Chopper used by CM Mohan Charan Majhi stranded on Kendrapara college playground for a month
During the chief minister's maiden visit to the district on June 9, his helicopter was struck by lightning amid incessant rains. Though Majhi landed safely at the temporary helipad on the college ground, he was forced to return from Kendrapara by road. Since then, the helicopter has been stranded on the college playground, causing major inconvenience to students and locals.
Requesting anonymity, a college teacher said for more than a month, the playground is not accessible to anyone. The ground has been barricaded while a police camp and fire service personnel with their vehicle are guarding the helicopter round the clock. All sports and cultural activities of the college have also been stopped since June 9 as the playground is out of bounds for people.
Nagendra Das, a local, said, 'We used to walk on the playground every morning. We have abandoned our daily morning walk for the last one month as the ground is no more accessible to us.'
Former principal of Kendrapara Autonomous College Nanda Kishor Parida said this is the only ground where the district administration organises major events such as the Pallishree Mela, Independence Day and Republic Day. 'The long occupancy of the chopper on the college ground is troubling everyone. We hope the officials will shift the helicopter to some other place soon,' he said.
Contacted, additional district magistrate (ADM) of Kendrapara Rabindra Kumar Behera said the helicopter developed some technical snags due to lightning. Three aviation engineers spent a week to repair it but could not succeed. 'We are guarding the helicopter. The district administration has already informed the state government regarding the stranding of the chopper on the college playground. We hope the helicopter will leave Kendrapara soon after it is repaired,' the ADM added.

Overnight rain lashed Delhi-NCR from Friday night into Saturday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert early Saturday. The first red alert was sounded at 6.20 am, followed by another at 7 am. 'Light to moderate rainfall occurring over most parts of Delhi is likely to continue during the next two hours, with the possibility of intense spells over eastern and central Delhi,' IMD officials said. 'Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied with moderate thunderstorm and lightning (30-40 km/h gusty winds) is very likely to occur at entire Delhi and NCR, Meham, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Kosali, Mahendargarh, Sohana, Rewari, Palwal, Narnaul, Bawal, Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal (Haryana), Bhiwari, Tizara (Rajasthan),' read the alert valid up to 10 am. The rain began late Friday night, with the IMD upgrading alerts through the early hours — from a yellow alert in most of Delhi-NCR till 2.30 am, to an orange alert in East Delhi around 5.30 am, before escalating to red. By 8.30 am Saturday, Safdarjung, which is representative of the city, recorded 78.7 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, while Pragati Maidan recorded 100.3 mm. Lodhi Road and Pusa recorded 80.7 mm and 69 mm rainfall, respectively. In an advisory, the IMD warned of potential waterlogging, traffic congestion, and reduced visibility, which could extend travel time by up to 30 minutes. It also cautioned residents against standing near weak structures. Significant rainfall was also reported in parts of Punjab and Uttarkashi, which had seen a flash flood a few days ago. For the week ahead, the IMD issued no further alerts but forecast very light to light rain with thunderstorms over the next six days. On August 13, one or two spells of light to moderate rain are expected, followed by a high chance of showers or thunderstorms on the morning of August 14. Independence Day is likely to see partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain or thunderstorms, bringing temperatures down to 22 to 33 degrees Celsius, several degrees below the season's normal of 26 to 34 degrees Celsius. As per the IMD's long-period average, the month's normal rainfall is 233.1 mm and it has already received 118 mm. On Saturday morning from 5.30 to 8.30 am, Safdarjung alone logged 49.6 mm rainfall. Delhi experienced above-normal rainfall this July, receiving 259.3 mm compared to the normal 209.7 mm.

Heavy rains to continue till August 15
Hyderabad: Rains may dampen Independence Day celebrations this year, going by the forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) - Hyderabad Center. The IMD forecast says light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are very likely to occur in many places over Telangana over the next seven days till August 15. The IMD has also issued warnings of heavy rainfall in isolated places in several districts during this period. The officials attributed this to the low pressure developed in the Bay of Bengal leading to heavy rains in several parts of the city. Heavy rains had lashed the city on Thursday. There was 12 CM rain in the areas like Punjagutta and other places, causing heavy traffic jams with roads getting battered. The IMD has forecast further rains in the coming seven days. The civic authorities opened one crest gate of Himayatsagar on Thursday night, letting waters into the Musi River. The IMD has forecast that heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the districts of Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, JogulambaGadwal. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30 to 40 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of Telangana on Saturday, Sunday. There will be light to moderate rainfall at isolated places in Telangana from Monday to Friday (August 11 to 15). From Monday to Wednesday, there will be some respite and again on August 14 and 15, there could be heavy rainfall at isolated places in Telangana, the IMD has predicted.

Tour operators advise against Himachal, Uttarakhand travel amid rains
Amid flash floods in parts of Himachal Pradesh and a cloudburst in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, tour operators are advising people to avoid travelling to the northern mountain states. 'Monsoon time is not the best time to visit states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. We generally advise people to avoid travelling to these states during the monsoon season,' said Ravi Gosain, president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). The caution comes during a strong season for short-haul travel ahead of the Independence Day long weekend. Several leisure destinations in the northern hills, including Shimla and Chail, had been expecting high occupancy for the August 15–17 weekend. 'We sympathise with those who have suffered losses and hope the government will step up relief and rescue measures,' Gosain said. 'My cousins and I had planned to visit Kasauli for the upcoming Rakhi weekend, but seeing the weather conditions, we have cancelled the trip and are now exploring other places in Rajasthan,' said Shubham Sharma, a 29-year-old engineer based in Delhi. 'Last year in Himachal there were flash floods leading to loss of lives and damage to property. This year we have a cloudburst in Uttarakhand. These states are vulnerable to natural calamities during the rainy season, and people should wait for better weather to visit,' he added. After flash floods ravaged Dharali in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday visited the village to review relief and rescue operations. He met affected families and assured them of all possible assistance. Over 150 people have been rescued, while several remain missing, including a tourist group from Kerala.
