Ishiba lauds tariff deal with U.S. as result of 'strong efforts'
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba touted the Japan-U.S. tariff agreement, emphasizing the achievement reached after long negotiations, and pledging to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump if needed.
Regarding the 15 percent tariffs on automobiles and reciprocal tariffs, Ishiba told reporters on July 23, 'This is the lowest figure to date among countries with trade surpluses with the United States.'
He also noted that the Japanese side did not lower tariffs on agricultural and other products imported from the United States.
'This is the result of our consistent advocacy and strong efforts to reach out to the United States,' he said.
As for whether he would meet with Trump in the future, the prime minister said, 'If necessary, we will have talks by phone or in person.'
Regarding whether he will remain in office following the LDP-led coalition's loss of the majority in the Upper House on July 20, Ishiba said, 'I can't make a statement without carefully examining the details of the (tariff) agreement.'

BEIJING - Young Japanese sake brewers promoted their products Thursday at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing ahead of a three-day event in the capital from the following day to pitch the drink in China, Japan's largest overseas market by value. At the "Sake Jump" event in Beijing, the second of its kind to be held outside of Japan following one held in Hong Kong in June, 23 brewers from 14 prefectures will showcase their sake. Shintaro Tsuruno, 36, representative of a brewery in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, said he decided to join the event as part of efforts to revive his brewery, which was devastated by a major earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in central Japan on New Year's Day in 2024. As his company jointly brewed sake with other makers following the quake, Tsuruno said he felt the need to turn to overseas markets. "I want to learn what kind of flavor Chinese consumers like and reflect their opinions back in Japan," he said. Li Peng, one of the Chinese organizers of the event, said he hopes more Chinese people will learn about sake so that it will be provided not only at Japanese restaurants but also in daily meals and parties, especially among urban youth. Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi pointed out that the number of Chinese tourists to Japan has been steadily increasing and the market for sake in China is expected to expand with those who tasted it in the neighboring country seeking it again after returning home. "I strongly hope people in the sake industry in Japan and China cooperate with each other and create new chances," the envoy said. In 2024, Japanese sake exports totaled some 43.5 billion yen ($300 million), with about 11.7 billion yen shipped to mainland China, according to official data.

Japanese Yomiuri newspaper sues US AI startup over copyright infringement
The holding company of a Japanese daily newspaper has filed a lawsuit against a US startup for damages caused by unauthorized use of the daily's articles. The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings announced on Thursday that Perplexity, which provides search services using generative AI technology, has made copies of its articles and images for use in providing answers to its users. Yomiuri said the US startup had accessed about 120,000 of its articles from February to June this year, infringing on its copyright. Yomiuri filed the complaint with the Tokyo District Court on Thursday, seeking suspension of use of its articles and compensation of more than 2.1 billion yen, or about 14.2 million dollars. The lawyer for Yomiuri says the lawsuit is the first filed by a major Japanese media company over copyright infringement involving generative AI. The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings said in a statement that allowing such a 'free ride' would negatively impact accurate reporting backed by research. It added that such conduct could undermine the foundation of democracy.
