Cronenworth scored to put the Padres ahead, 4-2. Fernando Tatis Jr. dropped down a bunt of his own and reached first, pushing Fermin to second base. Luis Arraez recorded the third consecutive bunt and was thrown out, but pushed Fermin to third and Tatis Jr. to second. With two runners in scoring position, Manny Machado hit a one-out double to left-center field that scored Fermin and Tatis Jr. to make the score, 6-2. Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander was removed from the game and was replaced by Matt Gage. Ryan O'Hearn was the first batter to face Gage and was hit on the hand by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Machado stole third and scored when Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI-single to left to put the Padres ahead, 7-2. O'Hearn was able to advance to third on the play. San Diego added the final run of the inning when Laureano, hitting for the second time in the frame, recorded a two-out RBI-single through the right side of the infield to put the Padres on top, 8-2. Dylan Cease started the game for San Diego and suffered from defensive miscues in the top of the third inning that saw San Francisco jump out to a 2-0 lead. Cease looked to work deeper into the game after the Padres went up 8-2 in the fifth, but he allowed back-to-back home runs to Rafael Devers and Willy Adames to start the top of the sixth. The rough start to the sixth knocked him out of the game. Cease finished five-plus innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The San Diego bullpen worked the remaining innings of the game without allowing a run and helped the Padres get a 3-1 series win. San Diego hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers, Friday at 6:40 p.m. The Padres enter the weekend series one game back of the NL West Division lead.

The expectation was for Dart to play at least through the first quarter. It comes as no surprise that Daboll opted to rest Russell Wilson and most or all of the starters on both sides of the ball. He tossed two touchdown passes and ran for one touchdown. His moxie, calmness and ability to rally his teammates were all traits the Giants believed Dart possessed when they decided to trade up to the No. 25 pick in the first round of the NFL draft to get him. Seeing him do it in training camp, and then in the preseason, has been encouraging for all involved with his NFL development. Wilson started the first two preseason games. He completed 10 of 14 passes for 136 yards.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado drove in three runs against Justin Verlander and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 8-4 on Thursday in a sloppy game. The Padres took three of four from the Giants and have won three straight going into a second straight weekend showdown against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles swept the Padres last weekend at Dodger Stadium and comes in with a one-game lead in the NL West. San Francisco's Rafael Devers hit a 435-foot home run off Dylan Cease (6-11) leading off the sixth and Willy Adames followed with a 400-footer, also to right-center. The Giants took a 2-0 lead after the Padres misplayed three straight balls to open the third, the first two by right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis called for Luis Matos' flyball as he and center fielder Ramón Laureano converged, but he pulled up and it fell in for a triple. Tatis, who made a spectacular leaping catch to rob Devers of a homer on Wednesday night, then misjudged Andrew Knizner's fly ball that fell in for an RBI double. Jung Hoo Lee reached on second baseman Jake Cronenworth's fielding error and Knizner scored on a double play. San Diego tied it in the fourth on Machado's RBI single and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly. The Padres scored six in the fifth, the first two coming when the Giants committed two errors on Freddy Fermin's bunt single. Machado's two-run double chased Verlander (1-10) and Bogaerts and Laureano each had an RBI base hit. Key moment Machado's two-run double gave the Padres a comfortable lead.
