Tampa Bay Rays Make Massive Move In MLB Power Rankings
Tampa Bay Rays Make Massive Move In MLB Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Winning at home has been an issue for the Tampa Bay Rays, yet they've found a level of success on the road. It makes some sense as the Rays are playing at George M. Steinbrenner Field, a minor-league park, this season due to Tropicana Field's damage.

Well, Tampa Bay has been showing signs of life lately. Their improved play has been noticed by The Athletic, which has the Rays sitting at the No. 14 position in the latest MLB Power Rankings.
Who has been a major cog in the Rays' improved play? First baseman Jonathan Aranda should get a bunch of credit.
He's even getting attention for a possible spot in this summer's All-Star Game.
Jonathan Aranda keeps showing up day after day for the Rays in a good way
Aranda currently ranks eighth in MLB in wRC+. Using that as a demarcation point, Aranda is the fourth-best hitter in the American League right now. He's hitting at a .326 clip with seven home runs and 32 RBI. Aranda has a .508 slugging percentage and an OPS of .923.

After playing a few different positions in his career, Aranda seems to be making first base his home these days. Giving him a steady role in the everyday lineup can keep him focused on his fielding and hitting work on a regular basis.
Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen has anchored the Tampa Bay pitching staff. He's got a 5-4 record with a 2.14 ERA in 12 starts. Overall, the Rays' starting pitchers have put together a tidy team ERA, good enough to land in the top 10 in MLB.
Now, the focus is on whether the Rays can remain competitive in the American League East all season long, Time will tell. If Aranda and Rasmussen can continue with solid contributions, don't be surprised if the Rays end up landing a wild card spot.

James Cook, Bills Contract Standoff Receives Harsh Update
James Cook, Bills Contract Standoff Receives Harsh Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills entered the new NFL year with a big question to answer. James Cook is coming off his best season after posting 207 carries, racking up 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns in 16 games. Advertisement He went from being a strong force to a scoring machine, helping the Bills play in the AFC championship game, where the Kansas City Chiefs stopped them again. Amid an offseason in which the team gave Josh Allen a new $330 million contract and extended several members of the 2022 class, including linebacker Terrel Bernard, wide receiver Khalil Shakir and cornerback Christian Benford, Cook expressed his desire to win $15 million per campaign, as he entered his final year on his current deal. Buffalo's management stated they aren't entertaining that possibility at the moment, putting Cook in a difficult position. Buffalo Bills running back James CookMark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Amid his contract standoff, Cook opted to skip the voluntary OTAs at the end of May, sounding the alarms for the defending AFC East champions. Their mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 10-12, which could be the breaking point of this relationship. Advertisement During Wednesday's edition of his "The Adam Schefter Podcast," the NFL insider shared a grim update on where things stand between Cook and his team. Schefter says that Cook will likely remain absent from his team's practice for the foreseeable future. 'You've got a guy who's unhappy with his contractual situation," Schefter said. "(He) has basically disconnected himself from the organization and the city, put his house up for sale...I don't think we'll be seeing him in Buffalo anytime soon. Again, the start of training camp will be the next critical moment. If they don't have a deal done there or by then, does James Cook show up for training camp? Does he risk the penalties that come along in the collective bargaining agreement if he doesn't show up? Schefter then added how other teams with star running backs handled their situations differently. "We've seen the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason reward Saquon Barkley, we've seen the Baltimore Ravens reward Derrick Henry. We have not seen the Buffalo Bills pay James Cook yet. James Cook is a valuable member of that offense." Advertisement The running back market experienced big changes thanks to Barkley, Henry and Cook's performances in 2024. They posted remarkable seasons that helped their teams compete in the playoffs, but only two of them have been given new deals. Is Coaching 'Familiarity' Key To Unlocking Cowboys' Deuce Vaughn?
Is Coaching 'Familiarity' Key To Unlocking Cowboys' Deuce Vaughn? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn is entering perhaps his most significant NFL offseason of his career. Advertisement Having only played 17 games and totaled 134 rushing yards in two seasons, it's gut-check time for Deuce to prove he's worthy of staying on the roster. But maybe the football gods have smiled down on the running back when his former Kansas State coach, Conor Riley, was named offensive line coach this offseason. Is Riley's familiarity with Deuce and his game, which saw Vaughn rush for 3,604 yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons in college, the key to him finally making a statement this offseason? 'For myself,'' Vaughn said, "I've been taking it day by day, but also understanding that his run scheme, the things that him and Coach [Klayton] Adams want to do as far as running the football this upcoming year, not necessarily new, nuances are just a little bit different. Advertisement "The terminology, being able to hear from somebody that you've heard it for now for three, four years, is really big. Just having that relationship that I can go and ask him questions about anything, just up front, and you know how big that is for a running back and a running game. "So it's really big that familiarity.' by Mike Fisher With Vaughn far down the pecking order in the running back room as Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, and even rookie Jaydon Blue ahead of him in the depth chart, it could be tough sledding for Deuce. But maybe Riley's influence and familiarity with Vaughn can be the thread the Cowboys can pull to finally let Deuce loose in 2025. Advertisement Granted, he needs to get the carries to do it, and with two veterans in front of him, plus Blue, who is a speed merchant, that might be a tall order. However, with Riley, maybe Deuce now has a fighting chance of showing he is deserving of a place on Brian Schottenheimer's offense. Stephen Jones Reveals Thoughts On Cowboys' Legends Day
Stephen Jones Reveals Thoughts On Cowboys' Legends Day originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer wants to change the culture at The Star, and to do that, he has to do things differently. Advertisement While he's only been at his new post for a few months, Schottenheimer is already making big changes to how the Cowboys do things both on and off the field. One such thing that the first-time head coach has done was to incorporate a Cowboys "Legends Day" as OTAs got underway at The Star. Several former players, including Tony Casillas and Michael Irvin, were glowing in what they saw in the meeting rooms and on the practice field from both Schotty and his playing group. And COO Stephen Jones thinks it should be a regular thing the franchise does. 'I thought it was outstanding,' Jones said. 'Our guys really embraced it, it's great to see them, and a lot of those guys have had a lot of success wearing the Cowboy Star. I think they really enjoyed what Coach Schottenheimer is doing with these players, and really thought it was a great event, and we're going to do it again. Advertisement "I think everybody loved it and the guys who missed it, like Troy [Aikman] he called up and said if I weren't in Europe I'd have been there and hopefully next time we'll have even more. We love having those guys back.' Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images It might seem like a trivial thing to do, but Schottenheimer getting the players of today mixing with the players of yesterday to help build that connection, because as the head coach stated, they are a part of the Cowboys family. Times are well and truly changing at The Star, and it appears to be for the better right now. Granted, that doesn't mean it will translate into wins, but the vibe and energy at practice and in the meeting rooms are noticeably different from previous years. Advertisement Schotty wants to build the best culture in professional sports, and while that's quite the lofty goal, he's off to a good start with "Legends Day," showing that not only is he talking the talk with his desire to establish a new culture, but he's walking the walk, too. And Stephen Jones approves. Related: Is Coaching 'Familiarity' Key To Unlocking Cowboys' Deuce Vaughn?
