Family seeks justice in deadly hit-and-run that took 80-year-old mom, wife in Oakland Park
Barbara Price was crossing Powerline Road north of Oakland Park Boulevard around 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 29 when a light blue Land Rover, built between 2005 and 2009, struck her and kept going.
Broward Sheriff's Office investigators recovered pieces of a turn signal cover, a fog light and paint chips, but the driver remains unidentified.
Her son, Joel Ragland, traveled from Chicago to care for his stepfather, Gary Price, who suffers from dementia and to make a public appeal for information.
"We are all accountable. It's unfortunate they left the scene. We as a family forgive them, but you have to deal with the law now," Ragland said.
Detective Michael Wiley, who is leading the investigation, said evidence suggests the driver may not have seen Price before impact.
The tragedy has left Price's husband without his primary caregiver.
With his mother gone, Ragland is now searching for an assisted living facility that can provide the round-the-clock care his stepfather needs.
"She loved this man, fully expected to take care of him till he died," Ragland said.

He faces 22 charges of fraud by false representation before Warrington Magistrates' Court today, Monday. Now, the extent of the allegations has been laid bare through his charge street – including alleged claims of being in 'financial crisis on holiday in Belize'. It is also alleged that Cole-Jones defrauded people through joint business ventures including an aesthetic clinic, and cars including a Range Rover, Land Rover, Audi, Mercedes, and a campervan. Another charge was that he allegedly portrayed himself as a successful businessman and advised a complainant that she should invest in a canal boat, which he later allegedly sold without her knowledge or consent to make a gain of £75,000 for himself. Prosecutors allege that the defendant defrauded complainants by claiming he needed money for private heart surgery and veneer repairs. Other allegations are that he needed help in paying off outstanding tax bills and debts that carried threats of violence against him. The 52-year-old, of Church Grove in Donnington, Telford, was charged following an investigation by detectives from Cheshire Police's economic crime unit The charges relate to romance fraud allegations involving six complainants from Cheshire, Lancashire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Manchester, and the West Midlands. The offences are reported to have occurred between 2009 and 2024, with the total value of the alleged offences being more than £590,000. Cole-Jones, also known as Marc Cole and Marc Sands, will make a first appearance in relation to the allegations before Warrington Magistrates' Court today.

Parents of Frankfort teen killed in August 2024 Mokena crash take fresh legal action
The parents of an 18-year-old Frankfort woman killed in a crash a year ago as she was preparing to start college have filed new lawsuits in the case. Courtney Miller, a graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School, died early Aug. 15, 2024, following a crash in Mokena at U.S. 30 and Owens Road. Her parents, in an amended lawsuit filed Thursday in Will County Circuit Court, allege Mokena police dropped the ball in not testing one of the drivers involved for alcohol consumption. It also claims Mokena officers obstructed the investigation by shutting off body cameras during portions of their probe at the accident scene. The village attorney said Friday the village had not yet seen a copy of the lawsuit and that he could not comment on the allegations. Miller planned to attend Joliet Junior College and study toward a degree in radiology, according to her obituary. At the time of her death she worked for Elite Ambulance. Police said Miller was a passenger in a 2010 Camaro being driven by a friend and headed east on U.S. 30 in Mokena at Owens Roads when it collided with a 2015 Land Rover being driven west and turning south onto Owens. Police said both vehicles had a green light. The driver of the Land Rover was cited by Mokena police for failure to yield while turning. The crash took place at about 10:15 p.m. and Miller was pronounced dead at the scene at about 12:30 a.m. Aug. 16. The amended wrongful death lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges the driver of the Land Rover, Scott Hersted, had been drinking at locations in Chicago prior to the crash, adding those establishments as defendants in the case, originally filed last year, seeking damages in excess of $50,000. Attorneys for Hersted could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. Separately, the parents also filed a lawsuit Thursday in Will County alleging Mokena police haven't helped the investigation and may have hindered it. That complaint names the village and 10 police personnel as defendants, and alleges police did not require Hersted to take a field sobriety test or seek a warrant to draw his blood to test for alcohol. It also alleges that some officers, while talking at the accident scene, purposely turned off body-worn cameras at certain points. The complaint seeks damages in excess of $50,000. A judge overseeing the wrongful death suit this week issued a protective order preventing public release of information in the case. It came after a request from attorneys representing Hersted. Information and documents deemed confidential and barred from public consumption, including news media, includes investigative documents, videos and photos and witness statements, according to the order.

An embattled Los Angeles city councilmember was slapped with new corruption charges after he and his wife allegedly embezzled $800,000 meant for housing and public transit. Councilman Curren Price was formally charged Tuesday with two counts of corruption for allegedly voting to approve the city's housing authority and metro service for fat state and federal grants — in exchange for nearly $1 million in payouts to his wife's consulting firm between 2019 and 2021. In 2023, the same year Price faced his first batch of charges, former Councilmember Jose Huizar pleaded guilty to racketeering and tax evasion, and veteran city politician Mark Ridley-Thomas was sentenced to federal prison for a bribery scheme in which he sought favors for his son from a university dean in exchange for political favors. Last year, Mayor Bass appointed fellow progressive Janisse Quinones as head of the water and power department, paying her a roughly $750,000 salary — almost double what her predecessor made. And in February, Bass fired Fire Chief Kristin Crowley for her bungled response to the Palisades Fire – less than three years after Crowley's predecessor resigned amid allegations of racism and sexism in the upper echelons of the fire department.
